Genesis 6:1-2, SONS OF GOD??
Genesis 6:1-2 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, [2] That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. (KJV)
This Passage has caused much discussion and controversy. Many take the position that “the sons of God” were angels. I have trouble agreeing with that. IF these were good angels, they would not commit sin, and evil or fallen angels could NOT possibly be classified as “sons of God.” The “sons of God” were NOT angels, because angels do not marry or reproduce.
Matthew 22:30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven. (KJV)
Mark 12:25 For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven. (KJV)
The “sons of God” could well mean those in the family of Seth, who were supposedly religious; and the “daughters of men” could be the descendants of the apostate Cain. This would have weakened the good influence of the faithful and increased moral depravity in the world, resulting in an explosion of evil. Personally, I feel the “sons of God” could NOT be angels. They were human, not angels, and their offspring (human) became more and more evil with each passing year.
Genesis 6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. (KJV)
The Nephilim were giants, people probably nine or ten feet tall. These may have been the same people mentioned in Numbers 13:33. Goliath, who was nine feet tall, appears in 1 Samuel 17. The Nephilim used their physical advantage to oppress the people around them. It really does not say here that the “sons of God” were giants. They may have been, but maybe not. The term “giant” in the Hebrew language does not so much imply the idea of great stature, but instead men of rash ferocity, irreverent and defiant characters. They probably were bullies and tyrants. For more on “giants” see: Num.13:33; Deut. 2:20-21; Deut. 3:11; 1 Sam.17:4; 2 Sam.21:15-22. . . . The “sons of God” in Job 1:6; 2:1; 38:7 are good angels.
What do I see in verse 4? Genesis is a book of genealogies . . . a book of the families. The sons of God are the godly line who have come down from Adam through Seth, and the daughters of men could well belong to the line of Cain. Could this be an intermingling and intermarriage of these two lines, until finally the entire line is totally corrupted (except for Noah). That is what I see here. I know that many scholars, good expositors, that say the sons of God are actually angels, and some refer to the Book of Enoch. If you accept that view, you are in good company. I certainly am NOT a scholar, I simply write what I feel, what God places on my heart.
No matter which way you look at this, the offspring of the sons of God and the daughters of men turned out BAD. They were so evil, that God simply could not take it any more. He destroyed the Earth with a tremendous Flood. That too, is a topic of much conversation, for many today refuse to believe the Flood really happened. The following verses are more than enough proof for me!
Genesis 6:13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth. (KJV)
Genesis 6:17 And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die. (KJV)
Genesis 7:4 For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth. (KJV)
Genesis 7:21 And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man: (KJV)
Genesis 7:23-24 And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark. [24] And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days. (KJV)
Genesis 9:11 And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth. (KJV)
Genesis 9:13 I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. (KJV)
GOD CANNOT LIE!!!
Titus 1:2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; (KJV)
Passages mentioned above.
Numbers 13:33 And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight. (KJV)
Deut. 2:20-21 (That also was accounted a land of giants: giants dwelt therein in old time; and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims; [21] A people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; but the LORD destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead: (KJV)
Deut. 3:11 For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of giants; behold, his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbath of the children of Ammon? nine cubits was the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man. (KJV)
1 Samuel 17:4 And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. (KJV)
2 Samuel 21:15-22 Moreover the Philistines had yet war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines: and David waxed faint. [16] And Ishbibenob, which was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear weighed three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being girded with a new sword, thought to have slain David. [17] But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the light of Israel. [18] And it came to pass after this, that there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob: then Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Saph, which was of the sons of the giant. [19] And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam. [20] And there was yet a battle in Gath, where was a man of great stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the giant.[21] And when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea the brother of David slew him. [22] These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants. (KJV)
Job 1:6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them. (KJV)
Job 2:1 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD. (KJV)
Job 38:7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? (KJV)
