Matthew 22:36-40, Believers' TWO Commands
Matthew 22:36-40 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? [37] Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. [38] This is the first and great commandment. [39] And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. [40] On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. (KJV)
Both Mark and Luke add: "all thy strength."
Mark 12:30-31 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. [31] And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. (KJV)
Luke 10:27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. (KJV)
*** Matthew 22:37 Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Thou shalt love the Lord . . . This is of utmost importance, and should be well understood. Our Lord Jesus tells that the basis of true religion is comprised in loving God and our neighbor.
Genuine Godly love does NOT change, but always resides in the heart of the one who loves. Godly love is NOT sexual so-called love, as most of the world today thinks. Godly love is agape love. It is care, concern and compassion.
Loving God = the total person willingly surrendering to the Most High and Almighty Creator God. It is through this love for God that we acquire a new identity. We are born again into the family of God when God's Holy Spirit regenerates us. It is through this love we achieve the sameness of spirit with the Lord . . . we are made a partaker of God's Divine nature, having the mind in us which was in Christ . . . we dwell in God, and God in us.
What does it mean to love God with ALL the heart, soul, mind, strength? And when must we do this?
#1 IF we love God with all our heart . . . there is NOTHING or NO one anywhere that will compare with Him. We must be ready to give up, or do, or suffer any thing in order to please and glorify Him! We must NOT harbor in our heart neither hatred, nor fear, nor doubt, nor desire for worldly things . . . but only things and thoughts that relate to God, and are regulated by Him.
#2 IF we love God with all our soul, or rather with all our life, we will be ready to give up life for His sake . . . to endure torments, and to be deprived of comforts IF necessary, rather than to ever dishonor God! We must glorify God in, by, and through all . . . for life and death come from and lead to God. We overcome by the precious Blood of the Lamb, and we love not our lives unto the death. (Rev.12:11).
#3 IF we love God with all our strength, we will exert all the power of our body and soul in the service of God. We will not spare labor or cost for the glory of our Maker. We will sacrifice our time, body, health and pleasure so we can honor and glorify our God and Divine Master.
#4 IF we love God with all our mind (intellect), we will strive to know God and His Holy Will much better with each passing day. We will receive with fear, submission, gratitude and pleasure, the awesome and sacred Truths which God has revealed to us. We must cast away from our memory every useless, foolish and dangerous thought . . . and every thought which may have a tendency to defile our soul, or turn us TO worldly things. We must see God in all things, think of Him at all times, have our mind continually fixed upon God and acknowledge Him in all His ways. We must begin, continue and end all our thoughts, words, and deeds, to the glory of His Holy Name.
The person who loves God with all his heart, life, strength, and mind is dead to the world, and the world to him. We live, yet not us, but Christ lives in us. We must constantly look to Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith (Heb.12:2). We must receive continual supplies of enlightening and sanctifying grace from His Holy Spirit (1 Thes.5:23), so we are fitted for every good word and work. We must have communion between the blessed Trinity and the soul of man!
*** Matthew 22:38 This is the first and great commandment.
Jesus tells us that loving God is our first and great Commandment. Consider:
- This Commandment is as old as the world and engraved on our very soul.
- This Commandment proceeds from and refers only to our Almighty Creator God.
- This Commandment is the First Commandment of the New Covenant, and is the only way to be Divinely adopted into God's family.
- This Commandment, it ant it alone renders to God His due, prefers Him above all things, and secures to Him His proper position in relation to mankind.
- This Commandment in itself is capable of making us holy in this life, and happy in the one to come.
- This Commandment is the root of all commandments, and the fulfilling of the law.
- This Commandment and by this alone, does God reign in our heart, and unites us to Him.
- This Commandment impresses upon the creature, to glorify the Creator.
- This Commandment is absolutely necessary for eternal life in Heaven.
- This Commandment is to be continued on Earth, and never to be discontinued in Heaven.
*** Matthew 22:39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Thou shalt love thy neighbor . . . our second Commandment
The love of our neighbor is born from our love of God. The love of God is its basis and its pattern. Our love for our neighbour is founded in our love of God. Love of our neighbor is a love of caring, concern and compassion. We OWE our neighbor what we have a right to expect from him: "Do unto all people as you would want them to do to you." This is a positive command from our precious Saviour. It is NOT: "Do unto him before he does to you."
To live by this "golden rule," we should think, speak and do, concerning every person. By this rule we are taught to bear with, love, and forgive him; to rejoice in his joy, to mourn in his sorrow, be glad when he prospers, instruct in his ignorance, help him in his weakness, and risk even our life for his sake. In other words, we must do every thing in our power, through all possible circumstances, for our neighbors, which we would wish them to do for us, were our situations reversed. When we consider this, it is impossible in our own power! We must NEVER "quench the Spirit" (1 Thes.5:19), but allow Him free access in His work within us.
This is how Jesus wants us to live! Love God, love our fellow man and we will be in perfect peace, harmony and love. These TWO Commandments are the Commandments of our day. And they boil down to ONE four letter word . . . LOVE!!!
Leviticus 19:18 Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD. (KJV)
Matthew 7:12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. (KJV)
Luke 6:31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. (KJV)
Romans 13:9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. (KJV)
Galatians 5:14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. (KJV)
IF we all would LOVE with Godly love, and follow the golden rule, what a different world this would be!
*** Matthew 22:40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
On these TWO Commandments in Matthew 22:36-40 . . . hang all the law and the prophets. Those TWO commandments of Jesus, cover the entire Old Testament! That is what Jesus says! Being a TRUE child of God begins and ends with LOVE . . . to God and man. The Ten Commandments were given to ISRAEL! Jesus' Commands are given to the church!
Romans 13:10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. (KJV) LOVE is the fulfilling of the law! When we have the love of God within us, we are delighted to obey God.
These TWO Commandments contain the entire substance of all that Moses gave from God in the Ten Commandments . . . and everything the prophets had spoken. What the entire Old Testament has said teaches us to love God and each other. IF we do this, we will NEVER harm anyone in any way! Love to God and man is the whole of religion.
Jesus says that these TWO commandments cover the entire Old Testament! Those who insist they live by the Ten Commandments are wrong.
If you say you go by the Law, it means much more than the Ten Commandments. There are about 613 Laws in the Old Testament. If you insist you will keep the Law, you must keep them ALL or be cursed!
Gal. 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. (KJV)
Deut. 27:26-a Cursed be he that confirmeth not all the words of this law to do them. . . . . . . (KJV)
Do you really see what the above two verses say? NO one except JESUS ever kept ALL the Law! Not even close! NO one! So, if you say you live by the Law, you are cursed! Because you CANNOT keep ALL the Law!
Passages mentioned above.
Revelation 12:11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. (KJV)
Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. (KJV)
1 Thes. 5:19 Quench not the Spirit. (KJV)
