Genesis 3:15, Seed of the Woman
Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. (KJV)
God promised to put enmity (hatred) between Satan and the woman, and between Satan’s seed and her seed (Christ). Christ would bruise Satan’s head, and Satan shall bruise Jesus’ heel. What a tremendous statement!
The main thought here, is not only the ultimate victory that would come, but the seemingly never ending battle . . . revealing the fact of our long struggle between good and evil. This is carried on through the rest of the Scriptures. Our Lord Jesus made this statement:
John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. (KJV)
“The devil” is Satan. The Lord Jesus Christ made the distinction between children of God and children of Satan. John also mentions this conflict. 1 John 3:10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. (KJV)
There will be that final victory, but every person must face temptation and must win his battle. Before Christ came, the victory was through obedience in faith, which was looking forward to Christ. After Christ came, we must identify ourselves WITH Christ through faith. What does it mean to be saved? It means you must believe God (1 John 5:10-13), and it means you must trust AND obey Christ, walking with Him in this life. It means to be "in Christ."
Man was one of three orders of creation: angels, man, and animals. Animals have no choice, but man and angels were given a free will and can choose which road they will walk (Mat.7:13-14). When we make a decision, we are held responsible for that decision.
“Her seed.” It does not say the man’s seed. This is the first prophecy concerning the virgin birth of Christ.
When God went into that garden looking for Adam, He said, “Where art thou?” Any religion tells of man’s search for God. BUT . . . how does God tells it? Salvation is God searching for man. Man ran away from Him, and God called to him, “Where art thou?” Wise words: “Divine justice cannot overlook sin, but Divine sorrow grieves over the sinner. Divine love is the only answer which offers redemption for sin.” This verse has the Promise of the coming of the Saviour which we ALL so desperately need.
God’s search for man is revealed in other Scriptures.
Romans 3:11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. (KJV)
John 15:19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. (KJV)
1 John 4:19 We love him, because he first loved us. (KJV)
God seeks us out and offers us salvation, BUT there will be a l-o-n-g struggle that will take place . . . the devil does NOT give up easily!
God mainly attacks Satan (the serpent), and hurls against him His judgment. This He does for two reasons:
- 1. God wants us to know that Satan is a most deadly enemy, and
- 2. That we might battle with Satan with confidence of victory.
Under the cover of a serpent, a perpetual curse is attached to him. He is sentenced:
- 1. To be degraded and cursed by God.
- 2. To be detested and hated by mankind. Even those who are seduced by him, say they hate him.
- 3. To be destroyed and ruined by the Redeemer; “bruising of his head”. His skillful deceptions shall be confounded and his assumed power utterly crushed one day. There is a perpetual battle between Satan and the Kingdom of God.
There is a continual conflict between God’s people and Satan. Heaven and Hell can NEVER be reconciled, no more than can a sanctified soul and Satan.
There is a constant battle between the righteous and the wicked. All the malice of persecutors against God’s people is the fruit of the enmity mentioned in Gen.3:15. It shall continue as long as there is a godly man here on this side of Heaven and a wicked man on this side of Hell. A gracious Promise is made here of Christ as the Deliverer of sinful man from the power of Satan.
See three things concerning Christ:
- 1. His incarnation . . . that He should be the Seed of the woman.
- 2. His sufferings and His death . . . shown in Satan bruising His Heel (His human nature).
- 3. His victory over Satan. Satan had insulted and trampled on the woman, but the Seed of the woman would be raised in the fullness of time to avenge her, and to trample on him, to spoil him, to lead him captive and to triumph over him.
1 Cor. 15:28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself
be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all. (KJV)
Gal. 3:19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. (KJV)
Gal. 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, (KJV)
Col. 2:15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. (KJV)
Hebrews 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; (KJV)
The Seed of the woman is the Messiah.
Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. (KJV)
Gal. 3:16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. (KJV) Abraham was a descendant of Eve.
Thy seed (the devil’s seed) means not only evil spirits (demons) but wicked men who follow Satan (1 John 3:8-10).
Her Seed is the Messiah and His church (the Body of Christ), His people.
It shall bruise thy head . . . the serpent’s poison is in its head. A bruise on its head is fatal.
Thou shalt bruise his heel . . . the serpent wounds the Heel that crushes him, thus allowing him to afflict humanity and bring turmoil, suffering and persecution to God’s people. Satan bruised Christ’s humanity, and he continues to bruise the saints into this present day. But . . . while Jesus’ Heel is here on Earth, His Head is in Heaven! Christ baffles Satan’s temptations and rescues souls out of his hands. By His death, Christ gave a bruise to Satan’s head that cannot be healed. Those who believe God (1 John 5:10-12) and accept Christ as their Saviour (John 1:12-13; 3:3, 15-18, 36; 5:24), Satan cannot harm. Our Lord Jesus gives us victory. We have overcome (1 John 5:1-5; Rev.2:7,11,17,26; 3:5,21; 21:7). AMEN! Thank You Jesus!
Passages mentioned above.
1 John 5:10-13 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. [11] And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. [12] He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. [13] These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. (KJV)
Matthew 7:13-14 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: [14] Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. (KJV)
1 John 3:8-10 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. [9] Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. [10] In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. (KJV)
John 1:12-13 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: [13] Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. (KJV)
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. (KJV)
John 3:15-18 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. [16] For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. [17] For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. [18] He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. (KJV)
John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. (KJV)
John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. (KJV)
1 John 5:1-5 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. [2] By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. [3] For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. [4]For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. [5] Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? (KJV)

Revelation 2:17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it. (KJV)
Revelation 2:26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: (KJV)

Revelation 3:21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. (KJV)
Revelation 21:7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. (KJV)
