What Is Light In The Bible?

LIGHT has many meanings in God’s Holy Word. First, it is the result of the divine command. Genesis 1:3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. [KJV]

LIGHT is the more joyous emotions of our mind, the pleasing sensations and happy hours of our life. Psalm 97:11 Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart. [KJV]

LIGHT typifies true religion and the pleasure it imparts. Matthew 4:16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up. [KJV]

LIGHT is the glorious inheritance of the redeemed. Colossians 1:12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: [KJV]

LIGHT, God dwells in light that is inaccessible. 1 Timothy 6:16 Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen. [KJV]

LIGHT often indicates instruction. Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. [KJV]

LIGHT is used of angels. 2 Corinthians 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. [KJV]

LIGHT was used to describe John the Baptist. John 5:35 He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. [KJV]

God is called “the Father of lights.” James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. [KJV]

LIGHT describes all true disciples. Matthew 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. [KJV]

LIGHT in its highest sense is applied to Christ. Malachi 4:2 But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall. [KJV] Luke 2:32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. [KJV] John 1:7-9 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. [8] He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. [9] That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. [KJV]

LIGHT is being one of God’s children. Matthew 5:14-16 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. [15] Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. [16] Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. [KJV]

What extinguishes our LIGHT for Christ. Mark 4:21 And he said unto them, Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick? [KJV]

Jesus is a Light for all mankind, but sad to say, just a “few” bask in His brilliance. John 1:4-5 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. [5] And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. [KJV]

God’s LIGHT exposes the darkness of sin. 1 John 1:5-6 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. [6] If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: [KJV]

God created LIGHT. Isaiah 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things. [KJV]

LIGHT IS DESCRIBED AS:

White and pure. Matthew 17:2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. [KJV]

Bright. Job 37:21 And now men see not the bright light which is in the clouds: but the wind passeth, and cleanseth them. [KJV]

Shining. 2 Samuel 23:4 And he shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain. [KJV]

Useful and precious. Ecclesiastes 2:13 Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness. [KJV]

Agreeable. Ecclesiastes 11:7 Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun: [KJV]

Manifesting objects. John 3:20-21 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. [21] But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. [KJV] Ephesians 5:13 But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. [KJV]

LIGHT is beyond man’s comprehension. Job 38:19-20
Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof, [20] That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof? [KJV] Job 38:24 By what way is the light parted, which scattereth the east wind upon the earth? [KJV]

How do we hide our LIGHT?

We hide our light by:

(1) being quiet when we should speak,
(2) going along with the majority of people even if they are wrong,
(3) denying Jesus,
(4) not repenting of sin,
(5) not telling others of Jesus,
(6) ignoring the needs of others,
(7) not being loving and kind.

We should be as a lighthouse on a rocky shore, warning others; a beacon of truth. We should never shut our light off from the rest of the world. It is in direct disobedience to Jesus. Let your LIGHT shine!
