Col. 3:12-17, How Believers Are To Live
Col. 3:12-17 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; [13] Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. [14] And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. [15] And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. [16] Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. [17] And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. (KJV)
The apostle Paul offers a way to help us live for God day by day:
- (1) Imitate Christ Jesus’ compassion and forgiving attitude (Col. 3:12-13).
- (2) Let love guide your life (Col. 3:14).
- (3) Let the peace of Christ rule in your heart (Col. 3:15).
- (4) Always be thankful (Col. 3:15).
- (5) Keep God’s Word in you at all times (Col. 3:16).
- (6) Live as Jesus Christ’s representative (Col. 3:17).
We must not only do no harm to anyone, BUT do what good we can to all. Those who are the elect of God, holy and beloved, should be humble and have mercy towards all people. In this world, there is so much corruption and wickedness, we must NOT allow any of it to enter our hearts. It is our duty to forgive one another, imitating the forgiveness of Jesus, through whom we are saved. The peace of God CAN rule in our hearts, if we allow the Holy Spirit to do His work within us. We must never quench the Spirit (1 Thes.5:19), for He works in all who are God's children (1 John 3:10).
We must always be thankful and grateful to God, for it helps make us agreeable to all people. The Gospel is the Word of Christ. Many have the Word, but it is sad that it dwells in them poorly; having no power over them. The soul prospers, only when we are full of the Truth of God's Word and of the grace of Christ. Let us daily continue to grow in Christ until our last day here on Earth. Let us be led by the Spirit of God (Gal.5:18-23).
When we sing hymns, we must be affected with what we sing. I have seen people mouth the words to such touching hymns such as “Amazing Grace” and never realize what they are saying. Whatever we do, let us do every thing in the Name of the Lord Jesus, and do
in believing and trusting dependence on Him. If we do all in Christ’s precious and Holy Name, our lives will be acceptable to God, the Father.

1 Thes. 5:19 Quench not the Spirit. (KJV)
1 John 3:10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. (KJV)
Galatians 5:18-23 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
[19] Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, [20] Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, [21] Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. [22] But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, [23] Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. (KJV)
