?? ETERNAL SECURITY" A License To Sin ??

The huge argument against the Biblical doctrine of eternal security . . . to those who do not understand it, is that its opponents believe it is a 'license to sin' for believers of Christ.

Salvation really is a simple three step process:

  • #1 We must recognize we are a sinner.
  • #2 We must understand that Jesus paid the penalty for our sin on the Cross of Calvary.
  • #3 We must repent and be converted.

Acts 3:19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; (KJV)

When a person sincerely repents of their sin and trusts Jesus, the Scripture then says that person becomes a "new creature."

2 Cor.5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (KJV) . . . Repentance is MUCH more than sorrow, regret, despair or grief over sin. Bible repentance means a change of mind toward God . . . You admit that He is right and you are wrong . . . and the outcome of that repentance is a change of action, a change in the way that you live. You have a deep sorrow within that makes you bound and determined to change. Until a person truly repents, he feels comfortable about himself and his ways; but when the Saviour, through His Holy Spirit abiding within, takes over a person's life, he changes his mind about himself completely, seeing NOTHING good in his heart or in his works and his soul cries out desperately: "Lord be merciful to me, as sinner." (Ps.41:4; 51:1-4; 86:3; Luke 18:13-14).

Repentance is part of believing. But, repentance is not faith, nor is faith repentance. "He that believeth" implies repentance (Mark 16:16; John 3:18,36; 6:35,47; 12:44). "Repent and be converted" implies faith (Acts 3:19). Let's look at what repentance is NOT.

Repentance is NOT fear of God's anger coming from a consciousness of guilt or grief as a consequence of that guilt. Judas was guilty of a horrible crime . . . betraying the only begotten Son of God. The Bible says that he was so filled with despair that he went out and hanged himself (Mat.27:4-5).
There is no indication any where that Judas had any sorrow for any other sin in his life, and he asked no pardon for his betrayal of Jesus. Judas deeply regretted what he had done, but that is NOT the same as TRUE repentance. Judas had no change of mind or heart that would have resulted in a changed life, but instead killed himself. He was sorry for his crime, but he had no faith in the forgiveness of Jesus. It seems he trusted his own works, NOT Jesus.

Repentance, as relating to salvation, means to turn TO God and AWAY from sin. It means to humbly bow before Jesus as the Master of one's life. It involves a change of mind concerning Whose will is supreme . . . yours or His . . . and involves a change in the way a person lives as a result. There is NO salvation without TRUE repentance.

Repentance is to deny self (Mat.10:33; 16:24-27) while by faith confirming Christ. Repentance looks within; faith looks above. Repentance exposes us all as miserable sinners; faith delivers us from that misery. Repentance is a change of mind, followed by a change of action. But it is NOT an instantaneous change, or the following would make no sense.

Phil.1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: (KJV) . . . Repenting and trusting Jesus means that we turn our sin nature over to Jesus and to allow Him to make the changes in us.

Romans 7:18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. (KJV) . . . Jesus has BEGUN a good work in believers, but the Bible says it is a PROCESS in which Jesus will CONTINUE to perform that good work until the day we stand before Him at the Judgment Seat.

IF a sinner wants to be saved, he/she MUST repent, and TRUE repentance will ALWAYS result in a changed life . . . or that person is NOT saved at all. A saved person KNOWS who they were before Christ . . . and the saved person marvels at the changes God has brought about in him . . . even IF those who would judge him by his outward performance do not.

All TRUE Christians are still sinners . . . BUT they are repentant sinners AFTER they are saved.

Eternal security is absolutely NOT a license to sin. Eternal security is recognizing that sin still exists in our lives, but also that:

Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. (KJV)

TRUE Christians are NOT under the law, we are under grace!

Romans 6:14-16 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. 15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. 16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? (KJV)

My sin AND yours, continues to exist, BUT it no longer has dominion over us. I can approach His Throne of Grace and seek His Face and pray with confidence. (Rom.5:1-2).

The enemy (Satan and opponents of Eternal Security) shall TRY to convince us that we are unworthy because of our sin. Do NOT listen to them! Our sin was overcome by BELIEF and we are forgiven by grace through faith.

Romans 8:33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. (KJV)

SALVATION comes by repentance for sin and faith in the completed work of the Cross as a substitutionary and all-sufficient sacrifice for sin. Works of faith can come only AFTER that faith has been made alive by salvation.

The Biblical doctrine of Eternal Security is NOT a license to sin . . . it is a recognition that sin exists, and that Jesus Christ alone has defeated sin's eternal consequences.

Acts 3:19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; (KJV)

Salvation is a VERY personal matter between each individual and Christ Jesus. Repentance CANNOT be falsified . . . a person KNOWS in one's heart whether they have repented or not . . . and for certain, Almighty God KNOWS! Believe God and trust Jesus to save you.
