How to Respond to Temptation Wisely

1 Cor. 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. (KJV)

Most people try to resist temptation, but in the end, most give in, saying that they are only human. When giving in to temptation, their sin brings a heavy burden of guilt and shame, binging of their confessing their weakness and promise the Lord they will improve. But, this cycle seems to keep repeating, time and time again. What can a believer do to learn to resist temptation and its appeal.

What is the characteristic of temptation?
#1. It seduces us to take our God-given desires beyond their proper limits. We may be seeking something the Lord does not want for us, or trying to have it before He wants us to have it, or we may try get it in a wrong way.
#2.     There are three sources of temptation, and the devil is behind them all! 1 John 2:16  For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. (KJV)

  1. Lust of the flesh. This lust is gratifying your physical desires: food, alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, sex, etc. James 1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. (KJV)
  2. Lust of the eyes. This lust is craving and accumulating things: cars, jewelry, real estate, anything that the Jones’ have; greed, greed, greed.
  3. The pride of life. This too is in reality, a lust. This lust is being obsessed with your status and/or importance or power or fame.

Eve was tempted in the Garden in these three areas (Gen.3:6), just as Jesus was in the wilderness (Mat.4:1-11). We must NOT be like Eve and give in to temptation, but instead we must be like Jesus and resist the devil (with His help).
This evil world system in which we live, play right into the hands of Satan! Ads entice us to spend money on unhealthy things: booze, cigarettes, food loaded with fat and sugar, etc., skimpy, revealing clothing, leading to immorality, etc., it is rare today that TV and movies do not have immoral bed scenes, and bloody, gruesome violence. This is NOT Godly! This shall one day be judged, and the sentence shall be HELL! Mat. 25:46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. (KJV) . . . Where are YOU going?
Rev. 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. (KJV) . . . Is YOUR name in this book?

Temptation is common and universal

1 Cor. 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. (KJV)

Temptation has always attracted, starting with Adam and Eve, or we would not be so easily drawn to it. In actual fact, it is an enticement, a seduction to evil. Satan's main purpose for tempting us is to sidetrack us from our relationship with the Lord Jesus. When a believer focuses on ungodly things, our prayer life is drastically hindered, and there is NO way we can adequately understand the Bible, because we are quenching the Spirit (1 Thes.5:19), within us.

Temptation is NOT the same as a trial. A temptation encourages us to commit some evil or to disobey God. A trial is a time of difficulty or hardship in a person's life. But, beware! Satan wants to use both of these to destroy us. We must remember that the Lord allows temptation and trial to strengthen our faith and teach us to depend on Him.

Christians often believe myths about temptation, including:
#1.     That temptation itself is a sin, which is NOT true. Sin happens ONLY if we act on the temptation.
#2.     Believers can fall into temptation. The Holy Spirit provides us with the power to resist sin. Because of this, in order to transgress, Christians must deliberately and willingly step into temptation.
#3.     It is always best to RUN away from temptation. This is true sometimes. 2 Tim. 2:22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. (KJV) . . . But for situations you cannot escape, it is critical for us to learn how to RESIST temptation.

Temptation that results in sin, usually follows a common pattern:
#1.     An idea already planted in the mind.
#2.     A person dreams about fulfilling a certain desire.
#3.     The actual fact is, a person has a willful decision to sin against the Lord.
#4.     He or she makes a choice . . . they give consent to the idea of disobeying God.
#5.     Giving in is sin.

How can we respond wisely to temptation?
#1.     Focus on the big picture. IF you yield to a certain desire, how will affect your health, finances, relationships, and God's plans for you? Instead of giving in to Satan’s seduction, look for a Godly way to fulfill your longing. Instead of stealing, WORK to earn the money to buy what you want.

#2.     Remember: God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. Claim this Promise when temptation strikes.

#3.     Trust the power of the Holy Spirit. As a born-again child of God, you have the awesome power of the Spirit to reset your thinking, change your attitude, and enable you to say no. John 14:15-16 If ye love me, keep my commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; (KJV)

#4.     Col. 3:2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. (KJV) . . . In other words, be determined to live a victorious Christian life. Do not focus on desires or lusts that will pull you away from the Lord Jesus. 1 John 2:15-17 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16  For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17  And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. (KJV)

#5.     Know the areas of weakness in your life. When we know our limitations, we can be more sensitive to the guidance of the Holy Spirit in that area. So, if you have a spending problem, do NOT go to the mall just to look, or if you have an eating problem, stay away from all you can eat buffets, of if you like liquor, stay away from beer joints!

#6.     Know and understand the times of your weakness. Do not allow yourself to become too hungry, angry, lonely or tired.

#7.     Build a wall of defense around you. Read and study the Bible. Ask the Lord to build spiritual values in your life as a protection against temptation. And whatever you do . . . NEVER try to bargain with the devil! You will NOT win, EVER! Speak Biblical Truth, follow Christ's example. Luke 4:1-12 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2  Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered. 3  And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. 4  And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. 5  And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6  And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. 7  If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. 8  And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 9  And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence: 10  For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee: 11  And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 12  And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. (KJV)

Comment: Are you are tired of failing over and over again? Do you keep giving in to temptation? Is it destroying your life? My friend, without God’s help, you will NEVER be able to find freedom from sin. You must allow the Lord take charge of your life if you want victory! Only then will have the ability to resist temptation through the power, grace, and mercy of God.
