If I am saved and all of my sins are forgiven, why not continue to sin?"
Romans 6:1-2 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? (KJV) . . . The idea that a person can “trust in Jesus Christ” for salvation and then, just go on living just as he/she lived before, is in TOTAL opposition to the Bible. TRUE Believers in Christ are "new creations" (2 Cor.5:17). God the Holy Spirit changes us from within, stopping the production of the flesh (Gal.5:19-21) to the production of the fruit of the Spirit (Gal.5:22-23). The TRUE Christian life is a changed life because the Christian is changed.
What makes Christianity different from every other religion is that Christianity is based on what God has done for us through Jesus Christ . . . God's Divine accomplishment and work, NOT ours. Every other worldly religion is based on what they must do to earn God's favor and forgiveness . . . boiling down to human accomplishment and work. Every other religion teaches that they must DO certain things and STOP doing certain other things in order to earn God's love and mercy. Christianity is simply faith in Christ, and teaches that we do certain things and stop doing certain other things because of what Christ has already done for us. TRUE Christians do NOT have to earn or work for God's love or His mercy or salvation.
When someone has been delivered from sin's penalty . . . an agonizing eternity in Hell, we CANNOT go back to living the same fleshly, immoral, wicked life that had us on the path to Hell to start with. Christ has delivered us and cleansed us from the defilement of sin, WHY would we WANT to go back to the same cesspool of depravity that leads to Hell? A TRUE Christian, knowing what Christ Jesus did on our behalf, CANNOT go back to living as if Jesus were not important to us. When we realize just how much Jesus suffered for our sins . . . IF we were to continue sinning, it would mean those sufferings were meaningless to us. We CANNOT do that. That would be sheer blasphemy!
To be TRULY converted . . . continuing to live in sin is NOT an option for us. WHY? Because our conversion resulted in a completely new nature, we are made new from the inside, and we no longer have the desire to live in sin. Yes, absolutely, we will still sin, but instead of wallowing in it . . . like a pig in mire, as we once did, we now hate it and want to be delivered from it. The idea of "a license to sin" . . . or “taking advantage” of Christ’s Sacrifice on our behalf by continuing to live sinfully is UNTHINKABLE to a TRUE Christian. If a person thinks he/she is a Christian and STILL desires to live the old, sinful life, there is great doubt about his/her salvation.
2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? (KJV) . . . A TRUE Christian realizes that Christ Jesus is in us. Do YOU pass the test?
