Standing Firm on God’s Word When Everything Around You is Shaking
WHAT is Unshakeable Faith? It is Faith that stands, confident and firm on God’s Holy Word when everything around you is shaking. Storms of life are a common thing in the lives of believers and unbelievers. HOW a person handles the storm is what reveals IF a person is a TRUE Christian or not!
IF you are not experiencing any storms in your life right now, you will! Scripture is very clear that trouble and trials will be a part of our life.
John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. (KJV)
1 Thes. 5:18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. (KJV)
James 1:2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; (KJV)
What do we do when storms hit? What do we do when we can’t see God actively working in our circumstances?
In Psalm 71, the psalmist cries out to God for help. His troubles were piling high and he could not see God at work in his life. Consider some things the writer did to stand firm on God’s Word when everything around him was shaking.
Some help for unshakeable faith:
*****#1. Psalm 71:1-2 In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion.
2 Deliver me in thy righteousness, and cause me to escape: incline thine ear unto me, and save me. (KJV) . . . The psalmist put his complete trust in the Lord (Ps.31:1)
*****#2. Psalm 71:3-4 Be thou my strong habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given commandment to save me; for thou art my rock and my fortress. 4 Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man. (KJV) . . . He is asking in faith for the Lord to deliver him from his enemies.
*****#3. Psalm 71:5-6 For thou art my hope, O Lord GOD: thou art my trust from my youth.
6 By thee have I been holden up from the womb: thou art he that took me out of my mother's bowels: my praise shall be continually of thee. (KJV) . . . He is remembering how the Lord had been there from the time he was born.
*****#4. Psalm 71:7-8 I am as a wonder unto many; but thou art my strong refuge.
8 Let my mouth be filled with thy praise and with thy honour all the day. (KJV) . . . He is glorifying God for Who He is! His faith in the Lord stood firm!
*****#5. Psalm 71:9-13 Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth. 10 For mine enemies speak against me; and they that lay wait for my soul take counsel together, 11 Saying, God hath forsaken him: persecute and take him; for there is none to deliver him. 12 O God, be not far from me: O my God, make haste for my help. 3 Be thou my strong habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given commandment to save me; for thou art my rock and my fortress. (KJV) . . . He asks in faith that the Lord stay with him in his old age, for many were persecuting him and there was none to help him except the Lord. He prays for speedy aid.
*****#6. Psalm 71:14-19 But I will hope continually, and will yet praise thee more and more.
15 My mouth shall shew forth thy righteousness and thy salvation all the day; for I know not the numbers thereof. 16 I will go in the strength of the Lord GOD: I will make mention of thy righteousness, even of thine only. 17 O God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works. 18 Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come. 19 Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high, who hast done great things: O God, who is like unto thee! (KJV) . . . The writer is here in a means of transporting joy and praise, that rises up from his faith and hope in God. There is a change of his voice; his fears are quieted, his hopes raised, and his prayers turn into thanksgiving. Since we all hope in the One and Only One that will NEVER fail us, let our faith in Him stand firm as we praise Him more and more with each passing day! The longer we live, the more we should honor, glorify and praise God and the more we should abound in it. When we have said all we can about the glory of God's amazing grace, there is still a mountain more to be said! His awesome love and grace can never be drained, and we should never grow weary of shouting it from the mountain top!
*****#7. Psalm 71:21-24 Thou shalt increase my greatness, and comfort me on every side.
22 I will also praise thee with the psaltery, even thy truth, O my God: unto thee will I sing with the harp, O thou Holy One of Israel. 23 My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing unto thee; and my soul, which thou hast redeemed. 24 My tongue also shall talk of thy righteousness all the day long: for they are confounded, for they are brought unto shame, that seek my hurt. (KJV) . . . The psalmist praises the righteousness of the Lord and the great salvation obtained only in that way. He will speak of it not only on a Sabbath day, but every day for the rest of his life! Not just in solemn devotion, but on every occasion, all the day long. Why will he always dwell on this? Because it is impossible to measure the value or the fullness of these blessings. The righteousness of the Lord is wonderful when applied and the salvation everlasting. God will NOT cast off his grey-headed servants when no longer capable of laboring as they have done. This Psalm touches my heart for I am old and grey-headed like the psalmist. I do not know how much longer it will be before the Lord takes me Home. The Lord strengthens His people, deep in their souls, when old age sets in. And my friend, there is a debt which the old servants of Christ owe to following generations, and that is to leave behind them a firm testimony to their faith in Jesus, and to the Holy Word of God, and Truth of God's Promises; and especially the everlasting righteousness of the Redeemer. We are assured of deliverance and victory, so let us spend our remaining days praising the Holy One of Israel with all our all. And as we speak of His righteousness, and sing His praises, we shall rise far above fears and hardships, and have a deep joy of Heaven. The work of redemption should, above all God's works, be spoken of by us in our praises and thankfulness. The Lamb that was slain, and has redeemed us to God, is worthy of all blessing and praise. His righteousness (1 Cor.1:30), justifies us in the eyes of God the Father (Rom.5:1). Thank You Jesus!
Is there a storm raging around you today? Do not wait! Cry out to God for help. He is there, ready and willing to help you! Praise Him and look forward to His deliverance!
