The Root of Faith

I think a big problem of many people is that they do not understand about Biblical "repentance." They confuse the "root" of the believer's faith with the "fruit" of faith.

Romans 4:3-5 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. 4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. 5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. (KJV) . . . Just WHAT does the Bible say about Abraham? "Abraham believed God," and because of his FAITH . . . God accepted him as righteous. BUT the Passage above also goes on to say that ANYONE who thinks they have to WORK for salvation is NOT counting on the GRACE of God to save them. A person who works is paid wages, and their wages are NOT considered a GIFT, but something they earned. SALVATION is a GIFT from our marvelous and majestic God! (Rom.6:23; Eph.2:8). You cannot pay for a gift or it is NOT a gift!

It is quite clear that Abraham did NOT work for his salvation! Abraham believed God! Galatians 3:6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. (KJV) . . . The salvation of Abraham was a GIFT from God . . . he did NOT earn it . . . his salvation was an undeserved favor . . . by the amazing grace of God . . . because he believed God. John 6:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. (KJV) . . . The ONLY work we need to do is the same work that Abraham did . . . BELIEVE God! Just like Jesus tells us!

But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. . . . There is absolutely NOTHING that you can do that will merit salvation. "There is none righteous, no, not one" (Rom. 3:10). "Abraham's faith was counted for righteousness" and it is the same with us today! God does NOT change (Mal.3:6). Faith in God is the only condition of salvation. God accepts your faith in Him, NOT any of your works. Our faith simply honors God and secures our righteousness. God accredited Abraham's righteousness to his account because of his faith, NOT his works!

The Fruit of Faith

Do not confuse the "root" of the believer's faith with the "fruit" of the believer's faith. James 2:18-21 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. 19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. 20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? (KJV)

Repentance in the Bible means a change of mind, and/or a change of direction. The Bible clearly teaches that repentance is necessary for salvation (Acts 2:38). It is impossible for anyone to be saved without repentance. But what exactly is repentance in the Bible? Repentance is when we make a U-turn in our mind concerning Christ and our sins. Repentance is recognizing that we are sinners. Repentance is agreeing with God that we are vile sinners, just as He has stated in His Holy Word. (Ps.14:1-3; 53:1-3; 130:3; 143:2; Pro.20:9; Ecc.7:20; Isa.6:5; 53:6; 59:3; 64:6; Jer.2:29; 6:13; Mic.7:2; John 8:7; 15:22; Rom.1:20; 2:1; 3:9; 5:12; Gal.3:22; 1 Jn.1:8).

To be saved my friend, you MUST come to Christ as a SINNER (1 John 1:8-10). If you disagree with God, then why would you need a Saviour? WHY would a self-righteous person ask Christ for forgiveness? Jesus said that He did NOT come to save the righteous; but to call sinners to repentance (Mk.2:17). You ARE a sinner, whether you think so or not! 1 John 1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. (KJV) . . . Repentance is admitting you are a sinner and turn away from it! Turn away from that "good" image you have of yourself and confess to God that you are a sinner. The unsaved unrepentant man wants NOTHING to do with God or His Word (John 3:20). When a person truly repents, they cast away the pleasures of sin and begin trusting and obeying God, because they now are in total agreement with God that their sins are wrong and wicked. They now know they must turn to Christ Jesus for the forgiveness of those sins. That my friend, is Biblical repentance. AND when you truly and sincerely repent, you actually HATE sin, ALL sin! And the fact is, you CANNOT sin and be pleasing to God! 1 John 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. (KJV) . . . ANY person who is truly "born again" spiritually into God's family (John 1:12-13; 3:3-9), are given the Holy Spirit at the moment of salvation. (1 Cor.12:13). IF a person does NOT have the Spirit of Christ, he/she is none of His . . . they are NOT God's TRUE children (Rom.8:9). God's Words, not mine!

Denying Christ

There are SO many ways to deny or reject the Bible and Christ Jesus. BEWARE!!! Consider the following:

Cults Reject Bible and Jesus

  • Rejection of the Godhead (Trinity) and replaced by their invented 'ism'
  • Rejection of the Deity of Christ or Christ as God including His virgin birth
  • Rejection of Christ's true humanity
  • Rejection of Christ and replaced by their leader as the "new christ"
  • Rejection of salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone
  • Rejection of God's plan of grace and replaced with their religious legalism.
  • Rejection of Christ as the only Saviour and introduced their co-redeemer.
  • Rejection of the finished work of the Lord Jesus on the Cross for all men
  • Rejection of the spiritual death of Christ on the Cross
  • Rejection of the Lord Jesus Christ's bodily resurrection
  • Rejection of Christ's bodily ascension
  • Rejection of the absolute authority of the Bible, replaced or combined with their source of authority as books, publications, or writing and words of their own leaders
  • Rejection of Bible doctrine, replaced or combined with their religious doctrines.
  • Rejection of the Bible, replaced with extra-biblical revelation.
Rejection of the Universal Church, claiming they alone are saved or to be saved.
  • Rejection of the doctrine of eternal punishment and the reality of Hell.
  • Rejection of the major biblical doctrines, majoring on minor doctrines.
  • Rejection of Christ, replacing Him with their leader as the messenger of God.
  • Rejection of Bible doctrine, putting emphasis on emotional experiences.
  • Rejection of doctrinal study, emphasis on direct revelation or vision from God.
  • Rejection of Biblical dispensations, insisting on sign gifts.
  • Rejection of Bible doctrine and are antagonistic against those who teach Bible doctrine.
  • Rejection of the fact that no one can determine the Return of Christ until the fulfillment of the Rature, calculating Christ's return and of the end times.
  • Rejection of the doctrines that edify the Church, but invent non-biblical ways to expand the church in number.
  • Rejection of proper Biblical interpretation, depending instead on mystical and supernatural revelation through anointing, prayer and fasting.
  • Rejection of Bible doctrine and accepting spiritism, occultism, extra-biblical beliefs, para-normal and adaptation of paganistic rituals or practices.

It is really a sad situation that most people reject Jesus as their personal Saviour and continue on that big broad road to HELL! There are just a meager FEW (Mat.7:13-14), who choose to come to Christ. The vast majority deny Christ, the ONLY One who can save them! It is at the very moment that you sincerely decide to turn to Jesus, that repentance takes place. It is at this very moment that we are given the Holy Spirit to help us live a GODLY life, a RIGHTEOUS life! All these wise ones turn to the Saviour, and are forgiven of their sins. The Holy Spirit abides within ALL who are TRULY saved! God will NEVER make a mistake and give His Spirit if a person is not really sincere in their commiement to Christ! And once God gives the Holy Spirit to a TRULY born again believer, the Spirit remains within that person FOR EVER (John 14:16).

SO . . . a TRUE Christian "cannot" sin, just as the apostle says in 1 John 3:9. I MUST repeat this verse because it is extremely important! 1 John 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. (KJV) . . . WHO remains in a believer??? The Holy Spirit . . . GOD, my friend!

Remember: Romans 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. (KJV) . . . IF a person does NOT have the Spirit of Christ, he/she is NOT a TRUE child of God! They are NOT in God's family, they are in the devil's family! (1 John 3:10).

When a TRUE Christian sins . . . and we certainly will . . . the Holy Spirit within us will NOT let us rest until we make it right with God! 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (KJV) . . . Confess your sin simply means you agree with God that you were wrong in your thoughts, words or actions. You sinned! He is right! You are wrong! Get rid of it immediately!

The grace of God saved us . . . the grace of God certainly can keep us! He in His abundant mercy will forgive us when we confess our sin. My advice: learn from your mistakes! If you don't learn from your mistakes and keep doing the same sin over and over again, you are "continuing in sin" or practicing sin! 1 John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. (KJV) . . . "Committeth" sin is literally "doeth" sin, meaning someone who lives continually and habitually in sin . . . practicing sin. Unbelievers do not have the Holy Spirit within them, and these people live in sin continually, BUT, when a person is a TRUE Christian, continuing on in sin just is not possible. So, TRUE Christians do NOT . . . in any way, have a license to sin!

1 John 3:24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us. (KJV)
