HOW can we wait on God?

It seems to me that waiting on God was one of David's secrets of being a man after God's own heart (1 Sam.13:14; Acts 13:22). David went in and sat before the Lord (2 Sam. 7:18). God was David’s Assurance, and he trusted Him in EVERY aspect of his life: for guidance and instruction (Ps. 25:5), for help and defense (Ps. 33:20), for victory over his enemies and vindication (Ps. 37:7,9,34; 52:9), for deliverance from trouble and destruction (Ps. 40:1, 59:9), for His refuge from treachery and oppression (Ps. 62:1,5), for His forgiving love (Ps. 130:5-6), and SO much more.

There is nothing that tries our faith more than waiting on God for answers to prayer. Waiting on the Lord tests our submission to Him as our Trustworthy Authority. Waiting is not simply to resign from all our activity . . . to me it is submission to God . . . because we know that He has a  better idea. Waiting on God means that ALL of our life is brought under God's canopy of authority, direction and protection. It is sad indeed when we think we know better than the Lord, and we run ahead of Him for that will only bring painful chastening by chaos, exhaustion and utter failure. Taking matters in our own hands has many edifying examples in God's Word. Think of Abraham wanting a son (Gen.16), Saul's usurping the role of a priest 1 Sam.13), Israel looking to Egypt for help (Isa. 30:1-3), or walking in the light of our own fire (Isa. 50:11.)

What do we learn while we are waiting? We learn of God Himself, for God reveals His perfections to us. He reveals His flawless ability to be in charge of EVERY detail . . . His timing is split-second. He is omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent and omni-caring! Omni = always, ever! He works all and in all. He reveals His ever-presence within us! He confirms His goodness and His love for us! He assures us of His REAL power over the enemy that is not seen. His Holy Spirit centers on us! Even though His power cannot be seen, we can FEEL it!

So many people insist on proof! Luke 11:29 And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. (KJV)

God’s TRUE children must believe God in FAITH! Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (KJV)
Hebrews 11:6  But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (KJV)
The Holy Spirit gives the grace to wait on His purposes until the precise moment when He gives evidence that He was working all along. Without faith, it is impossible to please Him, for all who come to God must believe that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him. We must humble ourselves and open our hearts and minds as we wait on God!

How Should We Wait?
Prayerfully. Psalm 25:4-5 Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths. 5  Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day. (KJV)

With strength and courage.  Psalm 27:14 Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD. (KJV)
Psalm 31:24 Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD. (KJV)

Rejoicing and trusting in His Holy Name. Psalm 33:21 For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name. (KJV)

Based on the fear of the Lord and His unfailing love. Psalm 33:18 Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy; (KJV)
Psalm 33:22 Let thy mercy, O LORD, be upon us, according as we hope in thee. (KJV)

With hope. Psalm 33:20 Our soul waiteth for the LORD: he is our help and our shield. (KJV)
Psalm 39:7 And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee. (KJV)

Patiently. Psalm 37:7 Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. (KJV)
Psalm 40:1 I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. (KJV)
Habakkuk 3:16 When I heard, my belly trembled; my lips quivered at the voice: rottenness entered into my bones, and I trembled in myself, that I might rest in the day of trouble: when he cometh up unto the people, he will invade them with his troops. (KJV)
Romans 8:25 But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. (KJV)
Hebrews 6:15 And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise. (KJV)
Obediently. Psalm 37:34 Wait on the LORD, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the land: when the wicked are cut off, thou shalt see it. (KJV)
Psalm 119:166 LORD, I have hoped for thy salvation, and done thy commandments. (KJV)
Isaiah 26:8-9 Yea, in the way of thy judgments, O LORD, have we waited for thee; the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the remembrance of thee. 9  With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness. (KJV)

Desiring Him. (KJV)

Single-mindedly. Psalm 62:5 My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him. (KJV)

Expectantly.  Psalm 132:2 How he sware unto the LORD, and vowed unto the mighty God of Jacob; (KJV)
Micah 7:7 Therefore I will look unto the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me. (KJV)

Believing His Word. Psalm 130:5 I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope. (KJV)

Assured He is all we need, He is our portion. Lamentations 3:24 The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him. (KJV)

Quietly. Lamentations 3:26 It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD. (KJV)

Always.  Hosea 12:6 Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment, and wait on thy God continually. (KJV)

In anticipation of joy. John 3:29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled. (KJV)

Eagerly. Romans 8:19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. (KJV)
Romans 8:23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. (KJV)
