“Turn from Sin” to Be Saved?
Does a person have to stop living in sin to be saved? WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?
Romans 4:3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. (KJV) . . . Ceasing from sin, living a holy life, is NOT a requirement for salvation . . . because THAT is simply impossible!
Judas “repented” for betraying Jesus, and even tried to make amends by returning the money. Judas was sorry . . . that he got caught, and most likely he would NEVER have committed that same sin again . . . but forsaking the sin, and trying to make amends are NOT Biblical repentance. Many preachers teach the damnable heresy of Lordship Salvation, which is NO salvation at all. You CANNOT . . . NO WAY . . . get saved by cleaning up your act, turning over a new leaf or by amending your ways.
Salvation is COMPLETELY of the Lord. Our part is to BELIEVE God, in FAITH; God does ALL the saving!
There is much confusion and misunderstanding over repentance. On one side of the street we have the Lordship Salvation bunch, and on another side we have those who want to label every preacher who dares mention the phrase “turn from sin” as a heretic.
Many TRUE believers have differences regarding doctrinal issues, but when it comes to disagreement over the doctrine of salvation, which the very heart and foundation of Christianity, the FALSE must be exposed and the TRUTH firmly established in the hearts of believers. If we are wrong on repentance, then we are wrong on everything else too. There is a great battle between Lordship Salvation and Free Grace.
John MacArthur is WRONG on repentance:
“Eternal security is a great spiritual truth, but it should never be presented merely as a matter of being once saved, always saved—with no regard for what you believe or do. The writer of Hebrews 12:14 states frankly that only those who continue living holy lives will enter the Lord's presence."
This is NOT Biblical! MacArthur teaches a works salvation. Hebrews 12:14 doesn't mean that at all. Very interesting, MacArthur's recent “Revised and Updated” The MacArthur Study Bible CORRECTLY interprets this Scripture. MacArthur contradicts himself often, which certainly doesn't sit well with being a “world-class scholar.”
So, from what must a person repent in order to be saved? He must repent of that which makes him lost. And, since "believing not" makes him lost, "believing" makes him saved. Believeth not: (Luke 22:67; John 3:12,18; 5:47; 6:64; 10:25-26; 16:9; 2 Cor.4:4; 2 Thes.2:12; Heb.3:18-19; Jude 1:5).
Repentance is turning from away from the thing that keeps you from being saved . . . TO the thing that saves you . . . BELIEF! So, there must be a repentance from unbelief in order to believe. Repentance is simply a change of direction. It means to turn around and go the other way. You are going away from not believing, and you decide to turn around and believe. You change your direction; you change your mind. With your will you believe and rely on Christ to save you. But, in order to believe, you have to repent of your unbelief. That which makes a person lost must be left behind for good.
We must never forget that eternal life is a free GIFT, paid in full by Jesus' precious Blood (1 Peter 1:18,19). God's Holy Word says that we are saved by grace through faith in Christ, and ANY changes that take place are God's department . . . NOT ours!
The damnable Lordship Salvation heresy puts the impossible burden of changing, all on the sinner as a prerequisite to saving faith. That is a FALSE "another gospel" (2 Cor.11:4) based in a person's own self-righteousness. People do NOT have to stop sinning to be saved . . . because it is utterly impossible to do!
To repent literally means to have a change of mind or spirit towards God and toward sin. It means to earnestly turn FROM your sins, with all your heart, and trust Christ Jesus to save you. The change in the sinner's heart, is what God does . . . and you can be certain that He will DO it. The sinner's part is to simply BELIEVE in Him. Anything else that is necessary to eternal salvation, the Lord takes care of when you trust in Him. You either believe the Bible or you don't.
Salvation is the change in a person's heart. Salvation is of your heart . . . NOT of your works. Salvation is of God, NOT man. Our part is simply to believe God . . . but it is God who changes our heart. Any person who truly believes in Christ has repented.
When someone trusts Christ as Saviour, he/she also repents. TRUE Faith and TRUE repentance are the same; they are NOT two separate decisions done at two different times. You cannot have faith without repentance and you cannot have repentance without faith. A person cannot trust Christ as Saviour unless they repent or change their mind . . . about God. The fact that a person sincerely trusts Christ for salvation shows that he/she has changed his/her mind about sin, salvation and God. Repentance cannot be separated from faith. Anyone who turns their heart to Christ has turned their heart away from the love of sin.
You CANNOT have salvation without repentance . . . and the evidence, the proof of salvation is a changed life (2 Cor.5:17, 2 Pet. 3:9). We do NOT make Jesus "Lord," HE IS LORD! Salvation recognizes this FACT and humbly submits to Him as Lord and Master of your life. You are wise to confess Him NOW with the mouth and bow the knee in THIS life, instead of the one to come! (Isa. 45:23; Rom.10:9; 14:11; Phil.2:10-11). You SHALL bow, either now or later . . . that is certain! Repentance is NOT a work, it is a basic and central part of the salvation God grants in His marvelous GIFT to us. Salvation is from God so we can expect sincere and significant change in our mind, heart, direction, motives, life (Acts 11:18; 2 Tim. 2:25, Eph.2:8-10). The PROOF of salvation is a changed life.
