The Fruits of the Holy Spirit
Galatians 5:22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. (KJV)
This Scripture verse tells you that God the Father wants to convey and impart nine specific fruits of the Holy Spirit into our personalities.
God wants all of us to enter into a true sanctification process with Him (Jn.17:17, 19; 1 Cor.6:11), so that He can begin the process of molding, shaping and transforming us into the express image of His Son Jesus Christ (Rom.8:29). He wants to make us into a better and more holy people. He wants to transform us by the renewing of our minds (Rom.12:2). He wants to put right things into our thought process.
In the “Sanctification,” I gave you the specific verses from Scripture that showed you that it is by the power of the Holy Spirit that this sanctification process is done with you in this life. However, you will not be a passive robot in all of this. You have to be willing to work in cooperation with the Holy Spirit once He begins to start this sanctification process within you.
If you really want to start off right, think and meditate on some of the more positive, godly qualities God would really like for us to be interwoven into our personality. The nine specific godly qualities of the fruit of the Spirit is an excellent study on which to meditate.
When God the Father deliberately isolates and sets out nine precise qualities that will come directly from His Holy Spirit . . . it is my opinion that He really wants you know how extremely important these nine specific fruits are.
These fruits are major fruits and qualities that are come direct from Almighty God Himself . . . and every TRUE Christian should do their utmost best to work with the Holy Spirit (God) in receiving all nine of these fruits worked into their personality.
Galatians 5:22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. (KJV) . . . Consider this:
#1. The word “Spirit” is with a capital “S” . . . meaning these nine fruits come only from the Holy Spirit, NOT from our power.
#2. We can rely on God’s love, God’s peace, God’s joy, God’s patience, God’s gentleness, God’s goodness, God’s faithfulness, God’s meekness and God’s self-control start to be conveyed into our personality as soon as we are baptized by the Spirit. Baptism by the Holy Spirit: (Rom.6:3-5; 1 Cor.12:13; Mat.3:11; Mk.1:8; Lk.3:16; Jn.1:33). The fruit of the Spirit is God’s divine attributes and personality qualities that will start to move into the core of our personality as soon as we become God’s child (Jn.1:12-13; 3:3-8; Rom.5:1-10; 8:9,14; 2 Cor. 6:17-18; Gal.3:26; 4:6; 2 Pet.1:4; 1 Jn.3:1).
#3. God the Father Himself allows us to share in a part of His divine nature by allowing His Holy Spirit to transmit and impart these nine divine qualities right up into our soul and personality! . . . Do you really appreciate and comprehend that all these marvelous fruits come directly from the Holy Spirit (God)? http://www.hisservants.org/books_our_awesome_triune_god.html
I will bring each fruit separately.
*****LOVE: Unselfish, compassionate concern for another; brotherly concern; the object of brotherly concern or affection. My interpretation of love = care, concern and compassion.
Love is a self-denying, self-sacrificing, Christ-like love which is the foundation of all the other graces of God. Love is NOT sexual lust! Love is unselfish, loyal and benevolent concern for the well-being of another. http://www.hisservants.org/books_god's_kind_of_love.html
Our loving God holds a high esteem for His children and we, as His children (1 Jn.3:1) should hold a high regard for Him and His people.
It is very important for us to cling closely to the Vine (Christ Jesus, Jn.15:1), and His Spirit (Rom.8:9), if we really want the Holy Spirit to manifest these fruits in our personality.
The fruits come directly from the Holy Spirit, but we must do our part or things will not change.
It is our job to start to walk with the Spirit! Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. (KJV) Galatians 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. (KJV)
*****JOY: Joy is not just happiness. It is something much deeper and much more encouraging and inspiring. We cannot experience happiness when we are in pain . . . whereas we can feel joy even in our darkest moments, for we know deep down within us that no matter what happens, the Lord will never leave us, never forsake us (Heb.13:5) and will never ever lie to us (Tit.1:2),
In today’s dark and violent world, adversity, crime, corruption, difficulty, disorder, hardship, viciousness and so many bad things that can happen to anyone of us at any time. I honestly do not think that a TRUE Christian can ever lose the joy the Holy Spirit produces within us. We may not always be ‘happy’ . . . but NO human can remove our joy! Neither can Satan remove it, no matter how hard he tries, nor how many times he tries!
John 15:11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. (KJV)
Romans 15:13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. (KJV) . . . Keep your faith!
*****PEACE. Peace is another most important quality that we all need in our lives, because there is so much distrust, doubt and uncertainty in today’s world. Wars and rumors of wars are everywhere, and we have no way of knowing what will happen next. The peace that is offered by God is different than what is offered by the world. The world thinks of peace as lack of conflict, wars to end. The Bible’s version is: Peace is not the absence of turmoil, but instead it is the presence of tranquility even in a time of chaos. It is a deep feeling of contentment knowing that God is in control of the events of the day. . . . Are you stressed out by the crashing, roaring waves of turmoil in your life, or do you experience the peace that passes all understanding?
We all must realize that the Holy Spirit has His peace to give to us and that He can give it to us in great abundance . . . 24/7. Once His peace starts flowing into your heart, mind and soul . . . it really is as the Bible says: Philippians 4:6-7 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (KJV)
*****LONGSUFFERING, PATIENCE. Patience is a fruit of the Spirit that we ALL need! I know that I need refreshed quite often. I get impatient in long lines in a grocery store, and I have left many restaurants because of the lines. Our God is a very patient and longsuffering God, and we should be also . . . but His ways are not our ways. Isaiah 55:8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. (KJV) . . . And one of the things we find out quickly is that He works on a much slower time frame than we do. His clock and our clock is different! 2 Peter 3:8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. (KJV)
Unless we learn to adjust to God’s slower way of working things out, we find ourselves losing patience with Him and how He wants to work things out in our life.
God operates on a much longer and slower time frame than we are used to operating in the fast paced world in which we live in.
Some say that we should not pray for the fruit of the Spirit, I strongly disagree. God wants us to talk about ALL our problems so that He can help us. All the fruits of the Spirit can help us tremendously . . . WHY would we not ask God to increase them in our lives? Luke 17:5 And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith. (KJV)
Some say that we must work harder with the Holy Spirit on this particular fruit to get it properly worked up into our character. Again I disagree! ALL the fruits are God’s divine character . . . ALL of them are similar in their production. We ALL need ALL the fruits.
*****Kindness. Kindness will goes hand in hand with love and compassion. It is the same Holy Spirit that transmits His love to you, and the fruit of kindness will follow right behind it. It is much easier for us to be able to be kind to others once the love of God flows abundantly into your personality. The result of love brings on kindness, with people being less impatient and with people being in a less hurry. In today’s rude world, many people have totally lost the ability to treat others with love, kindness and respect. A kind word, a kind deed to another person can really do wonders for them and it certainly will not hurt us!
When you really study the life of Jesus in the New Testament, you can really tell how kind He always was with other people in His dealings with them. Dear one, Jesus is no doubt, the ultimate role model for all of us who are walking in the Spirit.
*****Goodness. The fruit of goodness is another really powerful Godly quality that works through us. Not only does the goodness of God draw people directly to Him, but it also draws people to God through the believer of these fruits of the Spirit, operating through them are like a magnet.
Jesus tells us that we are to be His light and let that light shine before men and not attempt to hide it. Matthew 5:14-16 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. (KJV)
Part of Jesus’ light are the nine fruits of His Spirit (Rom.8:9). Unbelievers are pulled toward someone who has some degree of these nine fruits revealed through their character. Many Christians can effectively witness to others by just living right and being a good example and role model for others to follow. Unbelievers do watch how Christians live, because they know there is something different about them.
*****FAITHFULNESS. In the hectic and sin-sick world in which we live, half of all marriages end up in divorce, and millions of others simply live together without the benefit of marriage. More and more supposed ‘Christians’ are agreeing with the world that abortion is OK, and that more and more people are in agreement with homosexuality and same sex marriage. This is NOT being faithful to God and His Holy Word!
The fruit of faithfulness is not only needed in our own personal relationship with God, but it is also needed in our own personal relationships with our friends and our families. Once you are saved and have a TRUE personal relationship with the Lord . . . one of the first things you must do is to grab the Lord and stay faithful to Him and His Word for the rest of your life. One big problem with the Jewish people back in the Old Testament is that they simply could not, or would not, stay faithful to the Lord! Once you make a sincere, heart-felt commitment to the Lord by faith (Rom.5:1-2), you are saved and have entered into a true personal relationship with the Lord. You must NOT turn away from Him ever! Israel could not stay faithful and loyal to God on a consistent and regular basis. They would forget God, and go off into sin time and time again! There were times that God the Father would literally calling them harlots and adulterers because they would not stay faithful to Him, especially when they kept chasing after other gods.
This is true of so many professing ‘Christians’ today! They KNOW what the Bible states! Yet they do the sin any way! Dear one, God the Father really holds the fruit of faithfulness in high regard. He wants you to be faithful and loyal to Him and to your spouse, your children, your parents, your good friends . . . to EVERYONE!!!
*****Gentleness. Gentleness is a fruit that many men seem to draw back from. Jesus was fully Man and fully God. Since Jesus walked this Earth as a Man, the Son of Man, a study of His actions and words should be very carefully considered when you read the Gospels and how He handled different types of people.
Yes! There were times that He would get involved with some nasty people, and He would have to set them straight, like He did with some of the Scribes and Pharisees (Mat.23). But other times He dealt with people in a very gentle way, with kindness and love. Jesus’ gentle way of handling people is what really see Him as He really was!
Dear one, Jesus is the Perfect Role Model for ALL of us . . . men and women, to study and learn from Him!
Self-Control. Last, but not certainly least, is the fruit of self-control. Once we enter into a true sanctification process with the Lord, He starts immediately producing His fruits within believers! Sanctification process: (Rom.15:16; 1 Cor.6:11; 2 Thes.2:13; 1 Pet.1:2; 2 Cor.6:14-18; 7:1; Gal5:16; Eph.5:18, 26; 2 Tim.2:19-21; Heb.12:14; 1 Pet.1:15-16; 3:15).
We ALL have character flaws working in our personalities. There are some really bad and negative qualities must go (Eph.2:1-3). See faithfulness.
The Bible clearly tells us that our spirits and our flesh will war against each other in this life. Spiritual warfare: (Jn.15:18-19; 2 Cor.10:3-4; Gal.5:16-17; Eph.6:10-18; 1 Tim.6:12).
Our flesh (old nature) wants instant self-gratification at any cost and will stop at nothing to try and get it. If the apostle Paul had trouble fighting this . . . we will too! (Rom.7:14-25). We know deep down that some of our fleshly desires are NOT right for us, NOT good for us! As a result, there will be a tug of war between the two. This is where self-control steps in to help all those who are endowed with the Holy Spirit (Jn.14:16; 15:26; 16:13-14; Rom.8:9; 1 Cor.2:10-13; Eph.1:17; 1 Jn.2:20,27; 4:4,13,16).
We all live in an extremely self-seeking (me-me), and greedy, money-oriented world today. Many people (including some Christians) have a very poor yearning and lust control. If they see something they want, they will do anything they can to try and get it. These people are clearly very weak in the fruit of self-control. The Bible gives us a great answer! Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. (KJV)
Because of our fallen and sinful natures, we all are weak to some degree in the fruit of self-control . . . so the Lord made sure we have available to us this marvelous fruit of His Holy Spirit. We all need God’s self-control operating in our lives if we are to have any hope in getting cleaned up and properly blessed to the degree that He would like to get us to in this life.
Let us never forget that ALL the fruits of the Spirit are available to ALL God’s TRUE children ALL the time!
