What is a Carnal Christian?

Can a TRUE Christian be carnal? First, we must know what carnal means.
1 Cor. 3:1-3  And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. 2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. 3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? (KJV) . . .

The word carnal means fleshly, of the flesh. This striking word is seen in the context of Christians in this Passage, and the apostle Paul is addressing the readers as brethren, a term he uses almost exclusively to refer to other Christians. He then goes on to describe them as carnal. Therefore, we can conclude that Christians can be carnal. The Bible is absolutely clear that no one is sinless (Rom.3:10;23; 1 Jn.1:7-8). Every time we sin, we are acting carnally (of the flesh) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . http://www.hisservants.org/alternative_lifestyles_h_s.htm

The main thing to understand is that while a Christian can be, for a time carnal, but a TRUE Christian will NOT stay carnal for a lifetime. Some false teachers have abused the idea of a carnal Christian by saying that it is possible for people to come to faith in Christ . . . and then proceed to live the rest of their lives in a completely carnal manner, with no evidence of being born again or a new creation (2 Cor.5:17). This is completely unbiblical. James chapter 2 makes it very clear that sincere faith will always result in good works. And Eph.2:8-10 declares that while we are saved by grace through faith alone, that salvation will result in works. Christians can, in a time of failure and/or rebellion, appear to be carnal. But, will a TRUE Christian stay carnal? NO! Absolutely not. They CANNOT! 1John 3:9  Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. (KJV)

Eternal security is a FACT of Scripture, and I believe even the carnal Christian is still saved . . . IF they were really sincere about their commitment to Jesus. I believe that salvation CANNOT be lost, because salvation is a gift of God that He will not take away. I think the following Scriptures prove that I am right.
John 10:28-29 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. (KJV)
John 20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. (KJV) . . . Life = eternal life!
Romans 8:37-39  Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (KJV)
1 John 5:10-13 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. 13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. (KJV)

I know of two young people who were saved, but went astray. They backslid really bad. One girl married, got caught up in drugs, ended up a prostitute in truck stops. She was found dead in the sleeper cab of a big rig, when the truck caught fire and burned up.
Another young man joined a motorcycle gang. His mother begged and begged him to stop his sinfulness. She finally went to God in prayer and asked God to either straighten him up, or take him home. He died in a crash that very night.
I really do believe that these two carnal Christians shall be in Heaven one day. 1 Cor.3:15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. (KJV) . . . I really do think that the question is NOT whether a person who claims to be a Christian but lives carnally has lost his salvation, but instead  . . . Was that person truly saved in the first place. 1 John 2:19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us. (KJV)

Christians who become carnal (sinful) in their behavior can expect God to lovingly discipline them, so they can be restored to close fellowship with Christ and be taught to obey Him.
Hebrews 12:5-11 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: 6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. 7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? 8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. 9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? 10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. 11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. (KJV)

God’s desire in saving us is that we would progressively grow closer to the image of Christ, becoming increasingly spiritual and decreasingly carnal, a process known as sanctification. Until we are delivered from our sinful flesh, there will be outbreaks of carnality. For a TRUE believer in Christ, these occurrences of carnality will be the exception, NOT the rule. Romans 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (KJV)

Again, I say, I really think that the question is NOT whether a person who claims to be a Christian but lives carnally has lost his salvation, but instead  . . . Was that person truly saved in the first place. IF the person was NOT really saved, their destination is Hell!
Ezekiel 18:4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die. (KJV) . . . All souls without Christ shall die eternally!
Ezekiel 18:20
The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. (KJV) . . . All souls without Christ shall die eternally!
John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
(KJV)
John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. (KJV)
John 8:24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. (KJV)
Matthew 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: (KJV)
Mat.25:46  And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. (KJV)
Rev. 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. (KJV)
