7 Promises of God to Man

We all are familiar with promises. We all are also aware of seeing them made and broken. Anyone who has lived for a number of years would surely never claim that they have kept every promise they ever made. We forget and we are careless about something that we should consider to be important! Other times circumstances may be beyond our control. People do change their mind . . . but when a TRUE Christian makes a promise . . . they should NEVER break their promise to anyone.

BUT . . . what about the Promises of God? Are God’s Promises like those we sinful people make? NO! Absolutely NOT! HOW are they different? HOW certain are they? The apostle Paul wrote about the Promises of God to Abraham: Romans 4:13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. (KJV) Romans 4:16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all, (KJV)

God's Promise to Abraham was told to him in Genesis Chapter 12. It was repeated in Chapter 22. Genesis 22:17-18 That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; 18  And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice. (KJV)

Dear one, a promise is of no more value than the character and the ability of the ONE who makes it.

Consider the following:
#1. He has promised to supply every need we have. Philippians 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. (KJV) . . . God has indebted Himself only to our needs NOT our wants! I think this would include food, clothing, shelter, companionship, love and salvation through Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son (John 3:16). God NEVER promises the vast array of luxuries that we have come to think we need! Years ago, my husband and I lived for 6 months without electricity. It was a remote area and it took the electric company that long to arrange it. When they finally came through the woods with the electric, I cried . . . not because I was glad they were there, but because I wish we had never requested it! God indeed supplied our EVERY need in that time and He has continued to fulfill this Promise to us every single day. God is SO Good!!! God can be trusted!

#2. God has promised that His grace is sufficient for us. 2 Cor. 12:9-10 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
10  Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong
. (KJV) . . . Both my husband and I are elderly and have some un-fixable health problems. Jesus made this Promise and we both claim it as ours! He has NEVER let us down and I KNOW He NEVER shall!

#3. God has promised that His children will not be overtaken with temptation. 1 Cor. 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. (KJV) . . . This Promise tells us that God will not allow any temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, He will show you a way out! When I read this, my thoughts are: “When God shuts a door, look around, there is a window open.” Our awesome God will NEVER give us more that we can bear! It is a Promise from Almighty God! Believe it! There have been times when I thought, God must think I am stronger than I really am . . . but He has ALWAYS seen me through, and I know He always will in the future! Just remember: God brought Israel through the Red Sea on DRY ground (Ex.14:21-27), and then drowned the Egyptians when they tried to follow. God kept Shadrach, Meshrach and Abednego safe from the fiery furnace (Dan.3:19-27); and God kept Daniel safe from lions (Dan.6:16-23). Isaiah 43:2 When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. (KJV) . . .  For more encouragement, read Hebrews chapter 11.

#4. God has promised us victory over death. When God resurrected Jesus, it was His way of reassuring us of OUR bodily our resurrection. Acts 2:32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. (KJV) 1 Cor. 15:3-4 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4  And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: (KJV)
1 Cor. 15:55-58 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52  In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53  For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54  So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. 55  O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? 56   The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. 57  But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58  Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. (KJV)

#5. God has promised that ALL things work together for good to those who love and serve Him faithfully. Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. (KJV) . . . It can be very difficult for us to see and understand how something we consider to be bad and painful, that can end up working for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose, but it can! Simply stand up boldly in your faith in Jesus! God will see you through!

#6. God has promised that those who believe in Jesus and are baptized for the forgiveness of sins will be saved. Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. (KJV) . . . See our commentary on Mark 16:16.

Is baptized . . . does this Scripture teach that baptism is necessary for salvation? NO, it does not, nor does any other Scripture teach that baptism is necessary for salvation. The false doctrine that teaches that baptism is necessary for salvation is known as "baptismal regeneration." I believe that baptism is a very important step of obedience for a Christian, but I do NOT believe that baptism is required for salvation. The thief on the cross was NOT baptized! See: . . . . . . . . . . . http://www.judgmentcoming.org/f_falsehoods_baptismal_regeneration.1.htm
I believe that baptism is done in obedience to the Lord Jesus. I believe that a Christian should be water baptized by immersion, if possible. Baptism illustrates a believer’s identification with Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection (Rom.6:3-4). I think that being immersed in water illustrates dying and being buried with Christ; coming up out of the water pictures Christ’s Resurrection.
IF baptism were necessary for salvation, it would require something in addition to faith in Jesus Christ for salvation, and that would be a FALSE works-based salvation. The Bible clearly tells us that salvation is FREE Gift! (Rom.5:18; 6:23; Eph.2:8-9). IF we add anything to the Gospel, we are saying that Jesus' death on the cross was NOT sufficient to purchase our salvation. To say that baptism is necessary for salvation is to say that we must add our own good works and obedience in addition to Christ's death in order to make it sufficient for salvation. Jesus' death alone paid for our sins! (1 Cor. 15:14-17).

John 3:15-17 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. (KJV)
John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. (KJV)
John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. (KJV)
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. (KJV)
Romans 10:9-13 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10  For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11  For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. 12  For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13  For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (KJV)
1 John 5:10-13 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11  And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12  He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. 13  These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. (KJV)

#7. God has promised His people eternal life. John 10:27-30 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28  And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29  My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. 30  I and my Father are one. (KJV)
(KJV)
John 20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. (KJV)
1 John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. (KJV)

It is my opinion that none of the above Promises apply to unbelievers. But, you can be a BELIEVER in Jesus Christ . . . and then they ALL will apply to you!
