Matthew 7:6, Cast not Your Pearls Before Swine??
Matthew 7:6 Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you. [KJV]
Pigs were unclean animals according to God’s law (Lev.11:7; Deut. 14:8). Anyone who touched an unclean animal became “ceremonially unclean” and could not go to the temple to worship until they were made clean.
Jesus tells us that we should NOT entrust holy teachings to unholy or unclean people. It is fruitless to try to teach holy concepts to people who do not want to listen and will only try to rip to pieces what we say. We should NEVER stop trying to giving God’s Word to unbelievers, but we should be wise and discerning in what we teach, and to whom. Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, this meaning angry or grumbling haters of the Truth. Neither cast ye your pearls before swine, meaning the impure or offensive, who are incapable of appreciating the priceless treasure of the Gospel.
In the East, dogs run wild and feed on dead animals and garbage. They are meaner and more savage than the same animals in the West. Dogs and swine, besides being ceremonially unclean, were especially repulsive to the Jews, and to the ancients in general. Lest they trample them under their feet, as swine do. And turn again and rend you, as dogs do (Isa.56:11; Phil.3:2; Rev.22:15). The Gospel can easily be brought into contempt by those who refuse to hear the Truth, and those bringing it can be insulted and ridiculed, when it is forced upon those who simply cannot see the value of it and want no part of it.
We must be careful, but we also must be on guard so we do not judge our neighbors as dogs or swine . . . thus excusing ourselves from trying to do good to them. We must determine just who the dogs are and who the pigs are. These are absolutely NOT four legged animals Jesus is talking about. We are not to give that which is holy to dogs or cast our pearls before swine . . . so there is a judgment that we must make.
There are certain times and places where it is wise not to say a single word. This is a judgment you need to make. There are many swine and there are many dogs in our society today. What should we do? Jesus tells us that we are not to judge, then He tells us we are to judge. The answer is in the next verses, PRAYER! Ask God to help you.
Matthew 7:7-8 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: [8] For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. [KJV]
Every day we come in contact with princes and paupers, gentlemen and scoundrels, true and false professors. Some people NEED our friendship and help, and we need them, while others are the devil's children (1 John 3:10) and will destroy us. We need to take the good ones into our hearts while the scoundrels need to be pushed far away. How do we know the difference? To ask, seek, and knock answers this problem. Matthew 7:7-8 can be used for many other situations, but it is this situation that it has main reference to.
