Our God of Promise
Hebrews 10:23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) (KJV)
A promise is only as good as the one who makes it. The sovereign and Almighty God of the Universe has NEVER failed to keep His Word. For us to understand just how important the Lord’s faithfulness is, we must know that the Christian life totally depends on His Promises. My friend, the only reason we are sure that we have eternal life, a home in heaven, and resurrection bodies awaiting us is because Jesus promised these things to His followers.
Two Types of Promises
A promise is a spoken or written pledge to perform a certain act, or to not do something. In the Bible, there are two kinds of promises:
*****Unconditional . . . this is a Promise with NO exceptions. The Lord’s covenant with Abraham is a great example of this. Genesis 12:1-3 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee:
2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: 3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. (KJV) . . . God promised to make him a great nation and bless all the families of Earth through him. As Abraham’s descendent, Christ Jesus fulfilled this Promise!
*****Conditional . . . this type of promise is subject to certain mandates. The offer of salvation is conditioned upon faith in Christ. Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. (KJV) . . . IF you believe . . . you are saved!
Sometimes we feel let down by God because we think He has failed to keep His word to us. The problem is our not understanding, not His faithfulness.
#1. Consider: if we want something and truly believe God will do it, does NOT mean He has promised it to us. At times we just do not understand His will.
#2. Consider: the delay or hindrance could be the result of OUR unconfessed sins, which create barriers in our relationships with the Lord.
#3. Consider: God’s Word must be considered in its entirety. We simply cannot pick certain verses and claim Promises out of their context. Many of His Promises are conditional (we must do something), and we may not meet the requirements.
God is Trustworthy
The soundness of a promise depends on the character and ability of the one who makes it. The Lord has the power to do everything He says, and the willingness to do it.
#1. Truthful, He cannot lie. Titus 1:2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; (KJV) . . . Because TRUTH is the very essence of His nature, it is absolutely impossible for Him to lie. For that reason, we can believe His Promises because He always tells the truth.
#2. Faithful; we can trust Him. Heb. 10:23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) (KJV) . . . Should the Lord ever break a Promise, our faith would fall apart because He would no longer be who He says He is. But since God has NEVER failed to keep His Word in the past, we know that we can trust Him now and forever!
#3. Immutable, means that God NEVER changes. Malachi 3:6 For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed. (KJV) Heb. 6:18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: (KJV) Heb. 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. (KJV) James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. (KJV)
#4. Love, His promises are always based on our best interests. The cross is the absolute proof of His love for us. Jesus died for our sins. He loved us enough to keep that Promise, we have no reason to doubt Him. John 10:11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. (KJV) John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. (KJV)
1 John 4:7-10 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. 10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. (KJV)
God is able and powerful to fulfill His Promises because He is:
#1. Omniscient, God knows every detail of every situation. Every Promise He makes is based on His infinite, perfect and complete knowledge. Heb. 4:13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. (KJV)
#2. Omnipresent, no matter what we go through, His continual Presence guarantees every Promise will be fulfilled. Heb. 13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. (KJV)
#3. Omnipotent, the Lord is completely sovereign over Heaven AND Earth, so there is nothing out of His control. Psalm 103:19 The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all. (KJV)
WHAT is Our Responsibility? Since the Lord is completely capable and faithful, we have absolute assurance that He will keep His Promises. BUT, thete are some things WE must do:
#1. Obey God. All through the Old Testament, the Lord issued conditional covenants.
Deut. 28:1 And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: 2 And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God. (KJV) . . . Verses 3-14 list the blessings IF they obeyed!
Deut. 28:15 But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee: (KJV) . . . BUT, if they did NOT obey the Lord, verses 16-68 list the curses God would bring down on them. God HATES disobedience. YES! God is also a God of hate, as this chapter proves!
My friend, if you have God for something and He has not yet provided it, you need to search your heart to see if you have failed to obey Him in some area.
#2. Believe the Lord. Faith is absolutely an indispensable requirement. Always ask yourself if you sincerely trust Him to fulfill His Word. Heb. 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (KJV) James 1:5-7 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. (KJV)
#3. Claim the Promise. If you believe the Lord will do what He says, you can confidently claim the Promise for yourself. But if you have ANY doubt, you will feel concerned and anxious even after praying about it, and His will, shall be hindered.
Since the Bible clearly tells us God is faithful and cannot lie, we should confidently say, “God said it . . . I believe it!”
