Preventing Spiritual Drifting (Backsliding)
No one plans to backslide. Sometimes, people do not even realize they are moving away from that close relationship with the Lord until they get all tangled up in sin. HOW can we avoid doing this? By intentionally staying ON track spiritually.
Grief of suffering should not embitter your relationship with God. Many people turn away from God when they feel He let them down, did not answer their prayers, or that He allowed extreme discomfort and pain. God NEVER promised that He would answer every prayer, in the way we expect, but He certainly wants to give us hope in each situation. Is there a way that you can stay close to the Lord in hard times? YES! Tell God exactly how you feel. He already knows, but He wants you to talk to him about your troubles. Only by being honest with Him can you receive all the comfort He has for you.
The Bible is full of examples of God's people pouring their hearts out to Him. Open your Bible and read how Jeremiah the prophet fully expressed his discouragement in Lamentations 3:1-18, and how Jeremiah encouraged himself in: Lamentations 3:21-25 This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. 22 It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. 24 The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him. 25 The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. (KJV)
Search for encouraging Scriptures
Instead of thinking how discouraged you are, or how bad things are, focus on the great spiritual Truths found in the Bible. Do you think that you are the only one who is going through hard times? NO!!! May I suggest that you find encouraging and uplifting verses. Before you begin, ask God to have His Spirit help you. Then . . . read until you find something that speaks to your problem. If you do not know where to start, the Book of Psalms is terrific! One of my favorite Passages in the Bible is: Psalm 73:23 Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand. 24 Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. 25 Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. 26 My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever. (KJV)

Always remember that God can bring something good out of every heartache: Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. (KJV) . . . When we are in the middle of a hardship, it is difficult to trust that God has our ultimate good in mind . . . but, He does! The pain may not be good, but it is nothing like Jesus suffered for us! And even in our darkest hour, He can bring spiritual good out of it. Every hardship we endure and come out on top, strengthens us for the next one that may come. Trust the Lord to keep His Word to us. I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
(Heb.13:5). Do NOT ever forget this Promise! Claim it for yourself! It has brought me through some very treacherous situations.
The KEY to resisting sin is NOT just to try harder in our own strength. It will not work. You will FAIL! Sometimes, this actually increases the temptation to sin. SO . . . HOW can we resist temptation God's way?
#1. Concentrate on Scripture. The Word of God has tremendous power to help us resist sin.
Psalm 119:9-11 Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. 10 With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. 11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. (KJV) . . . This is one major benefit of learning and memorizing Scripture! Do not focus only on Scriptures that condemn your vice. Meditate on verses that talk about how God fulfills us with good things when we trust in Him: Psalm 84:11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. (KJV) . . . What does the Psalmist say about encouragement? Psalm 16:11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. (KJV)
#2. Avoid tempting situations if possible. King David fell into temptation of adultery because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Where should he have been that spring?
2 Samuel 11:1 And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem. (KJV)
We will never be able to avoid ALL temptation, but my friend, we can use our God-given common sense to avoid many tempting situations: if you cannot eat candy in moderation, do NOT keep it in the house; if you cannot say no to alcohol, stay out of beer joints; if watching R-rated movies tempts you to lust, watch other movies; if you have a hot temper, learn to walk away from what may become a fight; etc. You can control many situations if you so desire!
#3. Trust God to deliver you from temptation. A TRUE believer is not alone when temptation strikes . . . and it will! Satan will NOT give up hope of trying to make you go back to his side. Ephesians 2:1-9 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: 3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) 6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: 7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. (KJV) . . . You do NOT need to give in to temptation! The Spirit of Christ is within a TRUE believer, to empower you to resist the devil!
Romans 8:9-11 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. (KJV) . . . With the help of the Holy Spirit, you CAN resist whatever Satan throws your way! Trust Him!
How Can you RESIST Temptation?
The Bible tells us: James 4:7-8 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. (KJV) . . . The Bible will NEVER lead you astray!
Preventing backsliding is not always easy, but there is an answer. We must turn to God for help, in times of deepest hardship, loss, pain, sickness and suffering of any kind, learning to rely on His strength to avoid temptation.
Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
To walk in the Spirit is to obey the initial promptings of the Spirit. (KJV) . . . To walk in the Spirit means to turn to Him for daily guidance on how to live or what decision to make? The Bible tells us that the only Guide worth trusting is the Holy Spirit. He is the only One who knows us completely, from the moment we were conceived, to the present moment. And He also knows our future, from this day to eternity. He knows God’s plan and purpose for us today and for each day of our lives. He also knows what is good and right for us. He is there for us! He wants only the best for us!
Does God the Father place any conditions on the guidance of the Holy Spirit in our lives? Yes!
#1. We must stay yielded to the Spirit, we must NOT quench Him (1 Thes.5:19).
#2. We must say yes to the Spirit when He prompts us to take action or say a certain word.
#3. We must obey His prompting and do or say what He has told us.
The Spirit most often speaks to us in the stillness of our hearts with a word of conviction or assurance. When the Holy Spirit directs us away from something harmful, we often feel a heaviness, a feeling of trouble, a forewarning or uneasiness in our spirit. When the Holy Spirit directs us toward helpful things, we tend to have a deep inner peace, an eagerness to see what God will do, and a feeling of joy. Elijah felt and heard God’s still small voice. 1 Kings 19:11-12 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: 12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. (KJV)
We must believe and obey His guidance. We are much more likely to hear what the Holy Spirit has to say IF we are whole-heartedly listening for Him to speak. We are much more likely to see the Holy Spirit’s direction if we are looking for Him to guide us. God is a definitely a Rewarder of those who seek Him. Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (KJV)
The Holy Spirit was sent to reveal the Truth to us (Jn.14:16,26). He has come in His all-knowing ability to convey to us what we need to know in order to live faithful and obedient lives. Trust Him to guide you, now and always!
