Different Stages of Our Faith
Hebrews 11:1-3 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
2 For by it the elders obtained a good report. 3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. (KJV)
Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (KJV)
Every single part of our lives is affected by our faith. It is the most important thing Jesus Christ tried to teach His disciples, and He was very disappointed when they did not show it.
Mark 16:14 Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen. (KJV)
We grow in faith through the many trials and tribulations we go through. We will most likely struggle with our faith each time, as we endure the process.
Faith Encounters Many Obstacles
#1. Human Reasoning. God may at times say things to us that do NOT seem reasonable, and we will fail to benefit from some of His blessings, because we fail to do what we are asked, because to us it does not seem right. Do NOT think you are wiser than God! You are NOT!
#2. Living by Sight. Many times we do not trust God and try to live by sight rather than by faith. 2 Cor. 5:7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) (KJV) . . . It will NOT work!
#3. Submitting to Our Feelings. When we are tested, we often feel that we simply cannot do that. This is a big problem to our faith. James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (KJV)
#4. Damaging Counsel. If God is testing you to do something, asking others for advice is a mistake. WHO is it that you know that knows more than God, or has more power than God? No person’s opinions, no matter how bright they are, should ever outweigh God’s! My friend, The Lord would NEVER ask you to do something without empowering and enabling you.
#5. Neglecting the Word of God. The Bible is food for our faith! IF you do not read it, HOW can you even begin to see how the Father enabled His people, and that He will do the same for you.
#6. Continuing on in your sin. God will NOT use you for His purposes if you refuse to give up your sin. Sin simply short-circuits your faith in every way!
#7. Satan’s Strategies. The devil wants you to doubt God, and he wants you to divide your loyalty. He is like a strong undercurrent that slowly tries to pull you away from the Lord.
The author of Hebrews states that, without faith, it is impossible to please God. When we allow anything to interfere with our standing firm in our faith, we displease God. We must trust Him if we are to advance through the stages of faith.
The Stages of Faith
#1. Little Faith. Little faith is unsure and really struggles to believe. Matthew 8:23-27 And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him. 24 And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.
25 And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish. 26 And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. 27 But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him! (KJV) . . . As the sea raged outside, Jesus was asleep inside the boat. The disciples woke Him saying, Lord, save us: we perish.
Mark 9:17-24 And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit; 18 And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not. 19 He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me. 20 And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming. 21 And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child. 22 And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. 23 Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. 24 And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief. (KJV) . . . They were focused on their circumstances rather than trusting in the Son of God who travelled with them. The father who brought his epileptic son to Jesus for healing also had little faith. He cried out asking God to help with his disbelief, and his son was immediately healed.
#2. Great Faith. This faith is maturing faith that is becoming stronger and standing on the Truth of the Word of God. David displayed great faith when he fought Goliath. His focus was on God, not how big his opponent was. 1 Samuel 17:26 And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God? (KJV)
The centurion who asked Jesus to heal his servant knew Jesus was a man under authority who could do whatever God desired simply with a word. Matthew 8:5-10 And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, 6 And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. 7 And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. 8 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. 9 For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. 10 When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. (KJV)
The Canaanite woman who pleaded with Jesus to heal her demon-possessed daughter revealed persistence in prayer. Jesus tested her, saw her faith was great, and healed her child. Matthew 15:21-28 Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon. 22 And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. 23 But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us. 24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 25 Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. 26 But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs. 27 And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table. 28 Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour. (KJV)
A woman suffering from hemorrhages felt that just touching the hem of Jesus’ garment, would heal her. Her faith made her well. She focused on Him, not her illness or how people might judge her. Matthew 9:20-22 And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: 21 For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. 22 But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour. (KJV)
#3. Perfect Faith. This is a mature, comforting faith that trusts that God has already addressed his concern. It is built on hope, expectation and joy instead of struggles and doubt.
Abraham showed perfect faith through his willingness to trust God and sacrifice Isaac. Genesis 22:1-5 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. 2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. 3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him. 4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.
5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you. (KJV) . . . It reveals that he trusted in God to keep His word and protect the son He had promised.
Perfect faith is NOT an overnight thing! We can achieve it IF and WHEN we keep our focus on God, no matter what challenges come before us.
If your faith is a struggling one, keep trusting God. If your faith is one that reaches for the hem of Jesus’ garment, keep trusting God. Stay in the Word of God! If you keep your focus on God, read His Word, and approach His throne of grace in prayer with a clean heart, and are willing to surrender your life to Him, you will soon be walking in perfect faith.
