COMPROMISE . . . The Path to Destruction
“No one will ever know.” “One time won’t hurt.” “Everyone is doing it.”
Have you ever said any of these things, or something like them? I think that every one of us has been faced with the devil’s tempting us to compromise. I do not mean the healthy give-and-take compromise (cooperation, concession) that is a very important part of any close relationship. I mean the kind of compromise that can cause us to forsake or reject God’s laws and guidelines, something that would leave us morally and spiritually ruined. IF we ever give in to this kind of compromise, our attitude of obedience would give way to a dangerous, defiant disobedience and our thinking that we did not need God.
Any time that we are faced with the devil’s temptations to make dangerous choices, we must be wise enough to consider what those who have suffered as a result of compromise. What about King Solomon? This man puzzles me! He had more wisdom and riches than any other king.
1 Kings 10:23-24 So king Solomon exceeded all the kings of the earth for riches and for wisdom. 24 And all the earth sought to Solomon, to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart. (KJV) . . . Why did Solomon deliberately disobey God’s warnings?
Deut. 7:3 Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son. (KJV)
Solomon took “seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines” (1 Ki.11:3). And in the due course of time, “when Solomon was old … his wives turned his heart away after other gods” (1 Ki.11:4-8).
I think that giving in to one temptation, gives way for our giving in to more and more and more. Satan is strong indeed! BEWARE!!! God was very angry with Solomon! 1 Kings 11:9-12 And the LORD was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned from the LORD God of Israel, which had appeared unto him twice, 10 And had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods: but he kept not that which the LORD commanded. 11 Wherefore the LORD said unto Solomon, Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded thee, I will surely rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant. 12 Notwithstanding in thy days I will not do it for David thy father's sake: but I will rend it out of the hand of thy son. (KJV)
Deut. 17:16 But he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses: forasmuch as the LORD hath said unto you, Ye shall henceforth return no more that way. (KJV) . . . He multiplied horses (2 Chron.9:25,28). The descent of Solomon started with ONE single thought. That is always where compromise begins. What began as a thought in Solomon’s mind exploded into utter tragedy. It began with a look here, a gaze there . . . and before long, he was totally trapped. Finally, he abandoned himself completely to disobedience. This did NOT happen overnight. Compromise is usually very subtle at first, with each step of the way becoming easier, until soon, we forget where we began.
It is absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to compromise without giving up something. But . . . is what I receive . . . equal to what I give up? So . . . What do we give up when we compromise? We give up some spiritual treasures: purity, goodness, honesty, honor, integrity, morality, righteousness, virtue, our belief in the Word of God. Satan will whisper to us all, just as he did to Solomon, “No one is perfect. Everyone has to give up on something to make it in this life.”
I do not think that anyone doubts that we are called upon to give up certain things in life, but Satan suggests to us that there are no boundaries, and that whatever he prods us to give up will lead to greater freedom, happiness and peace. He LIES! That is NOT true.
Is there anything we can learn from Solomon’s experience? Yes! Two very important things:
First, compromise is costly.
Any time that you compromise, it is admitting that you are willing to give up something that is valuable to you. People compromise things that they would have once died to keep. Politicians promise one thing and vote the opposite way once they were in office. People who compromise their values to gain popularity, win influence, or obtain finances sacrifice their self-respect and the trust of their peers. Politicians who forfeited their principles to gain political power find success fickle when longtime friends finally become aware of their actions.
There is a high cost of compromise. Satan has NOT changed. Just think of young men and women who compromise their sexual purity. The price for such decisions has always been too high, with millions of babies being born out of wedlock. Today there is an added cost of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. What once resulted in a pregnancy, lost dreams, and broken lives can kill a person today. That’s a pretty high price for compromise.
Second, not only is compromise costly, but compromise also corrupts.
King Solomon went from worshipping the one true God to worshipping idols. The goddess Ashtoreth had worshippers who practiced animal and human sacrifices. As part of their rituals, they threw babies into the fire. They engaged in male and female prostitution. Solomon KNEW that was WRONG! But, he became so utterly corrupted that God began to diminish his wisdom. Finally, God told Solomon: 1 Kings 11:11 Wherefore the LORD said unto Solomon, Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded thee, I will surely rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant. (KJV) . . . God said that He would rip the kingdom from Solomon’s hands because of his compromising. God knows how to get people’s attention.
Compromise is costly. It corrupts. It brings collapse. If you have been considering compromise, remember that with Solomon it started with ONE single thought. BEWARE!!!
Maybe you have jumped headfirst into whatever it is you have been desiring. Dear one, it is NEVER too late to turn back to the Father in Heaven.
As long as we live in this fallen world, the devil will be there tempting us. If Satan can get you to give up what is important to you, he has started a process that could cost you dearly. That is a fact. Please consider the cost, BEFORE you dive in! You serve the Almighty God who created all that is good. His limitless power is your only defense against the enemy’s deceptive and destructive schemes. Hold fast to the truth, stand firm with Jesus, and He shall strengthen you against compromise, and you will escape its destructive force.
