With
or Without Christ
John
6:14-15 Then those men, when
they had seen the miracle that Jesus did,
said, This is of a truth that prophet
that should come into the world. [15]
When Jesus therefore perceived that they
would come and take him by force, to make
him a king, he departed again into a mountain
himself alone. (KJV)
John
6:16-21 And when even was
now come, his disciples went down unto
the sea, [17] And entered into a ship,
and went over the sea toward Capernaum.
And it was now dark, and Jesus was not
come to them. [18] And the sea arose by
reason of a great wind that blew. [19]
So when they had rowed about five and
twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus
walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto
the ship: and they were afraid. [20] But
he saith unto them, It
is I; be not afraid. [21]
Then they willingly received him into
the ship: and immediately the ship was
at the land whither they went. (KJV)
A
furlong is about 1/8 of a mile or 220
yards. The Sea of Galilee is 650 feet
below sea level, 150 feet deep, and surrounded
by hills. This makes it subject to sudden
wind storms and extremely high waves.
Such storms were expected but they were
scary.
When
Jesus came to the disciples during a storm,
walking on the water (about 3 1/2 miles
from shore), they were afraid.
Matthew
14:26 And when the disciples
saw him walking on the sea, they were
troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and
they cried out for fear. (KJV)
We
often face spiritual and emotional storms
and feel tossed about like a small boat
on a big lake. In spite of terrifying
circumstances, if we trust our lives to
Christ, He will give us peace in ANY storm.
John
6:17 And entered into a ship,
and went over the sea toward Capernaum.
And it was now dark, and Jesus was not
come to them. (KJV)
1.
It was DARK! There is
nothing more dark than
being without Jesus! He is the Light of
the world.
John
1:4-5 In him was life; and
the life was the light of men. [5] And
the light shineth in darkness; and the
darkness comprehended it not. (KJV)
The
darkness of evil never has and never will
extinguish God’s light. Jesus is
the Creator of life, and His life brings
light to mankind. His light makes us see
ourselves as we
really are (sinners in need of a Saviour).
With Jesus, the true Light, we can avoid
walking blindly and falling into sin.
He lights the path ahead of us so we can
see how to live. He removes the darkness
of sin from our lives.
In
Acts 9, Saul met Jesus at noon, but the
Presence of the glorified Christ was brighter
than the noon day sun! The Light of Jesus
was so bright Saul fell from his horse
and was blinded for 3 days (9:9).
In
the Bible Darkness is
a symbol for evil and the power of Satan.
(Ephes. 6:12; Col. 1:13)
Light is a symbol of
Christ and everything good. (Mal.4:2;
Luke 2:32; John 1:7-9)
To be without Christ is really
being in the dark.
A.
Without Christ is to have NO hope.
NO hope
of a good life.
NO hope of forgiveness.
NO hope for eternal life in Heaven.
All hope of Heaven rests in Christ.
Only with Jesus in our life do we have
a solid HOPE!
B.
Without Christ is to have NO Truth.
All that is Christ is Truth. All that
is without Christ is false.
2 Tim. 3:7 Ever learning,
and never able to come to the knowledge
of the truth. [KJV]
C.
Without Christ is to have NO direction.
Only with Christ wil you get correct directions
for this life, and the life to come.
John 14:6 Jesus saith
unto him, I
am the way, the truth, and the life: no
man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (KJV) Without Christ a person is totally
lost in the dark.
John
6:18 And the sea arose by
reason of a great wind that blew.
(KJV)
2.
The SEA AROSE is the turbulence of life.
A.
Sickness comes when we are without Christ. It comes also when we have Christ, but
He helps us through it. Only when we get
to Heaven will there be NO sickness. Rev.
21:4 And God shall wipe away
all tears from their eyes; and there shall
be no more death, neither sorrow, nor
crying, neither shall there be any more
pain: for the former things are passed
away. (KJV)
B.
War and rumors of wars are because people
are without Christ. James
4:1-2 From whence come wars
and fightings among you? come they not
hence, even of your lusts that war in
your members? [2] Ye lust, and have not:
ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot
obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have
not, because ye ask not. (KJV) All
the fighting between the nations is because
the world is without Christ. Fighting,
turmoil and crime is the result of a nation
without Christ.
C.
Family trouble comes from people without
Christ. 2 Tim.
3:2-4 For men shall be lovers
of their own selves, covetous, boasters,
proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents,
unthankful, unholy, [3] Without natural
affection, trucebreakers, false accusers,
incontinent, fierce, despisers of those
that are good, [4] Traitors, heady, highminded,
lovers of pleasures more than lovers of
God; (KJV) Children would obey parents,
husbands and wives would get along if
they had Christ in their lives.
John
6:18 And the sea arose by
reason of a great wind that blew. (KJV)
3.
The WINDS BLEW. Wind is
invisible, but is extremely powerful.
You can feel it, but you cannot see it.
Think of the damage a tornado or hurricane
can cause.
A.
In our lives we have winds of doubt and
fear. We can’t see
doubt, worry, depression or fear, but
we can sure feel them. And when strong
enough, these can cause great problems
for us.
Consider a person lost in absolute darkness.
First doubt set in, “I don’t
know if I can get out of here.”
Then fear takes over! “I’m
going to die.” This is like a person
without Christ. First the doubt, “Is
there really a Hell where sinners go?
How can I pay for my sins?” Then
panic! “Will I go to Hell?”
Without Christ, the answer is YES according
to the Bible.
B.
There are also winds of false doctrine. Without Christ, the way is open to all
false doctrines of the devil. Only with
Christ can the winds of false doctrine
be stopped. People are vulnerable to the
part truths of the devil without Christ.
And those part-truths can lead you to
Hell.
John
6:19-B . . . they see Jesus
walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto
the ship: and they were afraid. (KJV)
4.
THEY WERE AFRAID. When
the disciples saw Jesus walking on the
water, in the middle of the sea, they
were afraid. People today are afraid of
things connected to Jesus.
A.
Afraid of changes they might have to make
to be a follower of Christ.
John 8:11-B. . . go,
and sin no more. (KJV) People do not want to leave their
sins.
B. Afraid
to face death. Jesus brings
us face to face with the fact that we
will die one day. He tells us straight,
there shall be judgment after death. Those
without Christ are afraid.
Hebrews 9:27 And
as it is appointed unto men once to die,
but after this the judgment: (KJV)
We ALL shall stand before the Judge one
day to give account of what we have done.
Romans
14:12 So then every one of
us shall give account of himself to God.
(KJV)
C.
People are afraid of what their friends
might say. Many people
today are not Christians for this reason.
We need to worry about what God thinks
. . . NOT what People will think or say
if we accept Christ. Almighty God will
be the Judge, NOT people.
1
Thes. 2:19-20 For what is
our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing?
Are not even ye in the presence of our
Lord Jesus Christ at his coming? [20]
For ye are our glory and joy. (KJV)
John
16:9 Of
sin, because they believe not on me. [KJV] The world's worst
sin is unbelief!
D.
People are afraid of making a commitment
to Jesus. Those
who are truly children of God must serve
God, and do it in a loving and willing
way. They must have a
close relationship with Jesus. Jesus not
only asks us to get rid of our sins, but
asks us to do things for Him.
John
6:20-21 But he saith unto
them, It
is I; be not afraid. [21]
Then they willingly received him into
the ship: and immediately the ship was
at the land whither they went.(KJV)
5. When
the disciples saw that it was Jesus, THEY
RECEIVED HIM into the ship.
A.
Even the most fearful person,
if they really knew Jesus, would not be
afraid, for there is nothing to fear with
Christ on your side. Jesus is the only begotten Son
of God. (John 1:14; 1:18; 3:16; 3:18;
Heb.11:17; 1 John 4:9). He is the express
image of His person (Heb.1:3), He is the
Lamb of God (John 1:29; 1:36), He is the
Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the
end, the first and the last (Rev. 1:8;
1:11; 21:6; 22:13).
B. Jesus is
GOD (John 10:30). He
is all wise, He can do anything! He knows
everything. No strength can match His.
- He brought water out of a rock to
give water to the thirsty Israelites.
- He brought manna down from Heaven
for 40 years.
- He brought quails with the east wind
to hush the people’s murmering.
- He parted the Red Sea so the people
could leave their slave masters in
Egypt.
- He
made the Jordan River to stand in
a heap so the people could cross over
to the Promised Land.
- He
caused the walls of Jerico to fall.
etc., etc.
- He
knows the number of hairs on your
head.
JESUS
IS GOD!
C.
Jesus is good to us. Romans
8:28 And we know that all
things work together for good to them
that love God, to them who are the called
according to his purpose. [KJV] No
matter what kind of troubles you have,
the end results of ALL things will be
good! BUT, this verse applies ONLY to
those with Christ.
When
you have Jesus in your life:
- You are safe from storms.
- Your sins are forgive.
- Heaven is established as your eternal
destination.
John
14:2-3 In
my Father's house are many mansions: if
it were not so, I would have told you.
I go to prepare a place for you. [3] And
if I go and prepare a place for you, I
will come again, and receive you unto
myself; that where I am, there ye may
be also. (KJV)
WITHOUT
CHRIST it is dark. The winds are blowing. The
sea is tossing and turning, rising with
huge waves that seem to engulf you.
WITH
CHRIST it is safe! It is calm
and secure and settled.
Matthew 14:28-33 And
Peter answered him and said, Lord, if
it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the
water. [29] And he said, Come. And when
Peter was come down out of the ship, he
walked on the water, to go to Jesus. [30]
But when he saw the wind boisterous, he
was afraid; and beginning to sink, he
cried, saying, Lord, save me. [31] And
immediately Jesus stretched forth his
hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of
little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? [32] And when they were
come into the ship, the wind ceased. [33]
Then they that were in the ship came and
worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou
art the Son of God. (KJV)
