God's Promises to the Righteous
Psalm 5:12 For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield. [KJV] . . . The LORD surrounds the righteous with a shield of love.
Psalm 11:7 For the righteous LORD loveth righteousness; his countenance doth behold the upright. [KJV] . . . Because the LORD is completely righteous, He loves those who are righteous and obey Him. He watches closely those who do what is right.
Psalm 14:5 There were they in great fear: for God is in the generation of the righteous. [KJV] . . . God is always with those who are righteous.
Psalm 31:18 Let the lying lips be put to silence; which speak grievous things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous. [KJV] . . . One day, all lying lips shall be silenced. All the proud and arrogant lips that accuse God's children shall be utterly stopped.
Psalm 34:15 The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry. [KJV] . . . The eyes of the LORD watch over all those who do what is right, and He hears their cries for help.
Psalm 34:17-18 The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. [KJV] . . . Any person who humbles themselves before God and repents (are sorry and turn from their sin) are objects of God's special tender care (Ps.51:19; Isa.57:15).
Psalm 34:19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all. [KJV] . . . So many people believe that once a person believes God and accepts Christ to save them, all their troubles are over. That is absolutely false. The righteous person has many troubles, probably more than before . . . because Satan is NOT happy about that person's decision to trust God. Satan hates God, and he wants YOU to hate God too! Please do NOT turn your back on God again! If you trust Him, He can give you peace that you never had before! No matter what kind of trouble or affliction that comes your way, the Lord will be there for you. It is a Promise! "I will never leave you, nor forsake you" (Heb.13:5). He may not remove your trouble . . . but He will walk with you through them. What a blessing that is! Take it from someone who knows first-hand!
Psalm 37:25 I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread. [KJV] . . . God will NOT forsake a righteous person, nor will any children of the righteous have to beg for food. God is pleased with, and honors ALL people who fear (reverence) Him.
Psalm 37:29 The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever. [KJV] . . . I think this is to be interpreted spiritually, and refers to our eternal dwelling with God in His glorious Home (Heaven). Thank You Jesus!
Psalm 37:30 The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment. [KJV] . . . The righteous are described as to the parts or ingredients of their character: thoughts, words, and actions. Foolish and corrupt conversation CANNOT, MUST NOT come from their mouth, NOR blasphemy in any way. The righteous are taught of God, and they must speak with the wisdom that is from above.
Psalm 37:39 But the salvation of the righteous is of the LORD: he is their strength in the time of trouble. [KJV] . . . The LORD saves those who believe Him (1 John 5:10-12). He is like a fortress where we can run in times of trouble.
Psalm 55:22 Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved. [KJV] . . . No matter your burden, no matter your trouble, take it to the Lord! A big problem of many people is that when they take their problem to Him, they have a tendency to grab it back (me included). We need to take it to Him and LEAVE it there! He is well able to bear both you and your burden (Mat.11:29-30). What a wondrous Promise to a tempted and afflicted soul! A righteous person who trusts in God and depends upon Him, will never be shaken.
Psalm 58:11 So that a man shall say, Verily there is a reward for the righteous: verily he is a God that judgeth in the earth. [KJV] . . . There really is a reward for those who live a righteous life. And too, there really is a righteous God who judges here on Earth.
Psalm 64:10 The righteous shall be glad in the LORD, and shall trust in him; and all the upright in heart shall glory. [KJV] . . . God does not abandon His people to the malice of wicked men. The wicked may bring trouble to the righteous but it shall not rest there. The hostility of the wicked against the righteous will always be, but God counteracts their devices, and defends the righteous.
Psalm 68:3 But let the righteous be glad; let them rejoice before God: yea, let them exceedingly rejoice. [KJV] . . . The righteous should be glad and rejoice, for we have His awesome Presence ever with us (John 14:16).
Psalm 97:11 Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart. [KJV] . . . Light in the Bible always refers to God and good. The righteous sow light (good). Gladness and joy are on those who do right.
Psalm 118:19-23 Open to me the gates of righteousness: I will go into them, and I will praise the LORD: This gate of the LORD, into which the righteous shall enter. I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation. The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. This is the LORD'S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes. [KJV] . . . Those who saw Christ's day in the Old Testament, saw it from a great distance, and saw a great reason to praise God for the Promise. The prophecy, refers to Christ. #1. His humiliation; He is the Stone which the builders refused: they would go on in their building without Him. Rejecters of Christ are rejected by God. #2. His exaltation; He is the Chief Cornerstone in the foundation. He must, in all things, have pre-eminence. Christ's Name is Wonderful; and the redemption He wrought out is the most amazing of all God's wondrous works.
The psalmist praises God, and calls upon all to give thanks to God for the glad tidings of great joy to ALL people, that there is a Redeemer, that being Christ the Lord. In Him the covenant of grace is sure and everlasting.
Christ is the Stone the builders rejected and He is the Head of the corner (Mat.21:42). He is the Foundation of the Church (Acts 4:11; Eph.2:20; 1 Pet.2:4,7). If you reject Christ . . . God will reject you!
Psalm 140:13 Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence. [KJV] . . . Yes! The righteous shall gladly give thanks unto Thy Name, for one day they shall dwell in Thy Presence.
Psalm 146:8 The LORD openeth the eyes of the blind: the LORD raiseth them that are bowed down: the LORD loveth the righteous: [KJV] . . . The Lord opens the eyes of the blind . . . He brings us out of our dark prison, out from under the shadow of death. He opens our eyes that we may see the Light of eternity through Jesus! He removes our wretchedness, and gives us eternal life in Heaven (John 5:24). He raises those who that are bowed down through a guilt of sin and shame. God loves the righteous, and He makes us partakers of His Divine nature (1 John 3:2-3).
Proverbs 2:7 He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. [KJV] . . . What a righteous person considers treasure is NOT the same as what a wicked person (unrighteous) does. A righteous person stores up treasures in Heaven (Mat.6:19-21). A wicked person grabs what he/she can here on Earth. Big difference! God gives a treasure of good sense and wisdom to the righteous. He is their Shield and Fortress, and protects those who walk honestly, righteously.
Proverbs 2:20-21 That thou mayest walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous. For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it. [KJV] . . . The steps of righteous people stay on the narrow path with Jesus (Mat.7:13-14). Only the righteous will live in the land of rest and comfort, a Better Land, a Better Country (Heb.11:16), and there the righteous will remain. (Compare Ps.37:3,9,22,27).
Proverbs 11:30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise. [KJV] . . . Blessings to others proceed from the works of the righteous (Pro.3:18).
Proverbs 18:10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe. [KJV] . . . The Name of the Lord is the same as the Lord Himself! He is a refuge, a place of complete safety for all that trust in Him. He is as a strong fortress to those overwhelmed by grief, sorrow, pain, etc.
Isa. 3:10 Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings. [KJV]
The righteous are people:
- 1. Who fear God.
- 2. Departs from evil.
- 3. Walk according to the words of God.
- 4. Expects and prepares for a glorious eternity.
- 5. Who believe what God states.
It shall be well with the righteous in all circumstances of life: prosperity, adversity, sickness, health, death, judgment and eternity. The righteous shall obtain benefit from being a righteous man, and walking in a righteous way.
Jer. 20:12 And thou, Jehovah of hosts, who triest the righteous, who seest the reins and the heart, let me see thy vengeance on them; for unto thee have I revealed my cause. [KJV] . . . When God tries the righteous, it will be in sharp contrast to the hasty judgments of men (Jer.11:20; 17:10). God shall judge the hearts of men which a human cannot see! The heart of a person is where ALL thoughts, words and deeds begin! If you seriously consider this FACT, you will realize that God is a righteous God and will NEVER do any wrong.
Matthew 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. [KJV] . . . Just as the body hungers and thirsts for physical food and drink, so too does the soul hunger and thirst for spiritual food and drink. No person is independent of God. Just as the body depends on food and drink for its nourishment, health and strength here on Earth, so does the soul depend on God from Heaven. Heavenly things cannot support the body; and for certain, earthly things CANNOT support the soul!
When the soul hungers and thirsts after righteousness (holiness), it must be made a partaker of the Living Bread, (John 8:48), or it shall perish eternally in Hell. IF a person hungers and thirsts to know more of God, that person shall be filled! IF you hunger after worldly riches, you are an idolater and will receive eternal death in Hell (Mat.25:41,46; Mark 3:29; 2 Thes.1:9; Rev.2:11; 20:6,14; 21:8). But, IF you hunger for righteousness, you are a worshipper of Almighty God and shall be rewarded with eternal life in Heaven with Him.
Matthew 5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. [KJV] . . . The Bible teaches how to enter Heaven. It depends, NOT on the amount of our excelling in anything . . . but totally on our having the character which God demands . . . that being our righteousness. BUT, the Bible clearly tells us OUR righteousness is worthless and filthy.
Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. [KJV] . . . So, HOW do we become righteous in God's eyes? We cannot, on our own merit! But there is a Way! And God provided it for us!
1 Cor. 1:30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: [KJV] . . . Faith in Christ is the answer! It is the ONLY answer!
Our righteousness MUST exceed the righteousness of the Pharisees (hypocrites), and yes, we have hypocrites today! An outward and formal righteousness will NOT hold up in God's eyes! Our righteousness must be inward, vital, spiritual and come from our heart! We must have a personal relationship with Jesus, for God to exchange our vile sins for the righteousness of Christ. And then, we must trust AND obey God and walk in the Light. If we don't, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. Pretty serious stuff!
Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. [KJV] . . . We must FIRST seek His righteousness . . . a holiness of heart and purity of life which God requires of those who profess (claim) to be subjects of that spiritual kingdom. There are millions who say "I'm a Christian," but if you watch how they live, you KNOW that they are hypocrites. A TRUE Christian possesses Christ in their heart and walks with Him on that narrow path (Mat.7:13-14). Worldly cares and fears is NOT what we should worry about. What should concern us is our salvation. If we strive to live a righteous life, seek God first, ALL that we NEED will be given to us. Notice that I said what we NEED . . . NOT what we want!
Matthew 13:43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. [KJV] . . . Before we believe God and accept His Son as our Saviour and Lord, it is as if we are under a dark cloud. We are a child of the devil (1 John 3:5-10) until we are born again into the family of God (John 1:12-13; 3:3-8). Beware . . . there are many ungodly pretenders and claimants of their privileges, and many false leaders who obstruct the path of Light! BEWARE! Believe God!
Romans 1:17 For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith. [KJV] . . . The righteous live by FAITH!
Romans 3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe. [KJV] . . . The righteousness God accepts from us comes by FAITH in Jesus!
Romans 4:3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. [KJV] . . . The Bible clearly tells us what God considers righteousness . . . believing Him!
Romans 4:5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. [KJV] . . . God declares us "Not guilty" in the courts of Heaven because our faith counts as righteousness.
Romans 4:6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works. [KJV] . . . Even though we have NO good works, He declares us righteous because of our faith in Jesus.
Romans 4:13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. [KJV] . . . Abraham or his seed were/are not righteous through obedience to the law, but through the righteousness of faith. Simple faith in the divine Promises. Praise God! Thank You Jesus!
Romans 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness. [KJV] . . . Our faith must be sincere, from the heart, and it must influence the way that we live. It must be a genuine faith which influences the whole mind. Believeth unto righteousness. We must believe so that justification is obtained. It is God's way of justifying people, the way by which we may be declared righteous in His sight. The moment a sinner believes with this true, sincere faith; he is justified (Rom.5:1); his sins are forgiven; and he is introduced to the wondrous favor of God, he is righteous! No person can be justified in any other way; for this is God's Plan, and He will not depart from it. Do NOT listen to FALSE religions that teach justification by works. This is a damnable heresy! (2 Peter 2:1-2).
1 Cor. 1:23-30 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: [KJV] . . . God deliberately chose what the the world considers foolish to shame those who think they are wise. And He chose those who are powerless to shame those who are powerful. God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing or useless, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important . . . WHY? So that no one can ever boast in the Presence of God.
God alone made it possible for you to be in Christ Jesus, by a way that most of the world think is not enough! God chose FAITH in Christ because it is possible for ANYONE! No worldly wisdom required! No work on our part required! No college education required! No payment necessary! Just simple Faith in Christ. Believing God (1 John 5:10-12). For our benefit God made Christ to be wisdom itself. He is the one who made us acceptable to God. He made us pure and holy, and He gave Himself to purchase our freedom.
John 6:28-29 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. [KJV] . . . The ONLY work that God requires of us is to believe on Jesus whom God the Father has sent!
2 Cor. 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. [KJV] . . . For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the Perfect Offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ. Christ paid a debt that he did NOT owe, because we had a debt that we could never pay!
Gal. 2:21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. [KJV] . . . There are some major cults (Catholics, Mormons) who teach righteousness comes from works (obeying commandments). NO one has ever been able to keep the commandments except Jesus. IF righteousness came from keeping the Law, then our Lord Jesus died for nothing!
Gal. 3:6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. [KJV] . . . Abraham believed God! Abraham had faith (Gen.15:6).
Eph. 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. [KJV] . . . This speaks of being born again, being born into the family of God. IF a person claims to be a child of God and continues on in the sinful lifestyle, they are NOT saved. You MUST display a new nature because you are a new person, created in God's likeness, righteous, holy, and true.
