SECURITY OF THE BELIEVER
I always put a ‘salvation’ page in all our books, but I won’t with this book because this entire book will be about salvation.
There are two totally different views on the subject of our salvation.
#1. Calvinism: which teaches it is absolutely impossible for a truly saved person to ever be lost. Once saved, always saved. In other words, salvation is unconditional.
#2. Arminianism: which teaches it is possible for a true believer to fall away and finally be lost in Hell. In other words salvation is conditional.
This doctrinal dispute will continue as long as the Church is upon the Earth. What does the Bible teach? Are born again believers secure for eternity? or insecure? Can they be “saved” one day and “lost” the next? Can they be God’s child one minute? and the devil’s child the next?
The entire purpose of this book is to show, by God’s Word, that a TRUE believer is eternally secure, and that believing otherwise is wrong for the following reasons:
It completely changes the meaning of ETERNAL. Eternal means everlasting, never ending, never stopping, endless, permanent, etc. John 3:15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. (KJV) . . . Everyone who believes in Jesus HAS eternal life.
To believe you can lose your salvation is to call Jesus a liar! Jesus is NOT a liar! It twists the meaning of GRACE. The person fails to understand that salvation is completely undeserved! It is a free gift of God! Once it is given, God will never take it back! It’s yours!
We cannot mix GRACE and WORKS. We can never do enough works to attain our salvation.
Man CANNOT KEEP HIMSELF SAVED, any more than he can save himself in the first place.
Just as we can only be born once physically, so too, we can be “born again” only once. Believing we can lose our salvation, is saying we can be born again TIME AFTER TIME.
That is not BIBLICAL. If you rightly understand the Bible, and don’t take verses out of context, you will see that a TRUE believer can never perish. God’s Word consistently tells us that if we are truly “born again” into God’s family we are eternally saved.
To believe that you can lose your salvation is saying that what Christ did on the cross was not enough; and that we must ‘do something,’ thus making salvation a joint effort with Christ. This is absurd according to God’s Holy Word! It denies that salvation takes place at a specific time (the moment one accepts Christ as Saviour), but that it is a PROCESS with a condition; man must fulfill certain requirements. Jesus is the ONLY DOOR and we need enter just ONCE for salvation. God does NOT tell us we must repeatedly go through the Door.
And too, it allows us to “boast” as to what we have done to achieve salvation. Salvation by grace excludes any boasting on our part.
Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. [KJV] . . . Salvation is a FREE GIFT! And last but certainly not least, is PEACE OF MIND. How can anyone have the peace that Jesus offers and believe that they may eventually end up in Hell? This really baffles me!
As you have probably concluded thus far, I absolutely believe in ONCE SAVED, ALWAYS SAVED! If you do not, I will attempt to change your mind in this short booklet, by bringing forth many, many Scripture verses.
Eternal security is to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved (John 1:12-13). It is an instant, complete and eternal Work of God in a sinner when he or she sincerely and truly repents and believes God. If a person TRULY believes in Jesus (don’t try to fool God), your faith will never cease. NO works of any kind can ever save you. Works are a ‘fruit’ of salvation, NOT the ‘root’ of salvation. Salvation is a FREE GIFT because of the grace of God. The believer is accepted by God the Father, in the Beloved (Christ the Son), and totally complete in Him. Christ’s death atoned for every believer’s sins; past, present and future.
When a person is truly saved, he or she does NOT want to sin. Jesus removes that desire. To remain in sin (keep practicing sin), leaves just one question: was that person really saved?
GRACE, What Is It? Chapter 1
GRACE, as we find it in God’s Word, is the free favor of God in salvation. It is the unmerited, unrestricted, ever loving favor of God toward unworthy and condemned sinners.
2 Timothy 1:9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, [KJV] . . . This is a brief summary of the Gospel. God loves us, called us, and sent Christ to die for us. Because of our faith, we have eternal life through faith in Him, for He broke the power of death with His resurrection. We do not deserve to be saved, but God offers us salvation anyway. Our part is simply to believe in Him and accept His offer.
GRACE IS GOD’S FORGIVING MERCY
Romans 11:6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work. [KJV] . . . Do you think God loves you more when you’re good? Do you think God chose you because you deserved it? Do you think some people are so evil and awful that God couldn’t possibly save them? If you, deep down, think like this, you do NOT understand that salvation is by grace; it is a free gift from God. Salvation cannot be earned, not even a little part of it! We can only accept it with a grateful and humble heart, and be thankful and praise Him! God can and will forgive any evil or wickedness you may have done when you TRULY trust Christ. But, again, let me warn you, you may fool those around you, but you will NEVER fool God, for He knows exactly what is in your heart (Luke 16:15; 22:34).
GRACE IS NOT THE LAW
John 1:17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. [KJV]
Law and grace are both conditions of God’s nature that He uses when He deals with us. The law shows us our need for Christ, in that we know we can never fulfill it. Christ Jesus came to highlight God’s purity, truth, mercy, love, and forgiveness. Christ was the only Person ever to fulfill the Law of Moses. He NEVER sinned in any way (Heb.4:5; 1 Peter 1:19; 2:22). When we believe God and accept Christ as Saviour and Lord, God applies the righteousness of His Son to us (sinners). We are then justified in His eyes (declared not guilty in the courts of Heaven) and (born again) into the family of God (John 1:12-13). Once you become a child of God, you are His child forever, just as you are the child of your physical parents, forever! Nothing can change this fact, this truth!
Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. [KJV] . . . The law cannot justify us or help us overcome sin. But grace can! Christ gives us the power to do good rather than evil. He takes away the desire (want) to sin.
GOD’S GRACE IS ETERNAL
Ephesians 1:4-7 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; [KJV] . . . That God “chose us in Him” emphasizes that salvation depends completely on God. We are not saved because we deserve it, but because God is gracious and freely gives us salvation. We did not influence God’s decision to save us in any way, for He chose us “before the foundation of the world.” Can you grasp this thought? Before God created the world, He chose us to be His children! He saved us according to His plan. There is no way we can take credit for our salvation or to allow any room for pride. It is hard to understand how God could accept us vile sinners (Jer. 17:9; Rom.3:10,23), but because we accept Christ, we are holy and blameless in His sight. God chose us, and when we belong to Him through His Son, God looks at us as if we had never sinned. Have you thanked God today for His amazing grace?
GOD’S GRACE IS FREE
Romans 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: [KJV] . . . “Justified” means we are declared not guilty. When a judge declares the defendant not guilty, all the charges are removed from his record. Legally, it is as if the person had never been accused. When God forgives our sins, our slate is wiped clean. From His viewpoint, it is as though we had never sinned, ever. God’s grace is free to all who are willing to believe Him and accept His Son. “Redemption” refers to Christ setting sinners free from the slavery to sin. In the Old Testament, a person could be sold as a slave if he had debts he couldn’t pay. The next of kin could redeem him (buy his freedom). Christ purchased our freedom and the price was His life. He paid a debt He did not owe, because we had a debt we could not pay. Thank You Jesus, thank You, thank You!
GOD’S GRACE IS EXCEEDINGLY RICH
Ephesians 2:7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. [KJV] . . . God’s eternal grace or good-will toward us is the fountain from where all His mercies flow. His love and mercy is great and rich! Every converted sinner is a saved sinner; delivered from sin and God’s wrath. God’s grace that saves is the free, undeserved goodness and favor of God. He saves not by the works of the law, but through faith in Christ.
GOD’S GRACE IS A GIFT
Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. [KJV] . . . When someone gives you a gift, do you say, “How much do I owe you?” No, you say “Thank you.” Yet many times Christians, even after they have been given the gift of salvation, feel obligated to try to work their way to God. Because our salvation and even our faith are gifts, we should be grateful and praise God.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. [KJV] . . . Eternal life is a free gift from God. So, if it is a gift, then it is NOT something we earn, and NOT something that must be paid back. It is absolute foolishness if someone receives a gift given out of love and then offers to pay for it. A gift cannot be purchased by the recipient, for then it is no longer a gift! The right response to a loved one who offers a gift is to gracefully accept it with gratitude. Our salvation is a gift because of the grace of God. He saved us because of His mercy, not because of any righteous things that we have done (Titus 3:5).
GRACE IS UNCONDITIONAL
Romans 3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: [KJV] . . . We are made right in God's sight when we trust Christ to take away our sins. We ALL must be saved this same way, no matter who we are or what we have done. Red, yellow, black or white; an evil, vile person or someone with good moral standards who goes to church all the time. There are NO conditions such as, clean up your act first, then I’ll think about saving you. There is only one way to be declared not guilty; by trusting Jesus to forgive our sins, and make us right with God. It’s the same answer no matter what our background or past behavior. God can change you, if you allow His amazing grace into your life.
GOD’S GRACE IS LIMITLESS
Romans 5:20-21 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord. [KJV] . . .
Sinners separated from God see His law as a ladder, to be climbed to get to God. How often have you tried to climb it, only to fall to the ground every time? Or does the height of the ladder overwhelm you? It is a great relief to see Jesus standing there with open arms to lift you above that ladder of the law, to take you directly to God! And once Jesus lifts you into God’s Presence, you are free to obey . . . out of love, not necessity, and through God’s power, not your own. You know that if you stumble, you will not fall, but instead, be caught and held in Christ’s strong loving arms. The terrors of the law make Gospel comforts ever so sweet. Righteousness that justifies CANNOT be a mixture of sin and holiness. There is no eternal reward without a pure and spotless righteousness, and that can come only from Christ!
If we take ALL sin, of ALL mankind who ever lived, this would be “sin abounding.” But to try to measure GRACE would be impossible! We would have to multiply grace X eternity X God’s omnipotence X deity. This cannot be done! God’s grace is absolutely limitless!
This is grace! The very One, Jesus; who is going to be the Judge, has died in the place of the guilty (us), and has borne our judgment. Now, through the grace of God, He not only delivers the believing sinner from the penalty of death and God’s wrath, but also places him into the family of God, forgives him completely, and justifies him!
You may know that God’s love and grace are limitless even if you are not a believer, but you may not know that unless you believe on the Name of Jesus, God’s Son, as your personal Saviour and Lord, you will never experience that love, that grace, in the salvation of your soul.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BELIEVE?
- To believe means you know that salvation is through Christ alone. Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. [KJV]
- To believe means that if you want to go to Heaven, you must go through Christ. John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. [KJV] . . . Heaven is where the Father is.
- To believe means you know Christ is who He says He is, and will do what He said He will do.
- To believe means you accept what Christ did on the cross; redeeming your soul from Hell and God’s wrath, and completely forgiving you.
- To believe means you must have a personal relationship with Christ; trusting Him as your loyal Friend and Guide in all things.
- To believe means you must obey Christ.
BELIEVERS SHALL NEVER PERISH
John 10:27-30 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. I and my Father are one. [KJV] . . . There are several wonderful realities in these verses:
- Only the “sheep” of Jesus hear and know His voice, and gladly and willingly “follow Him.”
- Jesus gives His sheep “eternal life.” Please remember what ‘eternal’ means; never ending, non-stopping!
- Once you become one of His sheep (John 1:12-13), you will “never perish” (in Hell).
- Once you become one of His sheep (God’s children), NO ONE will ever get us away from Him, ever!
- The Father gave the sheep to Jesus (Ephesians 1:4).
Jesus is claiming Divine power and perfection equally with God the Father. This is the clearest statement of Jesus’ divinity (being God) that He ever made. Jesus and His Father are NOT the same Person, but they are ONE in essence and nature, and in perfect agreement and harmony. Since Jesus is God, we are certainly secure in His Almighty Hands! Jesus protects His people (sheep, Matthew 25:32) from eternal harm. While believers can expect to suffer on Earth physically, Satan cannot harm our souls or take away our eternal life with God. If you choose to follow Jesus, He will give you everlasting safety for your soul.
Luke 21:18 But there shall not an hair of your head perish. [KJV] . . . Jesus is not saying that believers are exempt from physical harm or death during persecutions. Remember that most of the apostles were martyred. Jesus is saying that none of His followers will suffer spiritual or eternal loss. Believers in Jesus are secured for eternal life.
John 3:15-16 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. [KJV]
God provided A Way, so we would not have to suffer eternal agony in Hell. His Way is so simple and easy, that most people pass it by! Only a “few” as the Bible states, choose to believe God. They think they must DO something! They do have to do something!
John 6:28-29 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. [KJV] . . . Believing God is the only WORK God requires of you! By faith, believe in Christ, whom God has sent.
These verses plainly tell us we “shall not perish, but have eternal life” if we simply believe in Him. God does NOT make salvation difficult or confusing. People under the influence of Satan do that. God is not the author of confusion, He wants us to know and understand perfectly what He has in mind for us. Eternal life is through His Son and when we have it, we have it forever!
ONCE . . . FOR ALL Chapter 3
Hebrews 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. [KJV] . . . How many times did Christ die on the cross? ONCE, FOR ALL! God accepted His Sacrifice, completely, for all people. The Sacrifice was indeed sufficient in God’s eyes. Why then do some people think they need to DO more? Christ paid it ALL! We are totally secure if we are “in Him.”
Hebrews 10:10-12 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; [KJV] . . . Here, Christ’s work is contrasted with the work of the Jewish priests. The priests’ work was never finished, so they always had to stand and offer sacrifices; Christ’s Sacrifice (dying in our place) is finished, so He is seated. The priests repeated the sacrifices often; Christ sacrificed ONCE for all. The priest’s sacrifice system couldn’t entirely remove sin but Christ’s sacrifice cleansed us completely, ONCE for all. HE NEED NOT DIE AGAIN!
1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: [KJV] . . . The purpose and end of our Lord’s sufferings was to reconcile us to God, and to bring us eternal life. He (the Man Jesus) was put to death, but He was quickened and raised by the power of the Holy Spirit. Christ does not offer Himself repeatedly for our sins, just once for all! Personally, I think the Catholic mass is blasphemy!
Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. [KJV] . . . If you have been “born again” your salvation is in a very safe place. You are “in Christ” and He never changes! If Christ never changes, then it is impossible for your (or my) salvation to change; for Christ IS our salvation!
2 Timothy 1:12-B . . . For I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. [KJV] . . . Your salvation is in the best of Hands!
We do not always act like God’s children, for we all do things to displease Him; but we ARE God’s children IF we have been “born again” . . . of God (John 1:12-13; 3:3). A child of God can no more be unborn than a child of physical birth! Most people who believe in falling from grace also believe they can be saved again after they fall. IF this were true,
then that would take a ‘third’ birth! The Bible has NOTHING to say about a ‘third’ birth.
John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: [KJV] . . . My sheep hear my voice, and I know them! Jesus KNOWS each and every one of His sheep! He knows us by name! He knows when we sin, not if we sin! When He comes at the Rapture, He will not forget a single solitary one of us! He’ll gather us all in to the “fold.” Our eternal destiny is secure IF we know Christ!
John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. [KJV] . . . IF we “believe on Him” we will NEVER be condemned to Hell, but those who refuse to believe God and what He has to say about His Son, are already condemned! We believe in Christ when we recognize that our own efforts can never bring us salvation and by asking Him to do His work in us. When Jesus talks about unbelievers, He means those who reject or refuse Him completely.
John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. [KJV] . . . IF we “believe on the Son” God grants to us everlasting (eternal) life. IF we refuse to believe God and “believe on His Son” we shall NEVER see eternal life with God in Heaven, but instead, be doomed to an eternal, agonizing Hell. The “wrath of God” is God’s final judgment and rejection of unbelievers. If you put off the choice to follow Christ, you have chosen not to follow Him. This is a fatal decision.
John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. [KJV] . . . “Eternal life” . . . living forever with God . . . begins immediately when you accept Jesus Christ as Saviour. At that very moment, a new life begins in you (2 Cor. 5:17). You still will face physical death (unless you are alive when Jesus comes at the Rapture), but when Christ returns again, your body will be resurrected to live forever (1 Cor. 15).
Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. [KJV] . . . The whole human race is actually on death row, justly condemned for repeatedly breaking God’s holy law. Without Jesus there is no hope! But praise God! He has declared all those “born again” not guilty and has offered us freedom from sin and it’s penalty. “Not guilty” because of Jesus!
Romans 8:32-39 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. [KJV] . . . Do you ever think that because you aren’t good enough, God won’t save you? Do you ever feel as if salvation is for everyone else but you? Then these verses are especially for you. God gave the best He had for you (His Son). He certainly is not going to hold back the gift of salvation! If Christ gave His life for you, He certainly is nott going to turn around and condemn you! He will not withhold anything you need to live for Him. If God justifies us by our belief in Christ, we are secured, forever! Do not confuse your spirit and perplex your thoughts in fruitless, endless doubting, believe on Him who justifies! When God justifies, it’s forever! He will not turn around and say you are to be held accountable for those sins. No trouble or sorrow will ever show any lessening of His love. Nothing can ever separate us from His awesome love, and nothing can take the believer from Him! You are condemned WITHOUT Christ. If you do not know Him as your Saviour, run to Him to save you.
John 6:47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. [KJV] . . . This verse, like John 5:24 is telling us we have eternal life the moment we turn to Christ. Please remember that eternal means eternal, everlasting, forever! If I’m saved for a day or a month or a year, and lose my salvation, I don’t have eternal life. If I’m saved for 100 years, and then lose my salvation, I don’t have eternal life. God promises ETERNAL life. I claim that Promise!
John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. [KJV] . . . Peace in Christ is the only true peace in this world. In Him, and Him alone, can believers (and only believers) have peace. Through Him we have peace with God, and in Him we have peace of mind. Christ has overcome the world by His triumphant victory over death, and when we accept Him into our hearts and lives, we are overcomers. As Christians, we will have tension with an unbelieving world that is “out of sync” with Christ, His gospel, and His people. But on the other hand, we can expect our relationship with Christ to produce peace, joy and comfort in our lives because we are “in sync” with Him. In spite of the inevitable struggles we face, we will never be alone. Jesus will never abandon us, ever, for any reason, once we believe on His Holy name! The victory has already been won, and we can claim the peace of Christ now and in eternity to come.
1 John 2:13-14 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father. I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one. [KJV] . . . John was writing to believers of all ages, calling them “dear children.” He refers to all who have experienced forgiveness through Jesus. The “fathers” are mature in the faith and have a long-standing relationship with Christ. The “young men” had struggled with Satan’s temptations, and won. The “little children” are those who have just learned about Christ and are just beginning their spiritual journey. Each stage of our spiritual life builds on the other, just as do different stages of our physical life. Children learn about Christ, grow in their ability to win battles with temptation. As young adults move from victory to victory as they grow in their relationship with Christ. Older adults, who have known Christ for years, develop wisdom to teach young people, thus starting the cycle all over again. We do NOT stay babies in our physical life, and God does not want us to stay babies in our spiritual life. He expects us to keep our faith in the Lord, and let Him help us to keep overcoming the “wicked one” day after day.
1 John 5:4-5 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? [KJV] . . . These verses are plain and to the point! Only a “born again” believer has the power to “overcome the world.” And once you have that power, you have it FOREVER! The next verse very clearly tells us that.
John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; [KJV] . . . Once a believer has the Holy Spirit, we have access to His power and assistance . . . for ever! God does NOT give us His Spirit one day and yank Him back the next! And something to remember, we are NOT children of God unless we have the Holy Spirit within us! There are some cults who do not believe in the Holy Spirit and His indwelling all believers. They are wrong!
Romans 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. [KJV] . . . God tells it like it is! Truth!
1 John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. [KJV] These two verses so clearly state that the Holy Spirit abides within us, and that the Spirit of God is much greater than “he that is in the world” (the devil). Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ abiding in them, has instead the spirit of the devil (Eph.2:2). The devil is strong, yes, but he cannot compare to the Holy Spirit’s power! If you are a “born again” Christian, you have that awesome power within you, and He will stay with you . . . forever!
Revelation 3:5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. [KJV] . . . Jesus tells us once our name is in the Book of Life, He will NEVER blot it out, NEVER erase it!
WHAT DO WE LOSE WHEN WE SIN?
Enemies of the doctrine of eternal security (once saved, always saved), teach that believing this way encourages a believer to sin. This is NOT so! The Bible teaches exactly the opposite.
Romans 6:1-2 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? (KJV) . . . . Should we continue to live in sin so that God's grace will increase? Stupidity! We have died to sin, so how then can we go on living in it?
We, as God’s children, do NOT keep sinning just so God can show us more and more kindness and forgiveness. We do sin, yes! And we will keep sinning until we receive our new bodies (1 John 3:2). When He shall appear at the Rapture, we shall be like Him, in the respect that then, and only then, we shall no longer sin. There is only one Person ever, to walk this Earth and not sin, and that is Jesus! Some day we will have glorified bodies, like His, and those bodies shall never, ever sin again; for we must have those bodies to enter Heaven (Rev. 21:27).
Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; [KJV] . . . So, we know that according to the Truth of the Bible, we ALL will absolutely sin in some way or another every day we live here on Earth. Do we lose salvation when we sin? NO! Absolutely not! If you are a “born again” believer you CANNOT lose your salvation! But let me warn you, you DO have much to lose IF you sin and do not confess it and get rid of it! Consider the following:
We lose fellowship with God.
Isaiah 59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. [KJV] . . . Most people do not want to hear that God will not hear their prayers, but it is absolute Truth! No matter how much you don’t want to hear it, you cannot change the fact that it is God’s Truth! When a believer sins and does not confess that sin, your fellowship with God is broken. He turns away from your prayers, your cries. That unconfessed sin is like an unmovable brick wall between you and God. What is the difference between sin, iniquitiy and transgression? ALL need to be made right with God!
SIN: moral failure, missing the mark.
INIQUITIES: wicked, unjust, unrighteous acts.
TRANSGRESSIONS: deliberate acts of rebellion.
We lose the joy of our salvation.
Psalm 51:12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. [KJV] . . . We lose the JOY of our salvation . . . NOT our salvation! Because our unconfessed sin separates us from God and His awesome Presence, we cannot be happy. David was a sinner, like everyone. He did some horrible things. But when he went to God with a humble and broken heart, and confessed his sins, God forgave him completely. David did NOT lose his salvation, just the JOY of that salvation! David was much loved by God, in that he is the only person in the Bible that God declares, David was a man after God’s own heart (1 Sam.13:14; Acts 13:22). God did chastise and punish David for his sins, but when David truly repented, God forgave him. David never lost his salvation! We will not lose ours.
We grieve the Holy Spirit. Any time we grieve the Spirit of Christ (God), we lose!
Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. [KJV] . . . We grieve the Holy Spirit in many ways: unwholesome language, bitterness, blasphemy, anger, jealousy, bad temper, brawling, slander, malicious thoughts, bad attitudes toward others, etc., etc. We should be loving, caring and forgiving. We should always act in love toward our brothers and sisters in Christ, doing to them as you would want them to do unto you (Mat.7:12).
We lose our peace with God.
John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. [KJV] . . . The Holy Spirit gives us deep and lasting peace. This peace is confident assurance in any situation. We have no need to fear the present or the future. When we have unconfessed sin in our lives, we lose this marvelous deep down feeling of peace. Sin, fear, uncertainty, doubt and numerous other forces are at war within us. When we give in to them, it is sin. Trust God in all circumstances.
We lose rewards that we could have had.
2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. [KJV] . . . Even though eternal life is a free gift given on the basis of God’s grace (Ephes. 2:8-9), each of us will still be judged by Christ at the Judgment Seat. We will either receive rewards for how we have lived, or lose them. Just because we have God’s gracious gift of salvation, does not mean we are not responsible for faithful obedience to Him. ALL Christians must give account for how they have lived (Matthew 16:27; Romans 14:10-12; 1 Cor. 3:10-15). Our life should be devoted to Christ, for when we are judged, only the things we do for Christ will count. There are many today (hypocrites) who show the worthlessness of their professed faith and love, by living only to themselves and the world! Jesus wants us not only to talk the talk, but walk the walk! Lip service is worth -0- in the eyes of God.
When we sin, what does the Bible say to do?
1 John 1:8-9 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. [KJV] . . . Confession of our sins frees us to enjoy our personal fellowship with Christ. But confession must come from a humble and broken heart; you must be truly sorry for what you have done, or you are not fooling anyone but yourself. Some Christians feel so guilty that they confess the same sins over and over again. When God forgives you, He forgets that sin (Ps. 103:12; Mic.7:18-19: Heb.8:12). Other Christians believe God forgives them when they confess their sins to Him, but if they died with unconfessed sins, they would be forever lost. This belief is wrong! God wants to forgive us, and He will! He allowed His beloved Son to die just so He could offer us pardon. When we come to Christ, He forgives all the sins we ever committed in the past, and all those future sins we will ever commit. We don’t need to confess the sins of our past all over again, and we don’t need to fear God’s rejection if we don’t keep our slate perfectly clean.
We must continue to confess our sins, but failure to do so will not make us lose our salvation. Our relationship with Christ is secure, but our sins move us away from Him. True confession also involves something else: our determination not to continue in that sin.
If God has forgiven us for our sins because of Christ’s death, WHY must we confess our sins? In admitting our sins:
- we agree with God that our is sin wrong and that we are willing to turn from it,
- we don’t wish to conceal our sins from Him (and ourselves), and
- we recognize our tendency to sin and rely on His power to overcome it.
Why Christians Fall
We give in to our weakness (lack of self-control)
We place worldly (temporary) things above eternal things.
We take God’s blessings for granted.
We allow sorrow and disappointment overcome us. Salvation cannot be lost . . . BUT . . . many Passages in Scripture have a condition attached to them such as: faith, love, obedience. If God did not attach such conditions to salvation and security, it would seem as though the Bible taught that all people everywhere are saved. Unbelievers will not accept the conditions God requires to be His child.
Remember, we cannot lose our salvation but we certainly can lose wonderful blessings God gives the faithful ones.
- Irreplaceable time.
- Peace of mind.
- Joy in our heart.
- Self control.
- Usefulness to God.
- Communication with God.
- Relationships with God, His Son, and other believers.
- Even our physical life.
- Approval of God.
- All the fruits of the Spirit.
- Eternal rewards at Judgment Seat.
We all ‘backslide’ at times, some of us worse than others. When we do, we can surely expect God to take us to the woodshed (chasten us). He chastens His children to bring them to their senses, even to the point of physical death; the point being “That the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus” (1 Cor.5:5) AND “That we should not be condemned with the world” (1 Cor.11:32).
1 Corinthians 11:31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. (KJV) . . . IF we would examine ourselves, we would not come under God's judgment. We have God’s Word and God’s Spirit to teach us right from wrong. Let us determine what is wrong in our lives and cast it away, so that God will not have to “chasten” us. I do not want to lose even one of God’s awesome blessings, and I surely do not want to be chastised by Him. What about you?
FACTS ABOUT BELIEVERS
We will NEVER perish in Hell because:
- We’re united with Christ.
Ephesians 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. (KJV) . . . We are now in union with Christ Jesus, who used to be far away. We have been brought near by the precious Blood of Christ (1 Pet.1(18-19).
John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: (KJV) . . . To ALL who believed Him and accepted Him, Jesus gave the right to become children of God.
- God makes us a new person.
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (KJV) . . . When we believe God, we are “in Christ,” meaning that we are new persons (from the inside out). We are not the same anymore, for a new life has begun!
- We are “justified” in God’s eyes.
Romans 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: [KJV] . . . God, in His kindness, declares that we are righteous when we accept what Christ Jesus did on the cross for us, when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.
- We are baptized into the Body of Christ.
1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. (KJV) . . . Some born again Believers are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves and some are free, but ALL have been baptized into Christ's body by one Spirit, and we have all received the same Spirit of Christ (Rom.8:9-10).
- We are indwelt by God’s Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? (KJV) . . . We should understand that our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? We belong to God.
- We are ‘sealed” by the Holy Spirit.
Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, [KJV] . . . We became God's people when we heard the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, that brought us salvation. When we believed in Christ, God put His seal of ownership on us by giving us the Holy Spirit He had promised.
- God makes us citizens of Heaven.
John 14:2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. [KJV] . . . Jesus tells us that there is plenty of room in His Father’s home. If this were not so, Jesus would never have said it! He has gone to prepare a place for all who are in God’s family.
- God makes us “joint heirs” with His Son.
Romans 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. [KJV] . . . All God’s true children will possess the blessings that He keeps aside for His people, and we will also possess with Christ what God has kept for Him; for if we share Christ's suffering, we will also share His glory.
- We are “sanctified” (set apart for God) when we accept Christ as our Saviour and Lord.
1 Corinthians 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. [KJV] . . . Some of us were vile sinners before we came to Christ. But we were cleansed; we were made holy; we were made right with God by calling on the Holy Name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. Thank YOU Jesus!
- We become “saints” sacred, pure, blameless, and holy in God’s eyes because of the righteousness of Christ. Saints is another word for God’s people.
1 Corinthians 1:2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours: [KJV]
Romans 8:27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. [KJV] . . . Our prayers will be heard by God, whereas the prayers of unbelievers will not be heard.
John 9:31 Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth. [KJV] . . . We ALL are sinners, but this verse is speaking about unsaved sinners. A ‘saved’ sinner is one who loves God and gives Him His rightful place, one who is a “worshipper of God.” But let me warn you, God will not hear the prayers of His children if they are holding on to some sin and not repenting and confessing it. Get rid of all known sin by confessing it to God (1 John 1:9).
Deuteronomy 31:18 And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods. [KJV] . . . Unbelievers turn to many ‘gods.’ A god is anything or anyone that takes the place of our Almighty Creator God. It can be your spouse, your child, money, possessions, pleasure, etc.
Isaiah 59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. [KJV] . . . SIN separates a person from God! I think that the worst sin in God’s eyes is UNBELIEF! That is why God refuses to hear so-called prayers from those who refuse to believe God and accept His Son.
So, how can an unbeliever ever get God to hear their prayers? A humble prayer of repentance and acceptance of Christ is always heard by God. When an unbeliever makes that prayer, he or she is no longer an unbeliever!
EVIDENCE OF ETERNAL SECURITY
There are three ‘kinds’ of security:
SURE but not SECURE.
I think that there are millions of unbelievers today who are absolutely sure in their minds and hearts that they will go to Heaven when they die. Most in my physical family are in this category. It really saddens me to know that unless they make a turn around, believe, and accept Christ, they will end up in Hell. One whom I dearly love, goes to a church that teaches good works can save you. And the doctrine of everyone will go to Heaven is the doctrine of the devil! No where in God’s Holy Word does it teach this. Not one place! But this doctrine is very well accepted today because no one wants to go to Hell, no one even wants to think about Hell! So, people find churches that teach what they want to hear, even if it is NOT the Truth of the Bible.
2 Timothy 4:3-4 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. (KJV) . . . We are living in THAT time! People will no longer listen to right teaching. They follow their own desires and hunt for teachers who will tell them whatever they want to hear. They reject the TRUTH of God’s Word and follow commandments of men (Mat.15:9).
SECURE but not SURE.
These are “born again” believers who have trusted Christ as their Saviour and are held firmly in His protective and loving Hand.
John 10:27-29 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. [KJV] . . . But when failure (sin) occurs, guilt floods over them, heart and soul. They become confused. They begin to think they were never saved in the first place. They are not sure they have eternal life. This is nothing but doubt . . . and doubt is a sin. Doubt is the exact opposite of faith and trust. Doubt is of the devil! He does not want you to have peace in your life. When you become unsure of your salvation, Satan grins with glee. He has you where he wants you. “Submit to God, resist the devil and he will flee.” (James 4:7).
SURE and SECURE.
These are people who have accepted Christ as their personal Saviour. They continue to walk and grow in their new life, proving by the way they live that they have been “born again.”
When we are saved (born again), we have something that the world can’t give and something the world can’t take away.
You were reconciled to God.
2 Cor. 5:18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; [KJV]
You were bought by God at a great price.
1 Peter 1:18-19 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: [KJV]
You were freed from the law.
Romans 8:1-2 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. [KJV]
You were declared righteous.
Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: [KJV]
You were set apart (sanctified) for God.
John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. [KJV]
You were glorified.
Romans 8:30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. [KJV]
You were made an heir of God.
Romans 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. [KJV]
You were forgiven ALL your sins.
Ephesians 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. [KJV]
You were indwelt by the Holy Spirit.
Romans 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. [KJV]
You were indwelt by God the Father.
Ephesians 4:6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. [KJV]
You were indwelt by Jesus Christ.
Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. [KJV]
You were given a spiritual gift to edify the church.
1 Corinthians 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. (KJV) . . . A spiritual gift is given to each of us as a means of building the church.
Ephesians 4:7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. (KJV) . . . He has given each one of us a special gift according to the bounty of Christ.
You were made a part of the Body of Christ (the church).
1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. [KJV]
You were chosen by God.
Ephesians 1:3-4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: [KJV]
You were placed “in Christ.”
Ephesians 2:5-6 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: [KJV]
You were adopted into the family of God.
Ephesians 1:5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, [KJV]
You were made secure when you accepted Christ.
[KJV]
We are safe and secure in the arms of Jesus, our Saviour.
Romans 8:38-39 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. [KJV] Remarkable and very comforting words!
You were given peace.
John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. [KJV]
Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. [KJV] You cannot have peace in your heart and soul if you think you might wind up in Hell. Once saved, always saved!
You were given comfort.
2 Corinthians 1:3-7 Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ. And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation. And our hope of you is stedfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation. [KJV]
John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; [KJV]
You were given contentment.
1 Timothy 6:6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. [KJV]
You became a new person.
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. [KJV]
You were given power to overcome evil.
1 John 2:14 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one. (KJV)
You were freed from condemnation.
Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. (KJV)
You were made a “saint” by Almighty God.
1 Corinthians 1:2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours: [KJV] . . . “Saint” means sacred, physically pure, morally blameless, devoted to God, holy. Only God can make a person a “saint.” It happens the moment you truly believe and accept Christ as your Saviour and Lord.
Since the Holy Spirit lives in you, you will be delivered from temptation (1 Cor.10:13), simply by allowing Him to work in your life. You can cope with daily struggles with the strength of Christ (Phil.4:13, John 15:5). Remember, once you receive the Holy Spirit, He is your abiding Companion “forever” (John 14:16; 2 John 2). Once you accept Jesus into your life, ALL the above things mentioned in this chapter were done for you. We are indeed exceptionally privileged to be the children of God.
1 John 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. (KJV) . . . See how very much our heavenly Father loves us . . . He allows us to be called His children, and we really are! But the people who belong to this world don't know God, so they don't understand that we really are his children. We are safe in Him!
VERSES THAT CONFUSE PEOPLE
John 15:1-6 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. [KJV] . . . This parable of Jesus is NOT speaking about salvation, but fruit bearing. “Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away.” “In Me” means “in Christ.” There are only two groups of people in the world; those who are “in Christ” (believers) and those who are NOT in Christ (unbelievers)!
If a true believer does not bear fruit to the glory of God; if he (or she) does not allow the Holy Spirit to work freely in their lives, God will take that “branch” away (from the place of fruit bearing); possibly God may even take that person home prematurely. This Passage is not about salvation, but the result of salvation (fruit). What is the “fruit” of which Jesus talks? I really do not think “fruit” here means soul winning (as some believe), although soul winning is the by-product of fruit bearing. I truly think “fruit” here is the “fruit of the Spirit.”
Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: . . . [KJV] These are character traits of Jesus, which we as God’s children need desperately, and they can be produced only by the Holy Spirit; by us allowing Him to work in us. Unless we “bear much fruit” we are not living a life that is pleasing to God, nor are we living according to His will.
Verse 6 states: “If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.” If we do not receive daily nourishment from the “true Vine” (Christ), we (the branches) will indeed wither away, and produce no good fruit or works of any kind.
1 Corinthians 3:15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. [KJV] . . . If a believer is unfruitful; if that person is unfaithful to our precious Lord’s service, ALL of his (or her) works will be totally burned up at the Judgment Seat of Christ. They will make it through the Judgment by the ‘skin of their teeth’ but they will receive no reward. This verse tells us their soul is safe (they will be saved) because they are “in Christ.” We must remember that only what we do for the cause of Christ will stand; all else will be burned up! We all need to check ourselves out . . . are we living a life that is pleasing to God?
Hebrews 10:26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, [KJV] . . . This verse torments many Christians. They think there is no hope for them, that they will be eternally damned because they have willingly and willfully sinned against Almighty God. This verse is speaking to Jews (Hebrews) who continued to offer blood sacrifices in the temple. The Sacrifice of Christ’s death on the cross had been fulfilled . . . ONCE, for all! Hebrews 10:10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. [KJV]
To continue to offer blood sacrifices for sin, which had been satisfied by Christ was a fearful and horrendous act. Christ paid it all! There is no need to offer more sacrifices! The writer is telling the Hebrews not to look to the temple any longer, for God is no longer looking for any more sacrifices for sin. God accepted completely the work of His Son on the cross. If anyone rejects the Truth of Christ’s death for the sins of the world (you and me), there is NO other sacrifice for sin available anywhere, for there is NO other way to come to God. To continue to offer sacrifices (of any kind) for sin, means you are sinning willfully. The Blood of Christ is extremely precious to God the Father. It is the nearest and dearest thing to His Heart, and it is the ONLY thing that can save you from His wrath and sin’s penalty. If you reject that Blood, there is NO other way to be saved. That is the clear and simple meaning of this verse.
Hebrews 6:4-6 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. [KJV] . . . These verses refer to people who ‘profess’ to be Christians, not those who ‘possess’ Christ in their heart. They were enlightened, they tasted and they were convicted by the Holy Spirit, but they fell away because they were never saved in the first place. These people are like the seed that fell onto “stony places” (Matthew 13:3-9); the ground is rocky with very little earth so it has no depth. They receive the Word very warmly and emotionally at first, but at the first sign of persecution or troubles, they turn away from Jesus.
I think the Passage above proves it is impossible for a saved person to be lost! If a person were saved . . . then lost, it would be impossible for that person to ever be saved again. “It is impossible . . . if they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance.”
Hebrews 6:9 But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak. (KJV) . . . I think this verse proves that Passage is not speaking of true believers! This shows they never had a true “born again” experience.
2 Peter 2:20-22 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire. [KJV] . . . Peter is speaking about false prophets (see verse 1), NOT saved people. It sounds as if these people came very close to knowing Christ . . . but that’s NOT good enough! We must become His “sheep” (John 10:27-29) and NOT remain “dogs” who return to their “vomit.” These apostates had a head knowledge of Christ, they know the Truth but have no love for that Truth. There are millions like that today.
If a person hears or reads the Truth of the Gospel, and rejects it, it would be better if they had never known the right way, than to know it and then reject it. God will judge them severely.
Peter calls false teachers “dogs.” Proverbs 26:11 As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly. (KJV) . . . He also calls them “pigs.” You can wash a pig, but the minute you turn it loose, it will go right back to its mud hole! Some people get very ‘religious’ but inside they have the heart of a pig . . . they love that dirty mud hole!
CHECKLIST FOR ASSURANCE
Why do Christians backslide? There are several reasons why we, as God’s children sin and backslide:
- We give in to our weaknesses. We simply do not exercise self-control. We should allow the Spirit to produce this “fruit” in us!
- We place more importance on worldly (temporal) things that on heavenly (eternal) things.
- We take God’s blessings for granted.
- We allow sorrow, disappointment and problems overcome us.
Signs of a backslider.
- No interest in Christian fellowship.
- No desire to attend church.
- No personal or family devotions (prayers).
- No desire to study God’s Word.
- No burden for others.
- No spiritual sensitivity (no hating evil).
Facts about backsliders.
They can expect chastening.
Hebrews 12:5-7 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? [KJV]
They may die prematurely.
1 Corinthians 11:30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. (KJV) . . . This verse is talking about participating in the Lord’s Supper (Communion) unworthily. If you are not ‘right’ with God, do NOT take the Lord’s Supper.
They should be fully restored to fellowship.
2 Corinthians 2:7-8 So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow. 8 Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him. (KJV) . . . If we do not forgive and comfort Him/her, he/she may not be able to recover. When a backslider truly repents, receive him (or her) back to your fellowship. Let the love of Christ shine through you, to this person. Do onto others! (Matthew 7:12)
Galatians 6:1 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. [KJV] . . . There is always great danger in not wanting to restore a backslider. Satan sees to this! Sometimes those who are “spiritual” judge too harshly. They would rather criticize, condemn and gossip about him (or her). “I would never have done that,” they may say; when all the while they may be doing something as bad or worse themselves. We as Christians must be very careful.
Matthew 7:2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. [KJV] . . . Evaluate yourself!
Answer yes or no to the following:
_____ I believe the Bible is our Guide to salvation and eternal life.
_____ I believe the Bible when it tells me I am a sinner. Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and
come short of the glory of God; [KJV]
_____ I believe the Bible when it states the penalty for sin is eternal separation from God.
2 Thessalonians 1:8-9 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; [KJV]
_____ I believe Jesus is the Son of God who died on the cross for my sin. 1 Corinthians 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; [KJV]
1 John 5:11-12 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. [KJV]
_____ I believe that Jesus rose from the grave and is able to save me.
Romans 4:25 Who wasdelivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. [KJV]
Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. [KJV]
If you answered “yes” to all these statements, you either have eternal life, or you can have it, for it is readily available to you. If you are not yet “born again” into the family of God, the Bible tells you what to do:
Know in your heart that you are a sinner.
Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; (KJV)
Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (KJV)
Know in your heart that nothing you can do will save you.
Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; (KJV) . . . He saved us, not because of the good things we did, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins and gave us a new life through the Holy Spirit.
Repent, which means do a complete turn-around. Turn from a self-centered life, full of sin, to one that looks to Jesus.
Luke 13:3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. [KJV]
Confess your need for a Saviour.
Romans 10:9-10 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. (KJV)
. . . Don’t be ashamed of Jesus! You don’t want Him to be ashamed of you (Mark 8:38).
Believe what God states about His Son.
John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: [KJV]
Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. [KJV]
1 John 5:11-12 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. (KJV) . . . Do you believe this?
Receive the Gift of salvation.
Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. [KJV] . . . You can never ‘grow’ into being a Christian! You can never do enough ‘good’ things to become a Christian. Your name on the church roll, nor your church attendance will never make you a Christian. Belonging to a certain denomination will never make you a Christian. You must be born into God’s family by faith. When you believe God’s Word and receive His Son into your heart and life, then, and only then, are you a Christian. Once you are in the family of God, THEN you will grow as a Christian. Once you make a commitment to Christ, He makes a commitment to you! He gives you eternal life. You are saved! You are safe and secure forever! We must then tell others of Christ and the wonders of salvation. “Go ye therefore.”
Once His child; His child forever!
What About Baptism?
When you turn to Christ Jesus by faith, and accept Him into your heart and life, you are baptized into the family of God by the Holy Spirit. This is spiritual baptism performed by the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. [KJV] . . . It does not matter what color we are, it does not matter what race we are, it does not matter what culture we have known, we all are baptized into “one body” (the Body of Christ), that being the one and only true church. The TRUE church is NOT denominations. It is being “born again” into God’s family. Only “born again” believers make up the TRUE church!
Once you have opened your heart to Jesus (Rev.3:20), you should by all means be baptized (water baptism). Water baptism (physical) is an outward display of what has happened in the heart of the believer; it is a sign of your repentance, showing you take a stand with Jesus. Water baptism is not necessary for salvation, but it reveals our submission to Christ. Water baptism also demonstrates our willingness to live God’s way. Jesus said it was important (Matthew 28:19).
Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. [KJV] . . . Immersion was the usual form of baptism in the early church. New Christians were completely “buried” in water. This method of baptism symbolizes the death and burial of the old way of life. Coming up out of the water symbolizes being resurrected to a new life with Christ. Our old, sinful life is dead and buried. We can enjoy our wonderful new life with Jesus.
Galatians 3:27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. [KJV]
When we are baptized, we are united with Christ. We “put on Christ” in place of our old sinful nature controlled by the devil. We throw those old “filthy rags” away (Is.64:6), and put on the clean righteous garment of Christ.
Colossians 3:2-3 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. [KJV] . . . “Ye are dead” means we should have much desire for worldly pleasures and possessions as a dead person would have. A true Christian’s real home is where Christ lives (John 14:2-3). This truth should give us
a different viewpoint on how we live our lives here on Earth. To “set your affection on things above” means to look at your life from God’s perspective; seek His will and His desires, not yours. We gain the proper perspective on material possessions when we see God’s view of them. The more we consider the world around us as God does, the more we will live in harmony with Him. Don’t become too attached to what is only temporary. “Hid with Christ” means we are safe with Him.
John 6:28-29 Then said they unto him,What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. [KJV]
