Great Drops of Blood
In Jesus’ Agony in the Garden

Hematidrosis (also called hematohidrosis or hemidrosis or blood sweat. From Greek haima/haimatos αἷμα, αἵματος, blood; hidrōs ἱδρώς blood) is a very rare condition in which a human sweats blood. . . . . . . . . . .https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hematidrosis

Signs and symptoms of Hematidrosis.
Blood usually oozes from the forehead, nails, umbilicus, and other skin surfaces. In addition, oozing from mucocutaneous surfaces causing nosebleeds, blood stained tears, and vicarious menstruation are common. The episodes may be proceeded by intense headache and abdominal pain and are usually self-limiting. In some conditions, the secreted fluid is more dilute and appears to be blood-tinged, while others may have darker bright red secretions resembling blood.

Investigations
Investigation such as platelets count, platelet aggregation test, coagulation profile and skin biopsy reveal no abnormalities and direct light microscopy of fluid demonstrates presence of normal red blood cells. Investigations also failed to show any vasculitis or skin appendages (i.e. sweat glands, sebaceous glands and hair follicles) abnormalities.

Treatment
The condition is very rare but there are reports in medical literature of successful treatment with beta blockers with significant reduction in the frequency of spontaneous blood oozing. The successful use of beta blockers supports the theory that the condition is induced by stress and anxiety yet this etiology is not established yet as the high prevalence of stress and anxiety in the modern era did not change the incidence of this extremely rare disease, suggesting that other co-abnormality also play a key role in this disease. Atropine sulfate transdermal patches have also been used successfully.

Causes
The actual cause of this phenomenon is not certain. Some scientists speculate that it happens when a person is under extreme stress.

In Religion
The New Testament clearly indicates that Jesus experienced hematidrosis before His Crucifixion, during the Agony in the Garden.
Luke 22:44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. (KJV)

Why did Jesus sweat Blood in the Garden of Gethsemane?

The night before Christ Jesus was crucified, He prayed, long and hard, in the Garden of Gethsemane.
Luke 22:44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. (KJV)
Our precious Lord Jesus was in such terrible agony. WHY? Because Jesus KNEW what was coming! Jesus IS God, and He KNEW exactly what was going to happen at the cross. God is omniscient (all-knowing)! He KNEW before He consented to come to Earth, before He left Heaven, what would happen. WHY did He come? Because of His love for us! I don’t know about you, but I simply CANNOT comprehend such love as this! He did NOT have to leave Heaven, to come to Earth to die a horrendous death on the cross. He could have said NO! I am SO grateful that He loved me that much that He came.

His sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. Hematidrosis is a rare, but very real, medical condition where the sweat will contain blood. The sweat glands are surrounded by tiny blood vessels. These vessels can constrict and then dilate to the point of rupture where the blood will then effuse into the sweat glands. The cause of this condition is extreme anguish. Consider some Scripture verses:
Matthew 26:38 Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. (KJV)
Mark 14:34 And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch. (KJV)
John 12:27 Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour. (KJV)

The intense anguish and sorrow Jesus felt was very clear. Since He is God, Christ knew.
John 18:4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? (KJV)
He knew in full detail, ALL the events that would follow soon after He was betrayed by one of His very own disciples. He knew He would undergo several trials where all of the witnesses against Him would lie. He also knew that many who had welcomed Him as the Messiah only days earlier would now be screaming for His crucifixion. Luke 23:23 And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed. (KJV)
He also knew He would be flogged nearly to the point of death before they pounded the iron spikes into His flesh. He knew the prophetic words of Isaiah spoken seven centuries earlier that He would be beaten so badly that He would be “disfigured beyond that of any man” and “beyond human likeness” (Isaiah 52:14). Certainly, these things factored into His great anguish and sorrow, causing Him to sweat drops of blood.

And there was more. Crucifixion was considered to be the most painful and torturous method of execution ever invented and was used on the most despised and wicked people. The pain was so horrific, that a word was made up to help explain it . . . excruciating . . . which literally means from the cross. From His arrest in the garden until the time our Lord stated: John 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. (KJV) . . . Scripture records only one time where Jesus cried out in a loud voice. Matthew 27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? (KJV)

As our sinless Saviour bore the weight of the world’s sins on His shoulders, His Father must have looked away, since His eyes are too pure to look on evil. Hab. 1:13 Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he? (KJV)
When God the Father turned away from OUR sins that Jesus bore on that cross, the Suffering Servant cried out Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? Matthew 27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? (KJV) . . . The SPIRITUAL pain of this feeling of abandonment was no doubt much more great than the intense physical pain the Lord endured on our behalf. Psalm 22:1 My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? (KJV)

THOSE THREE DARK HOURS

When Jesus hung on that cross, without ev’n one friend,
Those three hours of darkness, I cannot comprehend!
‘Twas a private time, between the Father and Son,
When my sin debt was paid, and Christ’s battle was won!

There is NO way, I can comprehend Jesus’ love,
Coming to Earth to die, leaving Heaven above!
He left the comfort of Heav’n’s safety, to endure great agony,
For the likes of a nobody, like sinful me!

NO earthly mortal, this kind of love could possess,
We are filled way too much, with worldly wickedness.
We are blessed indeed, to access this kind of love,
In this evil, immoral world, of push and shove!

In those three hours of darkness, Christ took on my sins,
The devil was jubilant, he thought he would win!
But it was Christ Jesus, who had the victory,
In those three hours of darkness; that Godly mystery!

Jesus paid my full sin debt, in those dark three hours,
Ne’er did He doubt, fear, hesitate, waver or cower!
He tolerated all, that agony and pain,
Ne’er did He protest, object, grumble or complain.

The suffering that He endured, for you and for me,
Was love indescribable, that set our souls free!
Jesus’ love surpasses all, that we could ever know,
We’re privileged indeed, that on us His love does flow!

Have you e’er considered, those three hours of darkness?
When our precious Saviour, brought us such great success?
Have you thanked Him, for providing the only Way,
That we might access, Heav’n’s glorious beauty one day?

All forsook Him: (Mat.26:31,54-56; Mk.14:27,50-52; Jn.16:32; 18:8-9; 2 Tim.4:16; Ps.38:11) Darkness: (Mat.27:45; Mk.15:25,33-34; Lk.23:44-45) Love of Christ. Her seed: Ps.132:11; Isa.7:14; Jer.31:22; Mic.5:3; Mat.1:23,25; Lk.1:32-35,76; Gal.4:4). Gift Of God: (Mat.7:11; Jn.4:10; 6:32; Acts 8:20;  15:11; Rom.5:15,18; 6:23; 8:32; 11:29; 1 Cor.7:7; 2 Cor.9:15; Eph.2:8; 2 Tim.1:6; 1 Jn.4:9; 5:11)

That this general darkness was totally supernatural is evident that it happened at the Passover, which was celebrated ONLY at the full moon, a time in which it was impossible for the sun to be eclipsed, natural eclipses happening only at the time of the new moon.

Luke 22:64 And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee? (KJV) . . . Were YOU there? I was!

WERE YOU THERE??

He came from Heav’n, many years ago,
To this Earth, for blessings to bestow.
The greatest blessing He e’er did give,
He died for us all, that we might live.

As our Saviour struggled to that hill,
Death awaited Him; for they would kill.
Such an innocent One, and so pure,
On that Cross, OUR death, He did endure.

Were you there? Those many years ago?
As His precious Blood from Him did flow?
For the sins of the world, He did die,
He died that we might live; you and I.

Were you there? as He cried in agony?
“My God, why have you forsaken me?”
On OUR sins, God had turned His back,
But Christ persever’d in that time so black.

I was there; MY sins put Him on that tree,
My precious Saviour, did die for ME.
He paid the price, only He could pay,
That all who believe, will go Heav’n’s way.

GREAT DROPS OF BLOOD

Luke 22:44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. (KJV)
And being in an agony . . . in conflict with the devil, who some say now appeared visibly to Jesus, in a horrible form. After Jesus’ temptations in the wilderness, Satan left Jesus for a season (Lk.4:13), until another opportunity would come, as now, and now the prince of this world (Jn.14:30) came to Him; and attacked Him in the garden, where the first start on His human nature was made. Now the battle between the two combatants, the serpent, and the seed of the woman began.
He prayed more earnestly . . . Jesus repeated the words He had said before with greater eagerness and persistence, with fervor of Spirit, with strong crying, and tears to Him that was able to save Him from death (Heb.5:7).
And his sweat was, as it were, great drops of blood falling to the ground . . . this account of Christ's bloody sweat is given only by Luke, who being a physician, as is thought, recorded things which fit in to his profession. That it is not mentioned by the other Gospel writers is no unusual thing with them, for one records that which is not in the others.
This sweat was, as it were, great drops of blood is a medical term called hematohidrosis.  Around the sweat glands, there are many blood vessels in a net-like form. Under the pressure of great stress the vessels tighten. Then as the anxiety passes “the blood vessels dilate to the point of rupture. The blood goes into the sweat glands. As the sweat glands are producing a lot of sweat, it pushes the blood to the surface, and it comes out as droplets of blood mixed with sweat. It seems that the intention of Luke is to clearly convey the idea that Jesus’ sweat was like drops of blood and was colored with blood from pure blood.
