HIS SERVANTS' MINISTRY

www.hisservants.org

Welcome to our website

Pictures of Christ

I am firmly opposed to any attempts to portray our Saviour and Lord, Jesus Christ, either in art work (pictures, drawings, paintings, images), or in movies or TV.

Early Christian art depicted Christ as standing, even triumphant, carrying the cross. Later Christian art depicted Christ bending under His cross, sometimes stumbling to His knees, even lying on the ground, apparently conquered. It is not this that I am opposed to, but that NO one truly knows what Jesus looked like, and no matter how ‘well’ the artist portrays Him, it still is NOT what our Lord really looked like.

Literally hundreds of artists have tried to portray Jesus.

Below are just a few:

Christ Crowned With Thorns by Dutchman, Jan Mostaert in 1510.

Crown Of Thorns by Italian, Correggio in about 1510.

Christ Carrying His Cross by Spaniard, El Greco in 1580

Head Of Christ by Rembrandt in 1655

White Crucifixion by Marc Chagall in 1938

Head Of Christ by Warner Sallman in 1940

ALL these portraits are DIFFERENT! Which one is Jesus? NONE of them! They all tend to lead people astray. I wonder what our precious Lord thinks of all these misrepresentations.

Jesus is God Himself! Those pictures mentioned above plus hundreds more, are in direct disobedience to the second Commandment.

Exodus 20:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: (KJV)

This is NO better that Israel embracing an idol that was supposed to represent the LORD. But, you say, "I don’t bow down or worship pictures of Jesus." If they don’t represent Jesus to you, why do you keep them?

What would your wife or husband think if you carried a picture of someone else in their wallet? Do you think they might be upset? Naturally they would. And so it is with those who have pictures of Jesus. He gets upset!

What about those who have the gall to represent our Lord in a movie? The latest craze is the "Passion of the Christ" with actor Jim Caviezel daring to portray our Lord.

John 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? (KJV) Can you possibly tell me what person would be so brazen as to say this? Yet in reality, anyone who dares to portray Jesus in a movie is saying this!

Anyone who dares to attempt to portray Christ in the flesh, is attempting to portray a "mystery."

1 Tim. 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. (KJV)

Without question, there is a great mystery of our faith: Christ appeared in the flesh and was shown to be righteous by the Spirit. Can ANY sinful man be declared justified by the Holy Spirit by portraying our Lord, Jesus in a movie? NO one can be shown to be right by the Spirit by doing this!

I know I will come under condemnation by many for what I write here, even by many professing Christians! I must write what my Lord places on my heart! It’s as simple as that! If someone doesn’t agree with it, that is their privilege, their right.

When someone sees a movie about Jesus, most people "see" the actor who played Christ as what our Lord really looks like. Do you honestly think this pleases our Lord? Do you KNOW what Jesus looks like? Of course not! He does NOT look like any of those who boldly attempt to portray Him.

I have not seen the Passion of the Christ, nor will I be seeing it any time in the future. I will simply take God’s Word for what happened before, during and after the crucifixion, and I will gratefully praise my precious Saviour and Lord (Heb.13:15), for redeeming my soul (Heb.9:12; 1 Pet.1:19), for making me a child of God (John 1:12-13), and for preparing a mansion in Heaven for me (John 14:1-3, 1 Pet.1:3-5).
