Are We Justified by Faith AND Works?

Romans 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: (KJV) . . . Justified! Declared not guilty in the courts of Heaven! How I love that word! Our justifying faith respects Christ as our Saviour in all of His anointed offices, Prophet, Priest and King. We trust Him, accept Him, and cleave to Him. Jews and Gentiles alike, are most welcome to God through Christ. There is NO difference to God! His righteousness is upon ALL that believe; it’s not only offered to them, but is put upon them as a garment. But, this ‘garment’ comes upon only those who believe! It is God’s free grace, His free mercy; there is nothing in us to deserve such favors. It comes to us absolutely free; because Christ bought it for us, and paid the FULL price; all we need do is reach out and accept it.

Romans 3:28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. (KJV)  . . . WHY does God save us by faith alone?

  • #1. Faith wipes out any pride of human effort, because faith is not a deed that we can do.
  • #2. Faith glorifies what God has done, not what people do.
  • #3. Faith tells us we cannot keep the law or measure up to God’s standards; we must have help.
  • #4. Faith is based on our relationship with God, NOT our performance for God.

Our faith forms a personal relationship with Jesus and the sinner, in which the believer is pardoned and justified for Jesus’ sake. The unbeliever who is not united to or committed and devoted to Him, remains under God’s condemnation (John 3:18,36; 8:24).

Romans 3:30 Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith. (KJV) . . . There is only ONE God, and there is only ONE Way of being accepted by Him. God makes people right with Himself ONLY by faith in the Blood of Jesus, whether they are Jews or Gentiles (“whosoever”). Salvation has always been by the sacrifice which a man brought to God in faith, which pointed to the coming of Christ Jesus.
Romans 4:3-5 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. 4  Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. 5  But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. (KJV) . . . When believers are justified by faith, their faith is counted for righteousness, the same as was Abraham. Their faith is the authorized means of uniting them to Christ, “the Lord our Righteousness” (1 Cor.1:30).

Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: (KJV) . . . Justified = just as if I had never sinned. Declared NOT guilty in the courts of Heaven. Made right with God by Jesus’ righteousness (1 Cor.1:30). . . . There are different kinds of peace mentioned in the Bible. World peace, or living without conflict or wars will NOT happen until the return of Christ. A tranquil soul is the peace Jesus promises to believers who completely trust and rely on Him, who walk with Him, rest in Him and obey Him (John 14:27). “Peace that passeth all understanding” as stated in Phil.4:7. Since this peace passes all understanding, I cannot explain it to you. No one can!
The peace mentioned in Romans 5:1 is peace with God. Without Jesus, all people are at odds with God. All people are sinners and our sin makes us enemies of God, as we will see in verse 10. To attain peace with God, we must believe and accept Christ as our Saviour and Lord. Only when we are washed in the precious Blood of Jesus (1 John 1:18-19) can we ever have peace with God. PEACE is just the first benefit of salvation.

Romans 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. (KJV) . . . Justified = made right with God. DELIVERANCE FROM GOD’S WRATH is yet another benefit! The “wrath” mentioned here refers to two things! Being condemned to Hell for unbelief (John 3:18), and the Tribulation period (Rev.3:10). I am a firm believer that TRUE believers will NOT go through the Great Tribulation! Jesus will come at the Rapture and take us out of the world BEFORE the Great Tribulation (1 Thes.4:13-18).

Titus 3:7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. (KJV) . . . Being justified (Rom.3:24; 5:1) through the wondrous love of God, having the guilt of our sins removed, and the righteousness of Christ (1 Cor.1:30), accredited to us for righteousness, we should be made heirs, through adoption, be made children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ, (Rom.8:15,17). According to the hope of eternal life . . . this refers to the hope of eternal life (Tit.1:2), meaning that we have that hope in the advantage of our being adopted into the family of God, and being made heirs. He has received us as His children, and permits us to hope that we shall live with Him for ever. The hope of eternal life is again pointing to the great hope of the believer, the coming of Christ for His church (1 Thes.4:13-18).

James 2:21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? (KJV) . . . James, like Paul, recognizes the Scripture Truth, that it was Abraham's faith that was counted to Abraham for righteousness in his justification before God. (Gal.3:6). Romans 4:2-3 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. 3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. (KJV) . . . His being willing to offer his son, Isaac was proof ofAbraham's faith.

James 2:24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. (KJV) . . . This Passage is misunderstood by many. Works is NOT the cause of obtaining justification (Rom.5:1), but works effectively declares faith to be real. James says it takes good works to prove your faith.

At first glance, it seems like the Bible requires works for salvation; BUT, that is not so! James declares in James 2:21 (above), "Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?"  James is simply saying that IF a person is truly saved by faith, then there should be some FRUIT (good works) in that person's life to show it. James was NOT teaching that works are necessary to be saved . . . because they are NOT! Abraham was saved by faith ALONE!  "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us..." (Tit.3:5).
Notice James' words in: James 2:18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. (KJV)

The apostle Paul stresses the ROOT of salvation, whereas James stresses the FRUIT of salvation. These two godly men do NOT contradict each other as some say! I think they compliment each other!

With God we are justified by FAITH; BUT with men we are justified by WORKS.  The reason is simply because man cannot see out heart; but God can.  The best works we could ever do are far from perfect and impure, and CANNOT possibly be righteousness, so they CANNOT justify us in the sight of God. Works are totally worthless in our obtaining eternal salvation . . . BUT . . . after we are saved, we should want to do good works to show our gratitude to God.

Saved by God's grace and our faith! NOT by works!

Eph. 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. (KJV)

Romans 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: (KJV) . . . FREELY . . . we do NOT have to work to be justified!
What does Jesus say about works? John 6:28-29 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? 29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. (KJV) . . . BELIEVE in faith!

1 Peter 1:18-19 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19  But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: (KJV) . . .  Forasmuch as ye know . . . I hope and pray that you KNOW (John 20:31; 1 John 5:13) that you have been redeemed. You can KNOW!!
Peter is speaking of the purpose of the work of God for your salvation, which is redemption. My friend, Christ Jesus paid a big price for you. We all are sinners doomed for Hell. Scripture says "...the soul that sinneth, it shall die" (Eze. 18:4). God has NEVER revoked that decree. God NEVER changes. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Heb.13:8). This Truth of God is the terror of the wicked, IF they give any thought to it at all.
That ye were not redeemed with corruptible things . . . this implies they were in a bondage condition, because of their own errors, until they were redeemed by Christ (Tit 2:14).
As silver and gold . . . the most precious things, of greatest value among men.
From your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers . . . empty, foolish, unprofitable, vain, worthless traditions and rituals. The Jews had added innumerable religious burdens and empty ceremonies which they thought to be needed for salvation. (Mat. 15:3; Mark 7:7; Gal. 1:14). This goes on today in many cults.
Consider Catholicism:  http://www.worldlychaos.org/w_c_catholic_laws_rituals_wrong.htm
God redeemed us from the bondage of sin, NOT with corruptible money, but with the precious Blood of His own Son (Rom.6:6,7; 1 Cor. 6:20; Col. 2:13,14; Heb.9:12). We can NEVER escape from sin on our own; only the life of God's Son can free us.

Exodus 12:13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt. (KJV) . . . Long ago the Jews were slaves in Egypt. When Pharaoh refused to let them go, God punished the people of Egypt. He sent an angel to kill many of them. God told the Jews to kill a lamb and put its blood on their doorways. When the angel saw the blood on the door jams, he did not kill anyone in that house. The blood of the lamb saved the Jews in that house from death. The lamb had to be perfect in every way, without spot or blemish (Ex.12:5). Jesus lived a perfect life and never did anything wrong, never sinned (2 Cor.5:21; Heb.4:15; 7:26; 9:14,28; Jam.5:6; 1 Pet.1:18-19; 2:22-24; 1 John 3:3,5). So, when Jesus died on the cross, He was the perfect Lamb that the people were looking to in the O.T.

Good fruit produced by believers because they are grateful.

Matthew 7:17-18 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. (KJV)

Luke 6:43 For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. (KJV)

James 3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. (KJV)

It is most important for us to remember that we do NOT confuse the ROOT of our faith, with the FRUIT of our faith . . . because ADDING works to faith is a sure road to Hell. Do NOT believe those cults that oppose the Holy Word of God. Believe God! Romans 4:5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. (KJV) . . . Thank You Jesus!
