What is the unpardonable sin? Is there such a thing?
The unpardonable sin is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 12:31-32 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. (KJV)
Mark 3:22-30 And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils. 23 And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan? 24 And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26 And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end. 27 No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house. 28 Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme: 29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation: 30 Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit. (KJV)
Blasphemy may be described as defiant (disobedient, rebellious) irreverence. We can think of it as cursing God or willfully disrespecting things concerning Him. It also attributes evil to God, or denying Him good that we should attribute to Him. Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is a whole ‘nother thing! It is a specific sin against the Holy Spirit! The Pharisees, had seen unquestionable proof that Jesus was working miracles in the power of the Holy Spirit, yet they claimed that He was possessed by the demon Beelzebub. Matthew 12:24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils. (KJV) . . . The Lord Jesus is very specific about what exactly they did to commit the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. The unpardonable sin then, was accusing Jesus Christ (in Person, while on Earth) of being demon-possessed. This specific unpardonable sin against the Holy Spirit cannot be duplicated today, because Jesus is no longer present bodily on Earth.
The only unpardonable sin today is that of continued, disobedient and rebellious unbelief. There is NO pardon from God for any person who dies in unbelief.
John 3:15-16 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (KJV)
John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. (KJV)
1 John 5:10-12 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. (KJV)
The ONLY condition in which someone would have NO forgiveness from God is IF the person is NOT among the whosoever that believes in Him. The Holy Spirit works continually in the lives of people, trying to get them to believe God and accept Jesus as their Saviour and Lord. When a person refuses to do this, they are in fact calling God a LIAR! (1 Jn.5:10). No wonder God gets angry!
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (KJV)
Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. (KJV)
NO one cometh unto the Father, goes to Heaven (where God is), without Jesus! When a person rejects Jesus, the ONLY Way of salvation, they condemn them self to an eternity in Hell, because they reject the only pardon there is, and THAT is clearly, unpardonable.
Many people have fears they have committed some horrible sin that God cannot or will not forgive. They think there is no hope for them. Satan loves this! He would like nothing better than to keep us agonizing under this falsehood. The truth is, if a person has this fear, he needs only to come before God, confess that sin, repent of it, and accept God’s Promise of forgiveness. 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (KJV) . . . God assures us that He is ready to forgive ANY sin . . . no matter how terrible . . . IF we sincerely come to Him in repentance. My dear friend, God’s grace is greater than the greatest sin . . . except UNBELIEF!
It is my humble opinion, that a TRUE Christian CANNOT commit the unpardonable sin.
Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. (KJV) . . . Only an UNBELIEVER can commit the unpardonable sin, and millions do. Please remember that as true believers, we do NOT go to a priest (a sinner), to forgive our sins. ONLY God can forgive sin! 1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; (KJV)
Again, I do not think this particular sin is possible today because Jesus is no longer on Earth in bodily form, performing miracles through the Holy Spirit. But, I do think that there is an "unpardonable" sin that CAN be, and IS committed in today’s world. It is resisting the Holy Spirit by way of denying the deity of Christ, denying that He is God; resisting Him in the Gospel; knowingly and willfully committing sin (not believing God) . . . to name a few. It is a disrespectful and hateful way to use the Spirit of grace, by opposing, contradicting and denying the things done by Him, and the doctrines revealed by Him. It goes against a man's own light and conscience, out of willful and stubborn hatred and malice.
