Listening to God is Critical to Walking With God.
Psalm 81:8 Hear, O my people, and I will testify unto thee: O Israel, if thou wilt hearken unto me; (KJV)
Psalm 81:11-13 But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me. 12 So I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust: and they walked in their own counsels. 13 Oh that my people had hearkened unto me, and Israel had walked in my ways! (KJV)
There are many things we must learn when we live as God’s children, and one of the most important things we can learn is to listen to God. In today’s world, things can get difficult and hectic in our lives. There is NOTHING more necessary, more urgent and more rewarding than hearing what God has to say to us. And there is NOTHING more necessary, more urgent and more rewarding and OBEYING Him.
A real conversation includes both talking and listening. Many do better with the talking part.
Sometimes we get so busy with our lives, we simply do not take time to LISTEN to what God has to say to us. Any time that we fail to listen to the Lord, we will make some very unwise and costly mistakes, because we are doing things our way, without His guidance. BEWARE!!!
Does the Lord really speak to us today? YES!!! The Bible assures us that He does. Hebrews 1:1-2 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; (KJV) . . . Our awesome God is NOT a silent God! He loves us very much and He wants us to talk to Him in prayer, but He also wants us to listen to Him, so He can make our lives a little less difficult. Our heavenly Father is alive and very active, and so is His only begotten Son, and the Holy Spirit is also very much alive and active within us. He speaks to each of us individually and in a way that we can hear Him, receive His message, and obey Him. He is infinite, fully capable of communicating with each of us, right where we are . . . in the midst of our circumstances, and in a very personal way. Indwelling of the Holy Spirit: (Jn.14:17; Rom.8:9-11; 1 Cor.3:16-17; 6:19. 2 Cor.6:16; 1 Jn.2:27).
When the Lord speaks, He is speaking to you. The Holy Bible contains His Truth; so you must take it personally and seriously. You must allow His Holy Spirit to open your heart so you will have a deeper understanding of Scripture. When you do, you can start to claim His many Promises for your life. You also will gain a deeper understanding of His provision, His care and His love.
God is VERY serious about His relationship with you. He speaks to you for your benefit, and it is VERY important for you to listen to Him and VERY important for you to respond to Him in obedience.
There may be times that He will bring some kind of trial to challenge you to change your thinking or to cast off certain unhealthy feelings and opinions. And sometimes He will touch your heart, to change certain parts of your behavior. But my friend, with every instruction He gives, you can be assured it is for your good. His desire is to encourage you, and help you grow spiritually, so that your life might greater joy and strength, and increase your faith at the same time. He also wants to transform you into the likeness of His Son, Jesus Christ . . . helping you to become the very best you can be.
Learning to listen to God when you read His Word is the most important thing you can do because there is no other way to enjoy the amazingly wonderful abundant life that He offers to you. Therefore, pay close attention to what He has to say, and whatever you do, do NOT quench the Holy Spirit (1 Thes.5:19). Let Him work freely in your life, and you shall be blessed! Jeremiah 33:3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not. (KJV)
