Believing and Faith . . . Is there a difference between Faith and Belief?

  • To believe is to: be convinced; to accept; to have no doubt; to consider as true; to be certain of.
  • Faith is: confidence; assurance; trust; total dependence on; unquestioning belief.

Most people believe that there is a God out there, somewhere; but that is NOT enough! Even the demons believe that! James 2:19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. [KJV] To simply have a uncertain feeling that there is a Supreme Being, does not and cannot please nor honor God.
You may know that God’s love and grace are limitless even if you are not a ‘believer,’ but you may not know that unless you believe on the Name of Jesus, God’s Son, as your personal Saviour and Lord, you will never experience that love or that grace, in the salvation of your soul.

  • To believe means you know you cannot save yourself. You must admit you are a sinner.
  • To believe means that you know that salvation is through Christ alone, and only He can save you.

Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. [KJV] To believe means that if you want to go to Heaven, you must go through Christ. John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. [KJV] The Father is in Heaven.

  • To believe means you know Christ is WHO He says He is, and will do what He said He will do. Jesus was more than just a good Man who taught Truths.
  • To believe means you accept what Christ did on the cross; redeeming your soul from Hell and God’s wrath, and completely forgiving you of all your sins.
  • To believe means you must have a personal relationship with Christ; trusting Him as your loyal Friend and Guide in all things. You acknowledge and honor His awesome worth.

  • Faith is: confidence; assurance; trust; dependence; unquestioning belief.

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (KJV)

I don’t think that there is any other part of the Christian life more important than faith. We cannot but it, sell it or give it to our friends. The dictionary says that faith is belief in, devotion to, or trust in somebody or something, especially without sound proof. It also defines faith as belief in and devotion to God. According to the Bible, faith is belief and trust  in the one, true God without actually seeing Him.

Faith is not something we are born with, nor is faith a result of diligence in study or pursuit of spiritual ways. The Bible makes it quite clear that it is a GIFT from God and can come only from God.
Gal. 5:22  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, (KJV) . . . Only the Holy Spirit within us (Rom.8:9), can produce faith in us!
Eph. 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9  Not of works, lest any man should boast. (KJV)
Rom. 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (KJV)
Faith is simply given to us by God, along with His grace and mercy, according to His holy plan and purpose, and because of that, He gets all the glory.

Why should we have faith? God planned a way to distinguish between those who belong to Him and those who do not, and it is called faith. Quite simply, we must have faith to please God. None of us have faith in God just because we want something from Him. God simply loves to bless those who are obedient and faithful.

1 Peter 1:8-9 Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:9  Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls. (KJV) . . . Faith in Jesus brings eternal life in Heaven!

According to the Bible, faith is vital to Christianity. Without demonstrating faith and trust in God, we have no place with Him. We believe in God’s existence by faith. Most people have a vague, unreal idea of just WHO God is and they lack the reverence necessary for His exalted position in their lives. These people have NO true faith needed to have an eternal relationship with the God who loves them. YES! Our faith can falter at times! But, dear one, any time God allows trial and testing in our life, He will give help us to stand firm in His Word. This is why James tells us to consider it “all joy” when we fall into trials, because the testing of our faith produces perseverance and matures us, providing the proof that our faith is real.

James 1:2-4 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3  Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4  But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. (KJV)

Divers temptations . . . means various trials. In other words, when you are having trouble, don't start belly-aching as if something terrible has happened to you. You are to rejoice and count it all joy that God is testing you in this way! (1 Pet.4:13).

Many people say they have accepted God's will, yet they go around with a long, dreary face. Unless you are really reconciled to the will of God, and truly desire it in your life, you CANNOT rejoice. God does not give us trouble to annoy us; if you are a TRUE child of God, there is a reason! Believe that! . . . What is a TRUE child of God? See: http://www.godcannotlie.org/true_children_of_god.htm

James 1:3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. (KJV)

God ALWAYS has a goal in mind. And ALL that comes your way shall benefit you in some way (Rom.8:28). You can count on that. I think what James is speaking of here is about the attitude of your heart toward your trouble. If you believe that God wants only the best for His children, you accept the trial, the trouble, knowing that He will NEVER leave you, NEVER forsake you (Heb.13:5), and that His grace is ALWAYS sufficient (2 Cor.12:9), no matter what happens. And friend, God will NEVER give you more than you can bear (1 Cor.10:13). God is SO good to us!

We will not always understand what purpose God has for what He allows. What comes our way is His way to test our faith. We walk by faith and not by sight (2 Cor.5:7).

Trials test our faith and the one who stands firm in them proves their belief and trust in God is staunch and their faith sincere. Trials lead to patience and patience brings us to perfection (Jam.1:3-4,12; Rom.5:3-5; 1 Pet.1:7).

James 1:4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. (KJV)

But let patience have her perfect work . . . or be brought unto maturity; which may mean both in sincerity and persevering to the end. Patience can be said to be perfect, only when it is real and sincere, and not evaded! Because there really is an artificial faith, a hypocritical love, and a hope that has no real expectation of the things that God so graciously promises in His Word (Tit.1:2; 1 Cor.15:19). Let patience have its full effect in you, both in making you completely subject to God's will, and standing firm continually to the end.

That ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing . . . that you may grow perfect in this grace, as well as in others, and have the image of Christ (to whom ye are to be conformed) completed in you.

Wanting nothing . . . not failing, not fainting in trials, not defective in any thing which is a needful part of your Christian life. Hang in there!

Six Perfect Things in the Book of James:

  • #1. Perfect work of patience (Jam.1:4).
  • #2. Perfect knowledge (Acts 24:22; Eph.4:13; Phil.3:15).
  • #3. Perfect gifts (Jam.1:17).
  • #4. Perfect law of liberty Jam.1:25)
  • #5. Perfect faith by works (Jam.2:22).
  • #6. Perfect man by restraint (Jam.3:2).
