2 Peter 2:20-22, False Professors

2 Peter 2:20-22 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. [21] For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. [22] But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire. [KJV]

Peter is speaking about false teachers in this chapter. Some apostate teachers may have a head knowledge of Christ . . . but even if they may know about Him, they have no love of the Truth (2 Thes.2:10). Many people say, “I’m a Christian.” These people think they are very religious. They belong to a church and attend regularly. BUT . . . they do NOT believe the Bible is really the Word of God. These people and these modern churches talk a lot about love and brotherhood. They have a beautiful church and the pastor preaches a lovely sermon (?) that makes everyone feel good (2 Tim.4:3-4). They think that they have escaped the pollutions of the world . . . but they have NOT escaped its corruptions.

Many have heard the Gospel, but they admit that they don’t believe it. Some even doubt that there is a God. Peter deals with the apostasy that was coming into the church through false teachers who were creeping in and teaching false doctrines, teaching that which is contrary to the Word of God. Peter says that they pervert the Truth of God, and they do it for their own advantage. So many rich preachers! What did Jesus have? (Mat.8:20). These false teachers exalt themselves INSTEAD of exalting Christ. They rarely use the Word of God. They use books by man instead of the Bible. They try to impress people on how intellectual they are, and their only goal is making money. They claim they can change people. They claim to have a supernatural power to heal and/or to perform miracles. ONLY GOD CAN HEAL OR DO MIRACLES!!! Some of these false teachers are living secretly in lust and sin. ALL secret sins shall one day be revealed (Ps.44:21; Rom.2:16). You may hide your sin from people . . . but you CANNOT hide anything from Almighty God!

I cannot fight false teachers. All that I can do is do my best to expose them . . . and I work long and hard at doing so. But one day God shall expose them, and He shall also to judge them.

This does not necessarily mean that they had been TRUE Christians. People may appear to reform outwardly, and seem to escape from the corruptions around them, but their heart still is NOT right with the Lord.

Through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Neither does this imply that they were true Christians, or that they had ever had any saving knowledge of the Redeemer. There is a knowledge of the doctrines and duties of religion which may lead sinners to abandon their outward vices, but have NO connection with saving grace. People may PROFESS religion, and may know enough about religion to understand that it requires them to abandon their vicious habits, but still never be true Christians, because they do not POSSESS Christ in their heart. Take C-H-R-I-S-T out of "Christian" and what do you have? NOTHING!

They are again entangled therein and overcome. The word rendered entangled is where we get our word implicate, means to braid in, to interweave; to involve in, to entangle. Here it means that they become implicated in vices like an animal that is entangled in a net.

The latter end is worse with them than the beginning. This is usually the case. Apostates always become worse than they were before their professed conversion. Reformed drunks go back to their booze again, becoming worse that ever. Peter speaks of those who had been addicted to any habits of vice, and who profess to become religious, and then fall away. They sadly are "again entangled" (Luke 11:26; Heb.6:4; 10:26).

2 Peter 2:21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.

Peter says that it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than, having known it, to then turn away from the Gospel . . . turn their back on God. If you started to read this and were unsaved . . . and you finish it and are still unsaved, I am your worst enemy, because now you have heard the Gospel and you can never go into the Presence of God and tell Him that you have never heard the Gospel. You have heard it, and it will NOT be well with your soul on Judgment Day.

2 Peter 2:22 But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

In the parable of the prodigal son, the young rebel was a son when he left home; he was a son when he got to the far country; he was a son while he was living in sin; and he was a son in the pigpen. And because he was a son, he made a statement one day, a statement that no pig could ever make. Luke 15:17-19 And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! [18] I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, [19] And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants. (KJV)

What will the father do with his boy when he returns home? According to the Mosaic Law, that boy was to have been stoned to death (Deut. 21:18-21) . . . but he was NOT stoned to death. The son went back and confessed his sin, like we should do (1 John 1:9). “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you!” But his father wouldn’t let him finish. He could have told one of his servants, “Go cut me a hickory switch. I’m going to whip this boy. He has disgraced me and spent my money.” But that’s not what happened! The boy had already been whipped but good! All prodigals get their whipping when they run away from home, but when they come back to the heavenly Father, there is always a banquet, a robe, and a ring. Hallelujah!

In 2 Peter 2:20-22, Peter is NOT speaking of “born again” believers, but of people who have learned about Christ and how to be saved, and has been influenced by Christians, but then rejects the Truth and returns to his/her sin. A person like this is worse off than before, because he/she has rejected the only way out of sin, and the only possible Way of salvation. They are like a person who can’t swim and are drowning in the ocean, but refuses to grab the life-saving rope thrown to him/her. Anyone who turns away from Christ throws away his/her only means of escape.

Matthew 12:43-45 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. [44] Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. [45] Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation. [KJV]

In this Passage, Jesus was describing the attitude of Israel and the religious leaders. To simply clean up one’s life without filling it with God leaves a lot of room for Satan to come in. Getting rid of sin in our lives is the first step, BUT, we must also take the second step: filling our lives with God’s Word and the Holy Spirit.

Jesus was illustrating our faulty human tendency . . . we desire to reform but the reformation does not last long. It is NOT enough for us to be emptied of evil; we must then be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit to accomplish God’s new purpose in our lives.

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, [23] Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. [KJV]

The fruit of the Spirit is the spontaneous work of the Holy Spirit in us. The Spirit produces character traits in us, that are found in the nature of Christ. They are the by-products of Christ’s control. We CANNOT obtain any of these by trying to get them without His help. To have the fruit of the Spirit , we must join our lives to Christ Jesus (John 15:4-5). We must know Him, love Him, obey Him, and imitate Him. When we do this, we will fulfill the intended purpose of the law . . . to love God and our neighbors (Mat.22:37-40).


Millions of people world wide refuse to accept Jesus, the ONLY One who can save them. No matter what you think, Jesus is the ONLY Way to Heaven! . . . Truth is truth whether you believe it or not.

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (KJV)

Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. (KJV)

John 8:24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. (KJV)

2 Cor. 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. (KJV) They refuse to believe what God so plainly states about His only begotten Son.

1 John 5:10-12 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. [11] And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. [12] He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. (KJV)

The Gospel in a nutshell!

John 3:14-18 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: [15] That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. [16] For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. [17] For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. [18] He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. (KJV)

If you read what I have written and still reject Christ, I am your enemy . . . because now you CANNOT go into the Presence of God and tell Him that you never heard the Gospel. I have absolutely NO power to save you or anyone else. But the power to save you comes from the words above that I have written in this article. God’s Word has power, I do not!

Multitudes will NOT be set free. They will be judged and condemned to an eternal Hell. But regardless of our destiny, one day every knee must bow to Him, and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord (Isa.45:23; Rom.14:11; Phil.2:10). EVERY person who has ever lived will have to bow to Him someday. We either do it NOW with Jesus as our Saviour and Lord, OR later, as your Judge! Your decision! We are a savour of life to some and a savour of death to others.

2 Cor. 2:17 For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ. We are NEVER to corrupt the Word of God OR distort it OR make merchandise of it . . . ever! We are to give it out willingly and in sincerity and fear, as the Spirit of God reveals its Truth to us.

Many are the false teachers in our midst today, and it won’t be long that the One World Religion will be here. I recently saw a video showing the pope in a meeting with ALL the religious leaders of the world. You name it, they were there! Even down to an American Indian smoking a peace pipe, and witches. The pope kissed the Koran in this video.
Jesus could come any day now! The Rapture is the next event on God’s calendar. Beware my friend. Stay close to Jesus. Watch! Live as He wants you to live! I want to be your friend, not your enemy!
