The BIBLE warns us against not hearing God!

The Lord has always has had trouble keeping those who start out to serve Him, but change horses in the midst of the stream. They backslide from hearing what He has to say. The Bible has many warnings for us.

Zechariah 7:11-13 But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear. 12  Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts. 13  Therefore it is come to pass, that as he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the LORD of hosts: (KJV)  . . . But they refused to hearken . . . meaning the Jews, before their captivity. They refused to heed to the above warnings, refused to obey the voice of God in them.
And pulled away the shoulder . . . pulled away from serving the Lord, and obeying His Word, like a "backsliding heifer" (Jer.7:26; Hos.4:16; Neh.9:29; Acts 7:57), that would not submit to the yoke. The Jews could not, would not, bear the yoke of the Law, nor the burden of duty, they would NOT hear the words of warning, or receive the rebuke given to them.
And stopped their ears . . . so they would not hear; like the deaf adder (Ps.58:4; 106:24-29; Isa.6:10; Jer 7:26; Ac 7:57). They did not want to hear what God had to say, so they pretended they had not heard. What absolute contempt this is to the Lord, then and NOW, in today's world!
Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone . . . "stone" here is translated a "diamond" (Jer.17:1), and said to be harder than a flint (Eze.3:9; 11:19).
Lest they should hear the law . . . God's Law left NO room for debate. God expected them and us, to obey! But, they did NOT want to hear it, and they refused to obey it, just like today! The law of God by Moses . . . Moses of whom they boasted, BUT the Law brought by him, they despised. There are millions today who despise the Law of God. BOTH Jews and Gentiles!
Lest they should hear the law, and the words which the Lord of hosts hath seat in his Spirit by the former prophets . . . the words of reproof, admonition, caution and exhortation, which Jeremiah and others were sent to deliver to them, under the influence of the Spirit of God. The words, counsels and commands which the Lord of hosts, their God, spoke and knowing that He spoke them, they would NOT hear . . . just like today!
Therefore came a great wrath from the Lord of hosts . . . "therefore came a great wrath" (2 Chron.36:16-21). When they "pulled away the shoulder" . . . they pushed away from them the yoke of obedience, and the Lord laid on them the yoke of oppression. When they made their heart hard as "an adamant stone," God broke those hard hearts with hard judgments. Hard hearts must expect hard treatment . . . then and now! The harder the stone is, the harder the blow of the hammer must be to break it. Their continued stubbornness brought the Chaldeans upon them, who carried them captive into Babylon.

All of the former prophets acted and spoke by the same Spirit, stressing to them the same duties, and foretelling the same miseries if they disobeyed. Yet stubbornness persisted!
#1. The words of God are not heard.
#2. The resistive shoulder is shown. People turn away from God. Since they would not bear the burden of the law, sadly they bore the heavy weight of their sins.
#3. Obduracy (stubbornness). Their heart of stone could not be softened by promises or threats. The only thing left was the great wrath of God.

Therefore it is come to pass, that as he cried . . . the Lord by the former prophets told them many times to repent and obey.
And they would not hear . . . they refused to hear His Words, refused to obey His voice. But when God's wrath came down on them, they changed their minds.
So they cried . . . when God's wrath came down on them, when they were besieged in Jerusalem, and were carried captive into Babylon.
And I would not hear, saith the Lord of hosts . . . but it was too late, for then God would NOT hear them! He would NOT deliver them out of the hands of their enemies. God would not hear: (Pro.1:24,27-28; Isa.1:15; 66:4; Jer.7:13; 11:11,14; 14:12; Eze.8:18; Hos.5:6; Mat.23:37-38). BEWARE!!!

People, even professing Christians today, have made their minds as a hard stone, shutting out the Word of the Lord. The message of the prophets in the Bible has been ignored, not heard, or rejected by those to whom it is given. People today hear so much, but so much of what they listen to is trash, NOT of God. They would much rather listen to worldly talk show hosts, or hostesses, NOT to the Lord, the pastor of their church, and Bible teachers.  Their minds are "waxed gross" (Mat.13:15; Acts 28:27), or hardened with these teachings, ideas and lies of the devil. When the Truth is spoken by the Lord, through His Word, or through the prophets of God, or through the Spirit, His voice is not heard.

Isaiah 6:9-10 And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. 10  Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed. (KJV) . . . Jesus confirmed this message given by Isaiah. Jesus quoted it and applied it to the people of His day, and ours!

Matthew 13:13-17 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. 14  And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: 15  For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. 16  But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. 17  For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them. (KJV) . . . Jesus spoke to them in parables, because . . . seeing, see not, and hearing, hear not. Neither do they understand. In them, then and now, is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias. By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand, and seeing, ye shall see, and shall not perceive. For this people's heart is waxed gross. Waxed gross = make fat, stupid, insensible, hard. Their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed, lest at any time, they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

It seems that God either spoke those words to the prophet, as well with reference to those Jews that were to live in the time of Christ, as to those Jews who were living when Isaiah prophesied; or at least, that the words were as true of these Jews as they were of those, so the prophecy of Isaiah was fulfilled in them. Matthew seems to speak of the more close cause; Isaiah, Luke, John and Paul of the higher but more remote cause. Matthew speaks of their sinful act preceding, while John, Luke, Paul and Isaiah, of the judicial act of God, resulting from their sinful act. God first sent them Moses and the prophets, by whom they might have seen and known His will . . . but they would NOT see, would NOT hear, would NOT understand, would NOT repent and would NOT change, and would NOT be healed. God finally left them to be condemned by their own mind. It is the same today. God will tolerate willful sin just so long and then he will turn His back on those people. A person CANNOT reject God and knowingly keep on in sin, and get away with it. BEWARE!!!
