1 John 5:18-20, Those Born of God, Sinneth Not ???
1 John 5:18-20 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not. [19] And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness. [20] And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. [KJV]
Christians DO commit sins and will continue to do so (Rom.3:10,23). The proper thing for us to do when we sin, is confess that sin (1 John 1:9) and ask God to forgive us; then continue serving Him in willing obedience. We have been freed from slavery to Satan . . . and we are kept safe from Satan’s continued attacks. Unbelievers do NOT have the Christian’s freedom or willingness to obey God. Unless they come in faith to Christ, they have NO choice but to obey Satan. There is NO straddling the fence; people either belong to God and obey Him, or they live under Satan’s control (1 John 3:10).
ALL people . . . NO matter who or where . . . are divided into two groups; those who belong to God, and those who belong to the wicked one. TRUE believers belong to God: they are of God, from Him, to Him, and for Him. But the rest (unbelievers) are in the second group, and are by far, much greater in number (Mat.7:13-14), and are absolutely under the complete control of the wicked one. They do his work and support his cause.
We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not. Just what does this mean?
“Whosoever,” is every one who is born again, “sinneth not ” means we do NOT live in sin, we do NOT continue in sin, we do NOT practice sin. For instance: we know adultery is wrong, so we do NOT live together as man and wife without the benefit of marriage. We know that stealing is wrong, so we do NOT steal from anyone. We know that lying is wrong, so we do NOT tell lies or gossip.
When we become God’s children, we have two natures: our old nature and a new nature. That new nature does NOT want to sin, and will not sin. It never wants to sin but has a deep desire for God and for the things of God. BUT, that old nature WILL sin, and still wants to sin and has no regrets when it sins. It is because of this that a believer does sin.
“But he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not” (verse 18). This is a verse which makes me believe that the TRUE child of God can NEVER be demon possessed. I believe that Christians can be OPPRESSED (burdened, troubled, depressed) by demons, but I do not think a TRUE believer can be POSSESSED (taken over, controlled bodily) by demons. Anyone that is actually demon possessed, I would question their salvation, even though they think that they are born again. Why? Because “greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4). The Holy Spirit would NOT be living where a demon was living (Rom.8:9) . . . NO way!
In regards to our new regenerated life, the prince of this world (John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11) has NO power over us, nowhere to fasten his deadly temptations. The divine regeneration has severed once for all, all connection with the prince of this world. 1 John 3:6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. [KJV] “Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not” this is saying that our new nature will NOT sin. Christ, this absolutely sinless One, who became sin for us (2 Cor.5:21) that we might be reconciled to God, dwells in all believers by His Holy Spirit. That actually makes OUR new nature (Eph.2:15; 4:24; Col.3:10), His very own life imparted (conveyed) to us. IF you are God’s child, that new nature will NOT go along with the old nature (Rom.6:6; Eph.4:22; Col.3:9) and commit sin. TRUE believers who abide in Christ do NOT practice sin, do NOT live in sin. The sinner (unbelievers) lives in sin all the time and could care less, but the TRUE child of God has a new nature, and he CANNOT live a sinful life. Only pigs live in pigpens; sons do not. Somebody will say, “But the son got into the pigpen.” Yes! He did, but he got OUT of that pigpen too, let’s remember that (Luke 15:11-32, prodigal son). The child of God can (and will at times) get into the pigpen (backsliding), but he will get out, he will NOT stay there. WHY? Because he is a son of the Heavenly Father, and he takes after his Father. His Father is righteous, and the son wants to be righteous too.
The children of God know that their Lord is pure and that He will not allow any thing unholy and impure to dwell with Him. Only hypocrites hope and make allowance for impure desires and lusts. TRUE followers of Him, as His dear children, exhibit obedient, grateful and humble minds.
Sin is simply rejecting God and His Divine law. In Christ, there was no sin. Anyone who abides in Christ, will NOT continue in the practice of sin. When we renounce sin, this is proof of our spiritual union with the Lord Jesus Christ. It is proof of our continuance in that union, and proof of the saving knowledge of our Saviour and Lord.
Beware of self-deceit. The devil is strong, and he will try to tell you sin is OK. He is wrong! NO sin is OK! He that doeth righteousness is righteous, and being a follower of Christ, proves his faith in His obedience and sufferings. We CANNOT act like the devil, and at the same time be a disciple of Christ Jesus. Let us not serve or indulge what the Son of God came to destroy. To be born of God is to be inwardly renewed by the power of the Spirit of God. The regenerated person CANNOT sin as he did before he was born of God, and as others do who are not born again. The light of Christ shows us the evil and fatality of sin. TRUE believers loathe and hate sin and firmly and boldly oppose sinful acts. There is always repentance for any sin, when committed. Those born of God CANNOT sin with forethought. The children of God and the children of the devil have their distinct and different characters. Unbelievers hate true Christians. Only TRUE believers are righteous before God, and are justified (Rom.3:24; 5:1-10). The TRUE children of God are clearly evident, as are the children of the devil (1 John 3:10). May all who profess Christ and His Gospel keep these Truths in their heart, and judge themselves by them (1 Cor.11:31).

Romans 5:1-10 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: [2] By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. [3] And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; [4] And patience, experience; and experience, hope: [5] And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. [6] For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. [7] For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. [8] But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. [9] Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. [10] For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. (KJV)
