Guarding Against Temptation
All temptation begins with just one tiny thought. We do have the ability to choose to ignore tempting thoughts, OR allow them to remain in our minds. It is NOT easy, but you CAN do it! If lustful thoughts are not kept in check, our temptations can lead to bad things: disappointment, discontent, displeasure, dissatisfaction, failure, rejection, separation, unhappiness, etc. The apostle Paul wisely instructed the Corinthians: 2 Cor. 10:5-6 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; 6 And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled. (KJV) . . . Because of the Presence of the Holy Spirit within us (Rom.8:9-11), we are able to screen, select, admit and nurture what goes on in our minds. By His Holy and awesome power, we can prevent our minds from going the wrong way and drifting into evil . . . but we must choose to focus only on what is Godly and good.
Phil. 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. (KJV) . . . This verse is the biography of Jesus! We would be very wise to follow this!
Through Christ, we do have the ability to CHOOSE what to accept into our mind. While we have no control over some things that we see or hear, we do control WHAT we will think about, what we observe and HOW we will act on that information.
Any time things come into our range of feeling or awareness, we must evaluate them immediately through the Word of God. If we dwell on a specific thought, we must ask ourselves, Why am I thinking this? What is at the root of my thought?
Remember, temptation is NOT a sin, BUT . . . it does seduce us to sin and disobey God. When we are tempted, we would be wise, NEVER act on ungodly impulses, desires and lusts. We CAN choose to think Godly thoughts, act according to His will, and do all things to the glory of God. 1 Cor. 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. (KJV)
