What does the Bible say about Purgatory?
BUT . . .according to the Catholic Encyclopedia: Purgatory is a place or condition of temporal punishment for those who, departing this life in God's grace, are not entirely free from venial faults, or have not fully paid the satisfaction due to their transgressions.
To summarize this, Purgatory is a place that a supposed Christian’s soul goes to after death to be cleansed of the sins that had not been fully satisfied during life.
Does this doctrine of Purgatory agree with the Bible? ABSOLUTELY NOT! NO way!
Jesus died to pay the penalty for ALL of our sins.
Romans 5:8-9 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. (KJV) . . . There is NO need for any supposed purgatory! We are justified (declared NOT guilty in the courts of Heaven), by the precious Blood of Jesus!
Romans 3:24-25 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; (KJV) . . . AGAIN . . . justified! Jesus paid our sin debt for us, redeeming us from Hell and any supposed purgatory.
Col. 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: (KJV) . . . In whom we have redemption through his blood . . . (Eph.1:7; 1 Pet.1:18-19) Jesus (NOT Mary) has paid the redemption price, with His own Blood, so our sins might be cancelled, and we could be made fit to be partakers of the inheritance among the saints in light. Thank You Jesus! Even the forgiveness of sins . . . JESUS took away our sins, plus all the power, guilt and infection of sin, forever, all sin of every kind, with all its influence and consequences.
1 Tim. 2:6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. (KJV) . . . ransom means a redemption price. Ransom is the penalty of sin that Jesus paid for you and for me on the cross! He paid a debt He did not owe, because we had a debt we could not pay. He redeemed us from HELL! Jesus paid a high price for our redemption. We were lost sinners, and He was the Ransom. We human beings are separated from God by sin and we must have a Saviour. We need a way across the abyss of sin and eternal death and back to God. Only ONE Person in the entire Universe is our Mediator and can stand between us and God and bring us together again . . . Jesus, who is both God and Man. Jesus' Sacrifice brought new life to all people. Have you let him bridge the gap between you and God?
Jesus is the Sum and Substance of what is before said is the Gospel, which is a testimony that concerns the Person, office and grace of Christ Jesus, displayed in the times of the Messiah, or the Gospel dispensation.
Hebrews 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. (KJV) . . . the Israelite priests went in continually, with the blood of goats and calves. All they got was a temporary solution. Only Christ Jesus went in ONCE and just that ONE time, and when He did,
Having obtained eternal redemption . . . the importance is upon the contrast that Christ entered ONCE into the Holy Place and obtained eternal redemption, whereas the priests went in daily, year after year and never did accomplish what Jesus did!
Here the redemption of man is attributed to the Blood of Christ; and this precious Blood is stated to be shed in a sacrificial way, precisely as the blood of bulls, goats and calves was shed under the law. Once for all . . . in direct opposition to the annual entering of the high priest into the holiest, with the blood of the annual victim. The holy place or sanctuary, means Heaven, into which Jesus entered into with His own Blood, as the high priest entered into the holy of holies with the blood of the victims which he had sacrificed. Eternal redemption is a redemption price which would stand good for ever, when once offered; and an endless redemption from sin, in reference to the pardon, which reconciles us to God (Rom.5:1-2). There is NO more need of other sacrifice! The Perfect Sacrifice of Jesus is eternal in its merit and effectiveness. (Eph.5:2).
Does it seem to you that purgatory is needed? Jesus paid it all! After we die, we go directly into the Presence of God! 2 Cor. 5:8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. (KJV)
Consider another Passage too: Ecc. 12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. (KJV) . . . Does this say the soul, the spirit goes to purgatory? It does NOT! There is NO purgatory in the Bible!
2 Peter 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. (KJV) . . . Purgatory is a damnable heresy!
Isaiah 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. (KJV)
1 Peter 2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. (KJV) . . . By whose stripes ye were healed . . . Healed of what? I notice that when so-called faith healers use the words, "by whose stripes ye were healed," they refer to Isaiah 53:5 rather than to this verse in 1 Peter, because Peter makes it quite clear that the healing is of sins, NOT physical ailments! YES! The Lord Jesus came to be our Great Healer . . . the Great Healer of SINS! No human physician can handle that problem. And Peter's use of these words from Isaiah 53:5 reveals that the prophet Isaiah was NOT speaking of physical healing but of that which is MUCH more important and MUCH more profound, healing from SIN!
SO . . . IF Jesus heals us of our sins, and God remembers them no more (Heb.8:12; 10:17), and our sins are removed as far as the east is to the west (Ps.103:12), and our sins are cast into the depths of the deepest sea (Mic.7:19) . . . HOW could this supposed purgatory help anyone? God is NOT the Author of confusion (1 Cor.14:33). IF purgatory existed, wouldn’t this be utter confusion, after reading the above verses? There is NO purgatory!
1 John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. (KJV) . . . “Propitiation” is a big word. It means atonement. Christ Jesus is the atoning Sacrifice for our sins. He removed God’s wrath from us. Why was God so angry? Because of our sins. God cannot, nor will NOT tolerate sin of any kind. He is completely holy, pure and righteous. If we do not know Jesus as Saviour and Lord, we are God’s enemy (Ro.5:9-10; Jam.4:4) but once we accept Jesus, and His Work on the Cross, we are God’s friends and His children (John 1:12-13; 3:3-8). Jesus suffered OUR penalty on that Cross. He paid in full, the sin debt we owed, one that we could never have paid! Jesus conciliated, won over, soothed God’s anger toward us, pacified God’s wrath against us when He died that sacrificial death on the Cross. Only Jesus can keep us out of Hell! (Jn.14:6; Acts 4:12). His mother, Mary CANNOT!
1 Cor. 3:12-15 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; 13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. 14 If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. 15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. (KJV) . . . Each and every person who has ever lived, shall one day stand before Judge Jesus on Judgment Day. Rev. 20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. (KJV) . . . Do you SEE what this says? On Judgment Day, the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them! This really stresses that ALL the dead shall be brought forward to the Great White Throne! Don’t you think that IF there really were a purgatory, it would say something here? There is NO purgatory in the Bible!
The main Scriptural Passage Catholics point to for evidence of purgatory is: 1 Cor. 3:15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. (KJV) . . . The Passage (1 Cor.3:12-15) above, is using an image of things going through fire as a describing believers’ works being judged. If our works are of good quality gold, sliver, costly stones, they will pass through the fire unharmed, and we will be rewarded for them. If our works are of poor quality wood, hay, and straw, they will be consumed by the fire, and there will be no reward. Please note: The Passage does NOT say that believers pass through the fire, but rather that a believer’s works pass through the fire. And this Passage refers to the believer escaping through the flames, NOT the believer being cleansed by the flames.
Purgatory, like most of the other Catholic doctrines, is based on a gross misunderstanding of the nature of Christ’s Sacrifice. Catholics look at the Mass/Eucharist as a re-presentation of Christ’s Sacrifice because they do NOT understand that Jesus’ once-for-all sacrifice was absolutely and perfectly sufficient (Heb.7:27). Catholics see meritorious works as helping to salvation. They simply do NOT understand that Jesus’ once-for all sacrificial payment has absolutely NO need whatsoever of any additional contribution (Eph.2:8-9). In fact to think and believe and try to do something to gain salvation, is in a way is blasphemy, disrespect, irreverence, mockery and ridicule! It is in fact, calling God a “liar.” 1 John 5:10-13 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. 13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. (KJV) . . . I think that Catholics need to sit down and read the Bible!
Purgatory is understood by Catholics as a place of cleansing in preparation for Heaven because they do not recognize that because of Jesus’ Sacrifice, we are already cleansed, declared righteous, forgiven, redeemed, reconciled, and sanctified. What a tremendous Saviour we have! Thank You Jesus!
