Christian Meditation is Misunderstood
To meditate is to think deeply or focus one's mind for a period of time in silence and solitude, for spiritual purposes. Meditation is a continued or extended thought; reflection; examination; thinking deeply, focusing the mind for a period of time, in complete silence for spiritual purposes. To meditate is to engage in inspection or reflection on a subject; to engage in mental exercise (deep thought) for the purpose of reaching a heightened level of spiritual awareness. It is to focus our thoughts on a particular subject; to reflect on or ponder over it; to think deeply, to focus our mind on what God is personally saying to us in His Holy Word.
Meditation is popular with many people, but most do not understand WHAT it is or HOW a Christian should do it correctly. To meditate means to focus on one thing. Eastern religions urge us to focus on an object or our breathing for the purpose of emptying our minds and becoming “enlightened.” This is NOT how a TRUE Christian is to meditate. We should instead focus wholly on the Word of God, so that we can be filled with the Truth of God.
When the Lord called Joshua to lead Israel after Moses’ death, He told him: Joshua 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. (KJV)
Why did He tell Joshua this? The Lord wanted to fill Joshua’s heart and mind with what was in that Book. Why? So that he would know just what to do and when, and how to lead Israel in the days that were ahead of him. How can we apply this verse to us today? IF we meditate on the Bible, the Lord will reveal to us His Truths and His instructions to us .
Meditation consists of three things:
#1. Shut out the world. NO TV, NO cell phones, NO distractions of any kind! Solitude, complete quietness!
#2. Shut ourselves away to God alone. Meditation is NOT a group activity! It is a personal and very PRIVATE time alone with the Lord.
#3. Focusing our attention on a specific Passage of Scripture. This is NOT just casually reading God’s Word. It truly is a very private communication with the Lord, a close, personal fellowship with Him!
SO . . . HOW do we begin to meditate? Start by asking Him to reveal to us what He wants to say to us. This can be accomplished only by silent quietness. Our mind must not run to and fro . . . from one thing to another. We must listen intently for His instructions and guidance while reading, thinking and praying about whatever Passage is before us.
Meditation is a very gratifying and rewarding practice that increases our personal closeness with the Lord and it also increases our fascination with the Bible as we hear Him speak to us personally through His Word. God has also given us His indwelling Spirit who enables us to interpret Scripture properly and He also empowers us to apply what we learn to our lives. Meditation is a marvelous time, and we must be sure to take time to listen! We do NOT want to miss anything He has to say to us! Meditation is NOT a hurry-up project!
Many Christians read the Bible and pray, but are they meditating on what they read? Most often the answer is no! Our hurry-up world tries to pull us in many directions and distract us from what God wants for us. This is why it is SO important to focus on God’s Word. Satan will do anything to keep us away from what God desires for us! BEWARE!!!
Meditation that works has needed requirements:
Priority. Satan will do his best to prevent our efforts of focusing on God’s Word. He knows we are absorbing the Truths into our souls. Meditation must be a priority in our lives, to accomplish this fact.
Place. We must have a private place to meet alone with God; where we can have complete and quiet solitude.
Purpose. The reason for meditation is to hear from the Lord. Any time that we truly concentrate on His Word and seek His guidance, He will often give us very specific passages of Scriptures to answer our requests. When we understand what He has told us, our trust in Him increases and our worries seem to go away.
Plan. We must set aside a specific time to meet with the Lord privately . . . to read His Word, ask for direction, and listen for what He will say to us. This spectacular opportunity to be alone with the Almighty Creator of the Universe, will soon become the most treasured part of each day as we learn to know our awesome Almighty God more intimately and hear Him speak to us personally through His Word.
Meditation on the Word of God can change your life. It takes regular practice to add it to our lives. But once we make meditating on God’s Word a priority, the awesome blessings of a closer relationship with God and the wisdom that comes from knowing His ways are ours.
