The Power to Resist Sin

Temptation should be expected and is unavoidable in this life on Earth. Because of this, we should do all we can to be prepared. The Word of God teaches that believers can stand firm against sin through the power of the Lord.

Loving Limitations

God is closely involved in the life of every believer. He does NOT expect us to bear the burden of temptation alone.
1 Cor. 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. (KJV)

#1.     Some people excuse their sin by claiming that their particular temptation is one of a kind and irresistible. NOT true! There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man.

#2.    What does this two-part Promise Paul give believers regarding temptation? He will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

In the area of temptation, many think of God and Satan are equal in power, but are opposite in nature. But, my friend, the devil is under God’s authority. God the Father promises to keep a watchful eye on all the nature and intensity of the temptations you face. Anyone who believes they are at Satan’s mercy, deny themselves victory because they just do not make a steadfast attempt to overcome temptation. This simply opens the door for all kinds of lame excuses: I can’t help it; The devil made me do it; There was no way I could say no. BUT . . . according to 1 Corinthians 10:13, EVERY temptation has an accompanying escape door. My friend, IF God shuts the door to a temptation, look aronnd, you will see an open window! Trying to run away from the situation will not always be the answer. But if you know you are going to face a particular enticement and truly want to escape it, ask God to show you what to do.

A Way Out

God’s ultimate desire is that we would face temptation but NOT give in to it.
#1.     Consider Jesus’ prayer regarding His followers’ exposure to the world, and its enticements: John 17:14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. (KJV)

#2.     Do you think there is a good reason why Christ did NOT ask the Father to shield us from all tempting situations? Absolutely YES!!! He wants us to depend more fully on God, no matter what the situation, or how bad we think it is.

God does NOT promise to rearrange our lives so that we never experience temptation, but when it comes, He provides a way out for us. Go to Him in prayer and ask Him to help you!

Power to Overcome

Romans 5:17-19 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) 18  Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. 19  For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. (KJV) . . . ALL people are sinners, they are born that way.

Psalm 58:3 The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies. (KJV)

All people have an inborn desire to rebel against our Creator and against authority. Only when we submit to God  and surrender our lives to Christ, do we have a chance against wickednes. Our attitudes and actions are controlled through the desires of the flesh . . . that which we inherited from our first parents, Adam and Eve. That is why those who have NOT trusted Jesus as Saviour do NOT have the power to consistently overcome temptation in their lives.
Eph. 6:10-11 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11  Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. (KJV) . . . You cannot put on the armor of God without Jesus!
Romans 6:1-3 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2  God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3  Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? (KJV)

Sin still exists in the life of a believer, but it no longer has the power to force the child of God to do or think anything.
Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. (KJV)
Romans 6:11-12 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. 12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. (KJV)

The power that raised Christ from the dead is available to us every day. Romans 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. (KJV) . . . The Holy Spirit abides within you!

Romans 8:11-13 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. 12  Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. 13  For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. (KJV) . . . If you have received Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord, you can say NO to your sinful desires. You are dead to sin and alive to God.
