What
Do You Do with Your Past?
When you
look back over your life, what do you see? Do
you see things of joy and satisfaction? Or do
you see things which brings distress, heartbreak,
and great shame to your heart? Are we really prepared
to make a true assessment, of the past 20 years?
the past 10 years? the past year?
There’s
one truth that we can lay down for all the years.
The past is GONE! There is absolutely nothing
that we can do about it. We CANNOT change one event
or one experience in any way, shape or fashion.
Wrong is wrong! From the moment we do it, it is
wrong! But it is the past! The apostle Paul said
that there IS something a Christian can do about
the past, something that he did.
Philip.
3:13-14 Brethren, I count not myself
to have apprehended: but this one thing I do,
forgetting those things which are behind, and
reaching forth unto those things which are before,
[14] I press toward the mark for the prize of
the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. [KJV] . . . What "one thing" did he
do? He FORGOT the past! "This one thing I do." HOW can we forget the past???
We cannot, without help from our Lord. But it
is possible! Did Paul have anything ‘bad or evil’
in his past that he would want to forget? Yes!
See: Acts 7:58; 8:1,3; 9:1-2; 22:4.
God
did give us memories, and there are certain things
we should remember. So, just what should we remember?
"Remember!" He said to the children
of Israel, when He brought them out of the land
of bondage.
Exodus
13:3 And Moses said unto the people,
Remember this day, in which ye came out from Egypt,
out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the Lord brought you out from this place:-
- -[KJV] They were to remember and never forget it. When you go through the Bible,
you will find that the word remember is
usually associated with God and the word forget is associated with man. God remembers much better
than we do. We find in Genesis that God remembered
Noah. We find man is always forgetting the good
things that God does for us.
Psalm
106:21 They forgat God their saviour,
which had done great things in Egypt; [KJV] So, so tragic! We should NEVER
forget God! But Israel did, and so do we! We forget
things we should remember, and remember things
we should forget.
The
Bible tells us that to forget certain things is
sin. All the way through the Bible He says to
us, "Remember."
Eccles.12:1 Remember now thy Creator in the days
of thy youth …".
Even after you leave this life, you will still
remember, and you’ll remember for eternity. In
Luke 16:25, Abraham in Sheol said to the rich
man who was in torment, "Remember."
All those who reject Christ, will take the memory
of refusing Him and His salvation into eternity.
My friend, with a memory like this, you wouldn’t
need much fire to make it a Hell!
MEMORIES
YOU WILL HAVE
If
you choose the broad road that leads to Hell,
That place of judgment, where all evil dwells.
You will have memories, for ever more,
The Bible does tell what is held in store.
Today most folk
don’t study the Good Book,
They’d see for themselves, if they’d
just look!
ALL who reject Christ, will end up in Hell,
And in that awful place, for e’er they’ll
dwell!
Those who are there,
wish they had one more try,
They look back; and for loved ones do cry.
Rejection of Jesus, they see in remorse,
If they had one more chance, they’d change
their course!
The anger, pain,
misery, and the thirst,
All the suffering; their minds near do burst.
Such a clear memory, of when on Earth,
But they rejected Christ, and all His worth!
If you were to ask any one of those,
There in dark Hell, where God’s judgment flows,
“Is there any thing I can do for you?”
They’d say: “Yes, tell others what Christ can do.”

Scripture verses for above poem:
(Mt.7:13-14; Lu.16:19-31; Jn.3:15-18,36; 8:24; 16:9; 1:12-13)
What
Should We Forget?
I
will bring up several things that we should forget.
The
first thing is STUPID MISTAKES or BLUNDERS. These we should forget. In "forgetting
the things which are behind," we are
to forget our blunders. Sometimes we do damage
that we did not mean to do. Is there something
you wish you had not said? For me, yes! I wish
I had bitten off my tongue. Or, did you do something
you had no intention of doing? For me, yes! I’m
sorry immediately, but I did it. I would not have
done it intentionally for anything in the world.
The
second thing is SENSITIVITY. Or
being overly sensitive. Our society reeks of rivalries,
competition, alienations and personality conflicts.
Somebody is going to offend you, and you are going
to be hurt. Or you will hurt someone. You will
be wounded in life’s struggle. What should you
do? Do you nurse grudges and hurts? Do you carry
ill feelings and spread confusion and commotion?
What should you do? Forget them! "Forgetting
those things which are behind." You cannot
have the peace and comfort of God unless you do!
A
third thing that we must forget: our SUCCESSES. Success
is the most difficult of all to forget. It is
something you don’t want to forget! It’s human
to want to remember and bask in the good feeling.
Paul said: Philippians 4:11,12… I have
learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to
be content. I know both how to be abased, and
I know how to abound …". To abound
and to be successful, is really the most difficult
to forget.
In
America we measure a man by how much money has
he made. Has he been a success in business? We
measure a man by the schools where he was educated,
by his job, and by his power. These values are
wrong according to God. Many are successful in
business, but are failures at home. Many people
have a famous name but is a failure in marriage.
If you have made money this past year, if you
have attained the position you wanted, may I suggest
this as a friend: FORGET IT! It will do nothing
but harm you (pride) by remembering how good you
are. You need to humble yourself before Almighty
God and "Forgetting those things which
are behind." It will do us good to forget
our successes.
The
fourth thing we are forget is our SORROWS. Perhaps you have lost a loved one recently. Maybe
tragedy came your way and sorrow fills your heart. My friend, I do not mean to sound pessimistic,
but if sorrow has not come, it WILL come. Death
is no respecter of persons. It comes to the palace
of a pharaoh and the hut of a peasant. It pays
no attention to the status of the individual.
It comes to all. If tragedy did come to you and
sorrow did fill your heart, may I say to you kindly:
forget it. I don’t mean to forget your loved one.
I mean to forget your sorrow. Many ask: "Why
did God let this happen to me?" My friend,
God lets it happen to His children for a reason.
2
Cor. 1:3-4 Blessed be God, even
the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father
of mercies, and the God of all comfort; [4] Who
comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we
may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble,
by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted
of God. [KJV] God will let you go
down through the dark valleys, so that He might
reach out and comfort you. Friends or family cannot
truly comfort you. Any time you are truly comforted,
it is God who did it. He is the "God of
all comfort." He alone can comfort you,
and He comforts you so that when you see someone
else in the same trouble as you, His Word can
bring comfort to them through you.
When
King David’s little son died (2 Samuel 12), David
arose and washed his face, changed his clothes
and went to the house of the Lord and worshipped,
then he went home and ate. His servants were baffled.
They asked him, "Why is it that when the
little one was still alive you fasted and wept,
but now that the child is dead you no longer mourn?"
David answered, "He is dead, why should I
fast? I can’t bring him back again." What
David was saying was: "I’ll forget the things
that are behind, and I’ll move forward to things
that are ahead." He forgot his sorrows.
The
fifth thing we must forget is our SINS. What do you do with your sins? The Word of God
says to confess them. Confess them promptly to
God, and then forget them. We are to correct what
we have done when we injure someone. But after
we have dealt with it and confessed it, we are
to forget it! "Forgetting those things
which are behind." Confess to God privately, not publicly,
and when you do that, forget the sin, because
God has.
If
your sins are not forgiven, or maybe you are not
sure they are forgiven, you can wipe out the past,
with all of its sins and stains. Would you like
to KNOW that all your horrible sins are forgiven?
Would you like to get out from under that heavy
burden? Matthew 11:28-30 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy
laden, and I will give you rest. [29] Take my
yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek
and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto
your souls. [30] For my yoke is easy, and my burden
is light. [KJV] Only Jesus can
give us rest from lugging around our heavy burdens.
Only Jesus can give us rest for our souls.
God
will not only forgive you your sins, but He will
also forget them. God says:
Jeremiah
31:34 - - - for I will forgive
their iniquity, and I will remember their sin
no more. [KJV]
Psalm
103:12 As far as the east is from
the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions
from us. [KJV] God
puts our sins behind Him and He won’t turn around
to retrieve them. He forgets them.
Micah
7:18-19 Who is a God like
unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth
by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage?
he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he
delighteth in mercy. [19] He will turn again,
he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue
our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins
into the depths of the sea. [KJV] There is NO other God like Him. He pardons
the sins of His people? He will not stay angry
with us forever. He delights in showing mercy
to us. He has compassion on us. He will trample
our sins under His feet and throw them into the
deepest part of the ocean!
Hebrews
8:12 For I will be merciful
to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their
iniquities will I remember no more.
[KJV] He will forgive our wrongdoings, and He
will never remember our sins again.
1
John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he
is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and
to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. [KJV] We must first admit to ourselves
that we have sinned. We must admit that God is
right and we are wrong. For if we say we don’t
have any sin, we fool only ourselves and refuse
to accept the truth. But, when we confess our
sins to God, He is faithful and just and will
forgive us and cleanse us from every wrong. Our
slate is wiped clean because of our faith in Jesus! PRAISE GOD!
